It's the End of the World as We Know It.
« on: April 01, 2011, 12:02:59 AM »
I've finally found a good name for my ongoing story, It might change as I get closer to the end, but owell. I'm open to suggestions.
I've currently have three chapters typed up and I'm working on a fourth one. I'll update this story in small chunks of each chapter, just to keep things interesting. XP
Be advised there is some light cursing, especially near the end of the third chapter; I'll try to edit it out before posting it.
There might be some small grammer errors, I apologive ahead of time for those Grammer Nazis.  :)

Anyway, On to the story:

Chapter 1 "Where the Hell is Everybody?!"

0450 hours, an alarm goes off with a rasping, almost mechanical, repetitive BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!, only to be terminated by the faintest of clicks from the owner's snooze button. Ten minutes later, the alarm goes off again, almost in vain, and its owner grumbled and muttered a few curses about, "that damn alarm clock". The owner sat up, pressed the "off" button on his alarm clock, and sat with his hind legs hanging off the side of the bed.

He rubbed his eyes, slid his glasses onto his muzzle, and clearly stated, "Lights on - Dim." The combination ceiling fan and light glowed to the preprogrammed point were colors would only just start to be seen, just the way he liked it.

At that point the human-like Siberian Husky stood up and scratched his head. Clad in only his shirt and underwear, he grabbed his strategically placed clothes and headed across the hallway adjoining his room to the bathroom.

After the Husky adjusted the computerized temperature controls to ninety degrees and pressing "Shower" on the control screen, the shower hissed to life. As the water warmed, he took out a small pair of scissors and trimmed the fur on his face to his liking.

Once the shower was warm, he stepped in, quickly became aware of his surroundings, and took a shower in nearly record time, forty-five seconds. Muttering to himself, he growled because it was worse then yesterday's time of thirty-eight seconds. Quickly, he dried off, slipped on a simple t-shirt and jeans, and headed downstairs to check his e-mail. Seeing that the internet had nothing new to offer, he quickly whispered goodbye to his mother, who responded with a slurred and sleepy, "Have a good day." By 0545 hours, he's in his truck, which is almost too small for him, and drove off to school.

While backing into his parking space outside the NJROTC building, one of the Husky's friends pulls up alongside him.

"Good Morning, Grey," says the stout turtle, "are you ready to catch a truckload of crap from First Sergeant today?"

Offering a quick glance to the five foot nine turtle, Grey queries, "For what am I condemned, Corgan?"

"You know full well what I'm talking about, and stop using big words such as 'condemned' around me. It hurts my head."

Grey grinned. True, he knew exactly why he was catching so much admonition from First Sergeant lately. From arguing about the difference between Federation Army and Federation Aerospace drill to not showing up to the grueling two and a half hour practices after school, Jacob Grey was simply getting on First Sergeants' nerves.

Jacob walked through the front door of the JROTC headquarters at Fleming Peninsula High School, offering the customary, "Good Morning First Sergeant!" in an obviously faked enthusiastic voice.

Almost immediately, the large, muscular bulldog replied, "Grey!" with both aggression and annoyance in his voice.

"Yes, First Sergeant?" Grey replied, ears lowering and tail sagging to the ground.

"Where have you been each afternoon?" says First Sergeant, a growl emanating from his muzzle.

I told this idiot why yesterday, Grey thought and replied rather annoyed, "I told you yesterday and the day before, First Sergeant, I have homework and the reason I have so much homework is because I'm in the AICE program."

"Then why can't you be here on Fridays?"

"I have work cleaning house for my neighbors."

At a loss of what to ask, the flustered bulldog dismissed Grey, seeking out another cadet to pick on.

After stowing his unneeded books and binders in his locker at HQ, the Husky hefts his backpack onto his shoulders and feigns a sleepy look. Stepping out of HQ, all the look did was deter his superiors from bothering him while he was working; his subordinates usually found out the hard way. One morning, with a severe lack of sleep, Grey went off on a poor Calico cat, and on that feline's first day too! Now, Jacob only offers sleepy morning greeting to any cadet who passes by while he is on his way to his job in the unit. Every morning, at around ten after six, he "teaches" all of the second and third year cadets, although all he does is put a question by test on the multipurpose board at the front of the class and allow them to answer using special remotes.

Reaching his classroom, the Husky is greeted by an almost overly cheerful, flying squirrel, Jamin Gallows. No one really knew why his fur was red. Apparently having red, "ginger" fur was a recessive gene and both of his parents were gingers. So, like playing Russian roulette with a loaded revolver, he was stuck with red fur.

"Good morning Grey!" the flying squirrel said excitedly, obviously due to the pot of coffee brewed every morning.

"Well, I have quizzes from the lessons Captain has been teaching, and later I have TIM 2.0 to sort of loosen up the cadets before school starts."

"Good choices Jamin, I still have some homework to finish, so just run those and I'll ensure everyone keeps quiet."
"Aye Chief." Replied Gallows with a formal air about him, tail still twitching from the coffee. The squirrel promptly executed an about face, and walks over to the computer terminal situated at the rear of the classroom.

Shaking his head while he walked to an empty desk, Grey mused to himself, "No wonder we're called ROTC Nazis. We march, we salute, and anyone who cares abides by regulations like the word of God."

After a straight half an hour of yelling at a group of vulpines to shut up, Grey still had no homework done. Growling to himself, ears lowered and fur prickling up on the nape of his neck, Grey packs up and leaves as Gallows finishes briefing the other cadets on upcoming unit events.

As he walked across the campus out to the cafeteria situated in the middle of the campus, Jacob regretted not bringing a jacket; the weather in Virginia gets awfully cold during these months, even for a Husky like himself. When he walked into the cafeteria, Grey savored the smell of food emanating from the serving lines and the warmth inside the building. Seeing a group of friends, Jacob set his backpack down with a thud next to them and quickly walked to the serving lines. Getting a meat biscuit and a bottle of water, his food account was automatically billed as he walks out of the recessed line, his student ID giving the computer his identification.

Walking back to the abandoned backpack, Jacob contemplated, "Why do I hang out with these people?"

There was John Austin, a mix between a Great Dane and a Chocolate Labrador. Standing at about six foot five with the size of a Great Dane and the appearance of the Lab, his ears are constantly flopped over in some obscure fashion and his glasses were consistently crooked. He probably was the most annoying of the group, displaying his own unique brand of "Nerdiness" in almost every conversation.
Then there was Lauren Octothorpe, or Wren for short. A river otter with dark red fur and glasses, she seemed to have that "smart" air about her and was always the only one to sensibly get through a political discussion with John. She wasn't a pure "ginger" otter like Gallows, her father was an odd, near black color, giving her pelt the black with a slight reddish tinge coloration.

The only other female member was Molly Links. At first glance, she would be the person you'd expect to be on the cheer squad or dance team. But no, she hung out with the AICE kids. She was both enjoyable and useful to have around. She was the "Fashion Guru" of the group, always making outfit recommendations. Wanting to break through the stereotype that lynxes are complete ditzes, she often takes papers to revise them and even type them up.

And the last member of the group, Andrew Lesaew. He was a rather tall weasel with a dark blonde fur coloring. He's considered the smartest of the group, and is often sarcastic in his remarks, often sparking flaming political debates within the group. He is also the only reason Jacob wasn't still ostracized from the AICE culture; ever since freshmen year when they were introduced to each other through an Artic Fox whom moved away the middle of sophomore year, they had been great friends to each other. They did almost everything at school together, from comparing notes to creating "Falsetto Friday" just to bug Molly.

After finally reaching the table, Jacob sat down, took a bite out of his biscuit, and listened in on yet another political debate between John and Wren.

"I'm telling you, the Republic of Asia is going to declare war on the Euro-America Alliance!"

"John, there's no need to shout. It's just an Army buildup; it's not like they intend to destroy an entire continent." retorted Wren, as she kept cool and collected.
"You have to consider the general culture of Asians. They aren't ones to give up easily." Molly chimed in, as she looked up from a recent paper of Andrew's.

"There is also the fact that we and Europe have been steadily increasing our military power for some time. Jacob, what do you think of this? You're our resident military expert." Andrew asked as if Jacob had been there the entire time.

The bell rang, signaling both the official start of the school day and for the group to go to their first of six periods, English. After everyone grabbed his or her book bags and regrouped, Jacob begins to explain his opinion, after first scratching behind his ear.

"Well, a troop buildup can mean many things. They could be preparing for war, but the close relations between each of the countries make that highly unlikely. Their leader is probably wanting to keep up with both us and the Federation of Europe. Military growth is a great way to improve the economy during these rough times. Either way, I don't see a war in the near future."

"I'm just saying, I've got a feeling that something is amiss." John said, somewhat annoyed.

"So John, what do you think of Youth-In-Asia?" Wren asked.

"I think its great. Youth in Asia is moving their nation forward."

"So... you support killing people by an overdose of sleeping drugs?" Wren asked as a wry grin grew on Grey's muzzle.

"Wait... What?!" John asked, voice cracking in confusion.

Laughing, the group walked into its English class, which was taught by a colorful parrot who had just returned from a missionary trip to the Federation of Africa.

After a full period of tangents, and segues to other tangents, the bell rang, and the group rushed to be the first out the door, which ended with Jacob Grey as the victor.

With his tail wagging and with a smug grin on his face, Jacob waited for his friends on the other side of the hallway. "Yet again, the weak peril under the strong." Grey called to his friends, with a forced masculine tone.

"Although brain often triumphs over brawn." Andrew retorted, as though he got some weird joy out of the exchange.

"If you guys would just be ready when the bell rings, that would be the case; however..."

"However, Huskies as a breed are stronger." John interjected, mocking Jacob,
"We know, we go over this every morning."

"I don't even know why you guys keep discussing this." Molly said with a hint of disgust. "Did any of you get number thirty-five?"

"Yes, I do believe that it was 'Alas, poor Yorick' " John said with the ever-prevalent tone of arrogance.

"What do you mean? That was definitely not the line closest to the play within a play." Jacob said, picking up a British accent midway through his sentences.

Joining Jacob with the accent as well, Wren continued, "It was obviously 'C', 'The play's the thing, that will grab the attention of the king.', or something like that. So are you ready for the math quiz today?"

Simultaneously replying in falsetto, Jacob and Andrew half-shout "Yeah!" while jumping into the air.

Walking into their math class, AICE Math and Mechanics, they were greeted by a somewhat portly yet enthusiastic badger named Mr. Delman. Most students thought that Mr. Delman was possibly the devil of the teachers at the school, yet his AICE M&M class actually liked him. No one could figure out why. It could just be the fact that the class shared the same enthusiasm for advanced math.

Fifty minutes and one surprisingly difficult quiz later, the bell rang and once again Grey raced out of the trailer-like classroom. Standing on the ramp leading up to the door of the classroom, Jacob noticed that no one else had stirred in the classroom, and he also noticed the lack of any other students roaming around in the hallways. Hearing the roar of an entire flight of A-Wings, sixteen fighters, overhead, a rarity in this part of Virginia, he rushed back inside the classroom with a growing look of concern on his face. Bursting in the classroom, he noticed the entire class huddled around the small television in the corner of the room. Abruptly stopping, Jacob cautiously said, "What the hell is going on?"

"See for yourself," John said stepping away from the TV with an unusually melancholy and dazed look on his visage.

Slowly walking up to the TV, Jacob saw what everyone was so somber about, and muttered a single word.

"Da**."

Here's chapter 2. The story can be downladed at my FA (see sig) in .doc format. Should you need it in another format, shoot me a PM and I'll convert it for you. Feel Free to comment, I'll post the 3rd chapter next week.

Chapter 2 "I Told You so."

0430 hours, September 12, 3001. Unable to fall asleep, Grey lies face up on his bed and contemplates yesterday's events. Drifting off into a very light sleep, Grey starts to relive the day before...
Jacob rushed into the classroom, looked at the television, and growled a curse to himself. Rapidly spinning around, Grey snatched up his book bag and sprinted across campus to the JROTC building; surely someone there would enlighten him.
As he looked inside First Sergeant's classroom, he noticed that it looked like nothing had happened. Taking a few breaths to stop panting and to regain his composure, Jacob walked into the classroom.
"Well... Hello Chief Grey," the continuously twitching squirrel greeted Jacob, rather surprised at the unannounced visit.
"Hey Gallows." Grey replied, "Do you know where First Sergeant is or even Captain?" Grey struggled with no avail to keep the look of confusion and concern from becoming noticeable.
"They both just left for some staff meeting, and they told me to send any cadet back to their classroom."
"Don't worry; I just needed to ask them something. Oh, and stop drinking a cup of coffee before every period, all that caffeine is terrible for you."
"Yes Chief." Gallows replied, with a somber look on his face that asked, "What the hell is going on?"
Grey turned around, and started the lonely, five minute walk back to his Math and Mechanics class. Upon entering the class, he noticed that Mr. Delman was able to wire the TV to the Multipurpose board before leaving, and the entire class sat transfixed to a flustered News-cat trying to read bulletins from the recent disaster. Andrew, the only student who seemed to have control of himself, was sitting in the corner playing Super Yoshi on his portable communicator. While staring at the screen, Jacob sat down. Just as Jacob sat, the anchor was handed a piece of paper.
Speedily regaining her decorum, her ears lowered as she began to read, "This paper just handed to me is the final report approved by both the Federation of America and the Federation of Europe. The former democratic leader of the Republic of Asia has been assassinated. The leading political party, the Youth in Asia, has staged a successful coup in Asia and has established a dictatorship. They have named the known aggressor Kim Jung as their leader and his first act was to obliterate the Federation of Africa with nucular-- sorry-- nuclear and hydrogen weapons. Once again the Federation of Africa is no more; there is expected to be no survivors but a small task force will be sent to search for and aid survivors. The President is expected to give a speech and then a short press conference at 2100 hours Eastern Standard Time. Just remember, you got this news first from... "
The screen abruptly went black and the class spun about in their seats, only to see an exasperated badger clutching the input cord...

BEEP! BEEP! Thud. Grey nearly smashes his alarm clock as he has only had twenty minutes of good sleep. Grey sits up and begins his morning routine. After washing his fur in the shower, Grey stands there, basking in the warmth from the water cascading down him. He tries to feel some fundamental difference now that there is one less continent. Yet, feeling nothing, he steps out of the shower and dries off.
After being sent home immediately after Mr. Delman returned, Jacob had laid down on his bed and tried to forget about the recent news. That caused him to miss the President's speech last night. Even if he would have seen it, he would have seen it again this morning due to an emergency "Chiefs and Above" meeting, the only reason that Grey was getting up this morning.
With no time to check his e-mail, Jacob grabs his books and keys and drives off to school, almost forgetting his shoes in the process.
Walking into a large conference room, Grey notices that there are other teachers milling about, talking to one another. Mr. Delman is among them. Confused, Grey sits in an open chair on the large ovular table, knowing that his questions will eventually be answered. About a minute later, a Federation Aerospace Major walks in and starts a video file of last night's speech.
"My fellow Americans," a tired looking Golden Retriever starts, "In light of recent events, our congress has declared a state of war against the Republic of Asia. Following the advice of my military advisors, I will also initiate the draft. In order to streamline training and reduce time in between being drafted and being combat ready, I will also initiate a new program in high schools across the country. Every school with an active JROTC unit will be required to have all students in their Junior and Senior year join J.R.O.T.C. Whatever branch the JROTC falls under will be the branch that the cadet is drafted into after high school. There will be a few exceptions to this to balance out the amount of cadets going into each of the armed forces.”
“During these dark times it is important to remember that what Jung has done to Africa is morally skewed and will not be tolerated. We and Europe will stand united against the threat posed by Kim Jung and the Youth in Asia to ensure that something like what has happened today will never happen again. Thank you for listening, and good night America."
Turning off the video file, the vulpine major opened a PowerPoint file with "top secret" plastered over the first slide. Seeing everyone fidgeting in their seats, the Fennec fox begins to speak.
"Good morning, my name is Major Phoenix. Don't worry, I wouldn't be showing this to you if you did not pass the background check. Let's begin shall we? As you have just heard, there are exceptions to this new program, and your school is one of them. Instead of your students being drafted into the Navy, they will be drafted into the Aerospace Force."
A collective groan rose from the half-asleep group of vulpines and canines as a cruel smile appeared on the major's face.
"You will all get to lead an individual class formed from the influx of students, and you will be appointed 1st Lieutenants when you graduate. You will also be paired with a teacher with a military background. They will supervise and offer advice along the way, but it will be your job to ensure the new cadets are properly trained. Now," the major flipped the slide to show a list of which cadet was paired with which teacher, "this list shows which cadet chief will be paired with which teacher. Each Chief will be entitled to choose his own assistant and organize their class as they see fit. The members of each class, as well as their leaders, are determined by their score on the latest ASVAB. So pair up with your teacher or cadet and we will proceed with the individual briefings. Grey and Delman, you're first."
Grey and Delman met at the exit of the room and Mr. Delman answered Grey's question before he could ask it.
"I can't tell you what I did in the military, not here. But you'll find out soon enough"
They walk into a small office and sit in front the desk where Major Phoenix was shifting through printouts of various students.
"Why do we continue to use paper when everything is logged on the computers? I swear if I was running things…" The major looked up mid-sentence and noticed the badger and husky sitting in chairs with puzzled looks on their faces.
"Oh... sorry about that, I guess this office work has made me a little crazy." The fennec fox put on a pair of reading glasses and looks through the stack of folders.
"Lets see... Ah, here it is, Grey. Alright Grey, do you even know what you scored on the ASVAB yet?"
"I still haven't received my score report from the latest one."
"Okay, well, you scored the highest of anyone on the school -- a 99.95th percentile. So, instead of being assigned a class to train, you will get to select your own class and you will be trained to do almost anything and eventually be sent on missions that only the highest brass will know about. Any questions?"
"Just one: what does Mr. Delman have to do with all of this?"
"All I know is that he has prior military experience in the field you will be training in. Anything else, he will have to tell you. Here's a list of Juniors that you can chose from to form your class. Make sure you pick people you can trust. I'll be back in a few minutes."
Standing up, Major Phoenix hands Jacob the list and rushes out of the office. After taking a quick glance at the list, Jacob is the first one to speak.
"So... I never knew you were in the military."
"You were never supposed to," the aging badger slowly stood up and made his way over to the coffee machine on the other side of the desk continuing on, "I was a part of an elite team back in the end days of the Great Country Wars. 30 years ago, back when there were hundreds of countries, only to be condensed into four continental governments. Well, three, now that Africa has been eradicated. But yes, my team and I were always the ones solving the problems created by bickering politicians. Nobody knew our team existed, except the president himself. We were fully backed by the United States of America with the latest equipment and supplies." The badger sat with a steaming cup of coffee and sighed, "I remember a certain mission just like it was yesterday; it's one I hope happens to no one. We--"
At that moment Major Phoenix walked into the room, causing Mr. Delman to stop mid-sentence.
"Had one too many cups of coffee this morning," the fennec explains, adjusting his uniform in the process, "Have you picked your cadets yet?"
Glancing again at the list, Grey notices that his four friends, followed by Gallows, are at the top of the list, after him of course.
"I'll take the first five cadets after myself on the list for my team."
Grey then handed the clipboard to the major, who looks at the list and sets it down on the desk.
"Alright I'll be sure to get that processed."
The fox reaches into his pocket and hands Jacob Grey a set of O-2 bars, a Lieutenant.
"Gallows will be promoted to Cadet Chief once your team is assembled seeing that he is the only one with prior JROTC experience. Good Luck Lieutenant."
The major gives Grey a crisp hand salute, which Grey promptly returns.

"I told you so!" John yells, disturbing the solemn mood in the Cafeteria.
"Jeez John, that's like the 50th time you said that this morning. I think we get the point." Molly says, trying to get John to shut up.
"Thirty-Six times to be exact," Andrew calmly interjects, "What's going to happen is what we should be worrying about. I know we will be sent to ROTC because we're juniors, but I don't want to go and fight."
"Why not Andrew? You've always been the one to go on anti-Communist and anti-Asian rants. This will be a chance to finally fight these guys." Wren says, prying for a reason.
At that moment, Andrew Lesaew, Wren Octothorpe, John Austin, and Molly Links were called over the intercom to report to the JROTC building.
"I bet this has something to do with Jacob." Wren speculates.
"Let's go already, one excuse I never want to use is that me and my friends were sitting and talking when we were supposed to be somewhere." Molly says.
"My friends and I," Andrew says, correcting Molly's grammar.
A few minutes later the group walks into the classroom to which they were directed. Jacob stood at the front of the room, reading something out of a pure white folder and wearing a brand new Aerospace Uniform with creases sharp enough to cut paper in two, two gold bars representing a Lieutenant in Navy JROTC, and enough medals to make someone walk sideways.
Hearing the door close, Grey tells them without looking up, "Sit down and I'll explain everything in a moment."
The group sits down and Grey reads for a few seconds longer then snaps the folder shut in his right paw.
Setting the folder on the desk he was leaning on, Grey begins to explain, "As you must know, every junior and senior must be enrolled in JROTC. Thanks to your ASVAB scores, you're stuck with me. Jamin Gallows, the ginger squirrel sitting behind you, will be my right hand man unless I see fit to replace him.
“Our class is a special case; on paper we are just another class. But in reality, we are training to be a special ops team that takes orders from the highest echelon of the chain of command. Along with me, Mr. Delman will be supervising us and ensuring that our training goes smoothly. We also--"
"What experience does Mr. Delman have?!" John interrupts, prompting several angry glares in his direction.
Jacob continues as if he was never interrupted, "We also will be trained by the best, receive the best equipment, and possibly some top secret equipment. Now if you look behind you, I'll be handing out some papers you will need to read. I'll be needing you to give me the papers that require a signature."
The Jacob standing at the front of the class seemed to become transparent, and with a flicker, disappeared. Everyone spun around in their chairs shocked to see the same Jacob that just disappeared standing behind them, with a stack of folders with "FOR EYES ONLY" stamped on them underneath his arm and an ear-to-ear grin on his white muzzle.
The group took their folders and smiled as John sat there stammering, "But... How... You... There... Folders?"
Jacob then turns and offers John the last folder. John scrutinizes the folder, and then smacks it out of Jacob's paws and onto the floor sending papers everywhere.
A faint growl is heard from Grey's muzzle and Molly smacks John in the back of the head with her folder. John leaves his seat to pick up the papers, and frantically apologizes saying, "I thought you were another hologram!"
To this Grey just grins, shakes his head, and walks over to where the Holo-Grey just was.
"The papers are just basic liability forms so just sign on the dotted line." Grey told them, leaning on the desk.
Handing the signed papers to Grey, Andrew asks, "So what are these other papers exactly?"
"They're just general information on each of us and Mr. Delman provided by the government."
"I knew the government was spying on us!" John shouts, making everyone jump in their seats.
"I've already looked over Mr. Delman's profile, you won't find much, and most of his service history has been blacked out." Andrew says, getting annoyed at John's outbursts.
"At this point all I can tell you is that he is ex-special forces and he was assigned to train us, so all I know is that we will end up in Special Forces." Jacob tells everyone, standing up straight.
"We could be the ones to determine the outcome of the war."

Moscow, Asia; 2300 hours local; Sept. 11, 3001

“You were NOT supposed to OBLITERATE an entire continent!” a garbled voice came through on the centuries old radio.
“I’m sorry sir, but that was Jung’s decision, I told you that that weasel would do something like that.” a small Russian Blue cat wearing multiple layers of clothes replied.
“If you let ANYTHING like that happen again Yaakov, I’ll see to it that you are permanently removed from your position and shoved into the proletariat.”
   “Proletariat?”
“The lowest class in existence you dumbass.”
“Right, so do you want me to remove Jung?”
“No, that buffoon of a mammal actually helped me.”
   “How’d he do that?”
“He wasted all of his nukes on Africa, and that continent was just an inconvenience in my plan.”
“So… you want me to keep Jung?”
“For now. Now get your feline ass moving before I remove you.”
The radio faded to static as the cat frowned and walked out of the dark ruin of an office into the dimly lit streets.

Fleming Peninsula, Virginia 0830 hours Local

“Ow!” John yelps, trying hard not to fidget off of his precarious position atop the small stepstool inside the JROTC supply room. “Quit stabbing me with those pins!”
“I would if you would stop squirming,” Gallows says calmly through a mouthful of sewing pins. “Now hold still, I’m almost done.”
Jamin bent down to affix the last pin to John’s trousers while Grey stood nearby still in uniform, leaning on a counter. No one had seen Mr. Delman since this morning and Grey was starting to wonder.
At that moment the portly badger appeared in the small window build into the door and motioned for Grey to come outside.
“Where’ve you been? I was starting to think you vanished off the face of the earth.” Grey says closing the door behind him.
“I’ve been arranging this,” Mr. Delman hands Jacob a thick manila folder which Grey immediately begins to read. “It’s a rather controversial training style, but I think this will be good for the team.”
With a devilish grin growing on both his and Jacob’s face, Jacob Grey closes the folder and looks at Mr. Delman.
   “Let’s do it.”

Dang, already posting chapter 3. How do you like the story so far? I based the Characters off of my friends, changed the names, and tweaked a few things about thier characters to make them fit. I've been procrastinating on Chapter 4, but I WILL get it done by next Sunday. If you got any ideas, go ahead and PM me and share them, I might even try to include your fursona in the story   ;). Again, all of the chapters are on my FurAffinity for download (.doc format) as well as a sketch or two of the characters. Anyway, here's chapter 3:

Chapter 3 "And so it Begins..."

Fleming Peninsula, Virginia, 0132 Local

John tosses and turns and eventually lies on his back and sits up, rubbing his forehead. He gets out of bed, clad in red footie pajamas, and goes into the kitchen for a cold glass of milk. After pouring himself a large glass, he takes a sip and sighs with satisfaction. He closes the door and reveals a dark figure, void of any distinguishing feature.
“What the…?!” John exclaims, dropping his glass, spilling the contents on the crotch of his pajamas.
“Hello John,” the figure says through a wry grin, taking a pistol from behind him.
John turns to run, but the figure shoots a small dart into John’s rear end, causing John to flop on the ground and curl up into a ball, sucking his thumb.

Somewhere in Siberia, 0800 Local

It was still dark; it’s been dark for months now. Yaakov trudges through the knee-deep snow, moving toward an isolated lab with a large satellite dish atop it. He told Yaakov to come here; Yaakov has no idea why. He didn’t even know the lab was here until a few hours ago.
Closing the thick, refrigerator-like door, Yaakov fumbles in the dark for a light switch.
The light turns on, catching Yaakov groping a pipe on the wall. He turns to face a revolver pointed dead between his eyes. The revolver was held slightly shaking in the hand of a rather sightly Arctic Fox. She bares her teeth, snarling, asking, “Who the hell are you?”
Yaakov had his eyes fixed on the muzzle of the revolver, causing him to look somewhat cross-eyed.
He replies shakily, “I-I’m Yaakov Sinclair; I was sent here on business.”
“Did He send you here?”
“Y-Yes, yes He did.”
The fox lowers the revolver, and the feline allows himself to breathe again. Yaakov looks around the small room. He noticed the absence of any decoration except for two doors, one on each side of the room. There was also a pair of lights above the far door: one red, one green. The fox motions for the feline to follow, leading him into the door with the two lights. They enter an elevator and the fox finally speaks.
“I do believe I should introduce myself; I’m Erin, Erin Yeltsin.” She extends her paw to Yaakov.
“Nice to meet you Erin,” Yaakov takes her paw and gives it a firm shake. “I must ask: what was with the theatrics when I entered? You could have simply locked me in there and left me until I found a way out.”
“I’ve been here for almost a year now, continually locked in due to the snow.  I also believe that to be smart you have to sacrifice a lot of your sanity. So you could say that being locked in here and my advanced education has made me insane. Your entrance was some welcome entertainment through my theatrics.”
The elevator stops and they walk down a hallway lined with doors.
“Do you even know why you’re here?” Erin asks.
“No, all He told me was to get here ASAP.”
“Well, until He tells me otherwise, all I can tell you is that you are a part of something much larger then yourself.”
They arrive at the end of the hallway, and Erin opens the door in front of them, allowing light to flow into the hallway, temporarily blinding Yaakov and Erin.

Bush Army Base, Middle of the Rocky Mountains, 0805 Local

John wakes up on the lower bed of a bunk bed situated in the corner of a small, grey room, still in his soiled footie pajamas. He sits up, hitting his head on the top bunk. Rubbing his head, he notices the decoration, or rather lack thereof, consisting of a simple shelf, a closet, and a clock. He notices a field uniform folded neatly with shined boots and a note atop the shelf.
The note was simple, “Put on the uniform and be in the briefing room by 0830. Any additional instructions are underneath the uniform.”
Seeing it was 0815, John scrambles to put on the uniform then rushes out the door into a hallway. He sees that the briefing room is directly across the hall from his room. John sees this and sighs in disbelief, thinking to himself, “I thought it would be further away, how stupid of me.”
He walks in, and sees Andrew, Wren, Molly, and some German Shepherd girl he didn’t recognize. They were all in nearly identical uniforms to John, the only difference being that everyone’s name tag was sewn above their right breast pocket.
“And that is how to determine the average airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow.” Andrew finishes, punctuating the end by making a dot on a piece of paper filled with diagrams and calculations.
Molly turns around and notices John, saying, “Hey, our bed-wetter is up,” prompting giggles from the rest of the group.
“I did not wet the bed! I merely spilled my milk,” John shouts at her.
“You spilled your milk, so to speak.” Jacob says, appearing at the front of the room.
Everyone groans and sits down in a row of chairs at the front of the room.
“I think most of you have already met our new team member, Victoria Vassal, or Tori for short.” he says as he gestures to the female German Shepherd. “She’ll be the one to teach you the essentials when your training starts.”
“Before you go any further,” Wren chimes in, “I think we all want to know: where are we, and how did we get here?”
“You’re in the western half of Colorado, deep within the Rocky Mountains at Camp Bush; a nearly abandoned Army base.” A wry grin then showed on Jacob’s maw, “As to how you got here, I’ll leave that to you to find out.”
Grey then brings out two bags, stuffed with something. He lifts the first bag and tosses it to Molly who catches it with ease. He then hefts the second bag up onto his shoulder then throws it to John, who is knocked out of his seat by the sheer momentum of the heavy bag. John recovers quickly, laying the bag on his lap.
“Instructions are in the bags, good luck.” Jacob then puts a hand into his pocket and presses a hidden button, sending everyone but himself rocketing skyward in individual pods.

American Aerospace Academy, Colorado Springs, CO, 0830 Local

“Well, there they go.” Mr. Delman says, watching individual GPS blips as they rocket out of Camp Bush.
He then faces Major Phoenix sitting in a chair adjacent to him, “Tell me again: why did you put Victoria Vassal on my team?”
“Orders are orders,” Major Phoenix says with a slight sense of defeat. “I believe it might have been her experience on the accelerated enlistment program. She must have impressed someone.”
“Meh,” Delman grunts, “She’s got the mental capacity of a 10 year old puppy.”
“Again, orders are orders. Fighting isn’t all about brains Captain Delman.”
“I know that.” Delman sighs, “Another thing is, she’s not that bad looking. She’s bound to stir up some of those teenage hormones. Wait, what did you just call me?”
“Congratulations Captain Delman, your position as commander of this unit gives you that rank.”
“Well thanks. Hey look, they’re gathering.”
They both turn to face the screen to watch as the blips converge on one another.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just outside of Camp Bush, A few minutes later.

“What the hell happened?” Wren says, still dazed from the sudden acceleration.
Molly stumbles from out of the brush with Victoria right behind.
“I think Jacob just shot us out into the middle of the woods.” Tori says, rubbing her head.
“So… what do we do now?” Molly says, causing herself and Wren to look to the German Shepherd, expecting answers.
“Don’t look at me! I was only told as much as you were.”
“Jacob said something about instructions, where are those bags?” Andrew says, emerging from behind a tree, seemingly unscathed.
“Molly has one, and John has the other. Where is John?” Wren says, looking around for the Labrador.
The group then heard branches snapping and a dull thud coming from the woods and set off in that direction. They eventually reached John’s egg-shaped pod and watched as a large portion of the bulbous end on the egg blow off and land a few feet away. John then crawled out, barely conscious due to the extreme acceleration when he hit the ground.
“Today has just not been my day,” John mumbles to himself, reaching back into the pod to pull out his bag.
“John!” Wren screams, causing John to jump up and hit his head on the edge of the pod, “Are you alright?”
“I was alright, until you startled me.”
“It doesn’t look like you’re alright,” says Molly, seeing the stiff, cautious movements John makes as well as small patches of his fur matted down with blood.
“He’s just sore from the 20 G’s of acceleration that the seat caused,” says Tori, “The blood is just from the seat’s straps; he’ll be fine as long as he didn’t suffer any permanent spinal cord damage.”
“We should just camp here tonight. That way we can get our bearings and recover from that launch,” Wren says while crouched in the pod pulling out the heavy bag.
“That makes sense. Where are those instructions?” Andrew agrees while pushing John out of the way to help Wren with the bag.
John yelps when he is pushed out of the way, and then carefully sits down on the ground muttering, “Why am I always the one in pain?”
Wren and Andrew finally hoist the bag out of the pod and Andrew quickly opens it and pull out a piece of paper.
“I found the instructions.”
There is a pause while Andre reads the instructions to himself.
“Well,” Victoria says, “What do they say?”
Andrew hands the paper over to Molly, who begins to read aloud:
By now you all should have gathered and are wondering what you need to do. This training is simple: make your way across the Rocky Mountains to the American Aerospace Academy. You will need to survive the one week journey, while being pursued. That’s right, I’ll be following you. At sunset tomorrow evening, I will leave Camp Bush. I will be armed. You are also armed. All I’m telling you is that you have real bullets. Should you shoot me, I’ll join your group and help you out. Should I shoot one of you, you will be separated and taken to the Academy.
Have fun and I’ll see you soon,
   1stLt. Jacob Grey

I've been bogged down lately writing another short story for a contest (This one actually: http://www.thefurryforum.com/forums/index.php?topic=15740.0), schoolwork (HUGE exams in May  x_x), and general tomfoolery with my RL Friends  :P. Anyway, I have about 1/2 of chapter 4 written and once I can I'll type it up and post it here. Just thought I'd give you guys and update. Oh, Thank you Alexei!
