Title: Your computer
Post by: Kyriin on May 10, 2011, 08:20:51 AM
It makes me a little sad that this board has cobwebs all over it, so I thought I'd make a thread. This is somewhat similar to one Timmy had started, but this isn't limiting to just computer specs. Tell us anything you want about your computer! It may have a history, have gone through a lot in the time you've used it, be a total beast of a computer that you want to brag about or maybe a terrible computer (like my desky!) and wanna say just how much you hate it.

I'll start. You don't have to write as much as me, you can even write more.

I have two computers, a desktop that's been around for at least 5 years and a MacBook I got August last year from school. My desktop used to belong to my grandpa. I currently run Windows 7 and XP on it (dual booted) and it has been formatted probably about 489674 times. Some basic specs: It has ~1gb of ram (I ran 64 bit Windows 7 on it too last year, pshfft) with an Intel Pentium processor with 2x 2.8GHz cores. I have an nVidia GeForce 7100 GS and that's about it. I also named it 'Desky' x3 - it is also in need of upgradez. And has also ran Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04. Before this computer I had one which you had to hit the top for it to turn on; the power button didn't work - you literally had to give it a good hit and it would start up xD

My MacBook has been through a LOT compared to everybody else's at school. It's also ran Ubuntu 10.10, runs OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7 dual booted with Windows 7. Dual booting and using is against school rules, but the joke's on IT support if they haven't figured out everything I've actually done on that thing that breaks their rules yet (they tend to threaten/bluff a heap). I've also hit the keyboard a few times in rage which has caused hard drive shock (I assume), locking the computer up but thankfully was easily fixed by a restart. One of those rage times was caused by The Sims 3 >.>.. It has ~2gb of ram with a dual core processor with both cores being 2.2GHz. It has an nVidia 9100? I think. I'm not sure, but it's 100x better than my desktop's. I'm currently waiting on a DVI -> VGA cable for it so I can plug it into my monitor, then plug in my mouse+keyboard and use it like a desktop.

And I guess I expected to write less but yeah- go for it. Tell everyone about your computer, or computers if you have more than one.

I find visuals to help tell my story better!

Here are some pics to precede the tale of my laptop.

It's currently doing a virus scan so the CPU usage is high =\

So there's some stats. My laptop comes features with a Touchpad mouse pad, a full sized keyboard with numberpad, web cam and microphone, DVD Drivey thingy, can burn CD's and DVD's, and I gots a light up external mouse for it!  B)

I got this thing a year ago and have had absolutely no problems with it, if you don't count the one time the battery wouldn't charge. That was fixed by taking it out and blowing on stuff a bit, then putting it back in. Never got a virus before surprisingly. Not that I know of anyways  x_x

Some of the finer times this thing had was when me and dad would take it out to the lake and watch movies at night  :D It would smell like campfire for days afterwards! And the screen got all bug juicey  XP

I play some older games on it like Starcraft, Quake 3 Arena, OpenTransport Tycoon Deluxe, LegoRockRaiders, and such and such.

I've booted it up in Ubuntu from a Live CD a few times, but I'm afraid to actually install it .

So..... I guess that's it? Oh.... the warranty expires this month...

I love the colour of your windows, Lizard :o

I took some screenshots and a photo too.

Desktop without a wallpaper cause I'm too lazy to find one: http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/jaspertf/desky.png
My whole desk, with a new computer chair that isn't in the picture: http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/jaspertf/DSCF1464.jpg
Laptop, a bit squishy with all the windows because of the screen res: http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/jaspertf/lappy.png

I'm a little ashamed of my desky..
I also have to take my laptop to IT support at my school to get the vinyl on the bottom replaced, it's coming off.

Well...
My first own computer was a desktop I got 6 or 7 years ago. It had only 512mb of DDR1 RAM, a 3GHz CPU with only 1 core and a 256mb GPU...
About 4 years ago I switched it for something more modern with a 2.2GHz Triple core AMD Phenom CPU and 4GB of DDR2 RAM which I loved quite much. The same year I got my laptop (mentioned at the bottom of the post)
Then last year I felt it was time for an upgrade, so I saved up my money and made a list of the components I needed and when I had enough money, I bought the components and built myself my first own homemade rig (Desktop #1). However, I got it to have at my mothers place, and since I do switch between mom and dad every other week since their divorced, I felt I needed something better than my rather shitty performing laptop as main PC at dads place. So for my birthday last year, dad paid the components for a desktop at his place (Desktop #2).
And that is about where I am now. I am happy with what I have currently and I hope it'll last several years before it needs any major upgrade!

Awesome! I like your server setup.

Main server its a custom built rig with an amd phenom quad core @ 2,6Ghz and 12gb memory.
It has one 80gb scsi 14krpm disk for the OS, and 13TB of sata disks for storage.

Second server is an old hp3 that i dont really use anymore. At the top a Zyxel zywall 1050 security gateway and fibre optic switch.
Also have an old xserve 1U server that i use for backing up important data from the main server (sql database, photographs etc).

yea, i do, too.

Extreme multi-tasking is what I do alot of, which is why I usually end up using it all. Plus, having 1.2 TB of games kinda needs room. On my busiest days, I have 3 messengers running, Skype, Livestream, Photoshop, Steam, C++, CS: Source and running 3 CS:S servers off my comp.

I would only need about 2-3gb seeing I don't really run that much (mainly because I can't xD)
But I still wouldn't complain if I had 24gb in my computer xD
I'm embarrassed about my desktop now. Haha.

Right now I have an Inspiron 1501 laptop that sucks pretty badly. It has Vista on it with only around 500MB of RAM. Vista needs 2GB for optimal performance... So my computer still lags with everything on its lowest settings. What's more, my Wireless Card does not work with any other Operating Systems other than Vista, so I can't use Ubuntu or anything else. I need a new laptop or PC, but unfortunately I have no money for that. 'Tis frustrating.  :/

Post by: Kyriin on May 27, 2011, 01:47:17 AM
That would be frustrating. :/ Computers insufficiently built to minimum requirements ftl.
I lol when I see computers at stores with like 2gb of ram and it says they run a 64 bit operating system.

I was in the task manager of my school's desktops the other week and there was like 700mb of ram being used, and on the graph thing there was like one bar out of about 10 there lit up o.o; With constant 1% CPU usage - didn't know the school computers were THAT good ._.

Actually, running 64-bit on a 2GB computer might not gain any real performance gain against the 32-bit.. but that doesn't mean that it will run worse than the 32-bit would.. besides, RAM is hella cheap nowdays, so if you'd be running on 32-bit and decide to put in another 2GB of RAM, it's possible that only 3GB of that can actually be used, running 64-bit at the start is therefore considered more future-proof.

I wouldn't put 64-bit on anything below 2GB however...

Also, new phone, I guess I'll post a snap of the About page. My dad got it for me as a late birthday gift. "Desk chair is boring, here, have this iPhone!" He packed it in a stand-heater box, inside a printer box filled with bricks. I was like "Damn, I was happy about the printer!" when I saw the heater box. Then I opened the heater box and I was like O.O; xD Anyway:

I managed to get a free computer the other day. It's nothing at all to be proud of, but hey, it was free and it works. I think. It seems to. I haven't got around to using it yet because the person who gave it to me had to take the hard drive with them to get stuff off it seeing nothing wanted to copy onto my external. The small one on the left is about 13 years old, I suspect the motherboard is dead. Got a hold of it the other day as well, took the hard drive out and plugged it into my other desky to see what was on it. It was like a time capsule. :'D Booted it up, was amazing to see Windows 98 x3

Eeeew, Dell. I work in IT support and we supply all Dell PCs -.- They're a nightmare. Even their website is crap.

Mmm, love that tasty six core i7 there Lead. One of the new ones, no? If I ever get a desktop it shall be of similar epicness.

I'm betting you probably hold the most power in the desktop department. Luckily for me, I don't really have to compete with you as living with my fiancee's family in the UK, I don't exactly have room for a desktop, leaving me with this...

ASUS ROG G73 Gaming Notebook (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMDN-LdhVTk#ws)

*drooling*

Ahem. That video, although it nearly sufficiently conveys just how awesome my laptop is, doesn't give the stats seeing as there are different models. I have the Asus G73jw model, 1.73GHz i7 processor running up to 2.85GHz on 'twin turbo' mode with 8GB DDR3 RAM and 2x 750GB hard drives. May upgrade to SSD once they come down in price. Maybe.

Doesn't compete with your desktop but, well, it doesn't really need to. I can run Crysis and Crysis 2 on full graphic settings (though disabling that wretched vertical sync) as well as pretty much whatever else I like alongside it, and it still won't hit half power. Plus being a laptop, I can use it in bed, in an office, in a hotel, recently I've been hooking it up to the TV using an HDMI cable for some high def streaming. Only real downsides are the lack of upgradability and it's weight compared to most laptops. The massive 17.3" screen (considering most 'large' laptops are 15" screens, well, yeah) doesn't help with the size either. In fact rather than coming with a carry case, it came with a backpack. lulz. Also came with ROG headset and gaming mouse, never going back to cheap stuff again o.o

It's good to see so many Asus users here, when it comes to it they're the only real players in the market for high quality hardware. Not sure about Alienware, I didn't really get involved in the market until they'd been bought by Dell but now they're rubbish. Just google any of the new models (the M15x is my favourite) and laugh at all the failure.

Just got a new laptop in addition to my macbook and crappy desktop!

So, I don't know the specs right down to the detail, but here they are;

Model: Asus K53TA
Processor: AMD A6-3400M APU Quad Core 4x ~1.4GHz
RAM: 8192MB (~8GB) assuming DDR3
Graphics: ATI Radeon HS 6500M 1GB
OS: 7 Home Premium, too lazy to format and install Ultimate
HDD: 750Gb ... that's all I know
Screen res: 1366x768px

Again, not so detailed, but if you really care that much you can just google the model. :P

Desktop

-Home-built
-8 GB DDR3 RAM @ 1333MHz (I believe)
-Intel Core i7 @ 3.33 GHz
-2x NVidia 9800 GTX+ running in SLI
-MSI P7N-SLI motherboard I THINK (don't quote me on this)
-2x 500GB, 1x 1TB HDs all running @ 7200rpm
-Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit

Can't be bothered with the rest of the details.

The processor and +4 GBs of RAM are the most recent installs.  I built the machine originally about three years ago.  Serves my purposes more than fine, which is mostly photo editing in terms of high-demand stuff.

Laptop

-Lenovo ThinkPad T410
-4 GB DDR4 RAM (don't remember access speed)
-Intel Core i5 @ 2.4 GHz
-Onboard graphics (this is NOT a multimedia machine)
-1x 320 GB HD @ 10,000 rpm
-Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit/Backtrack Linux 5 Dual-boot

I use this computer for most of my work.

Also, I was a primary Linux user for a long time, preferring Fedora and Arch Linux when not penetration testing (hence Backtrack), but it just became impractical for me.  I needed Windows for my photo editing, as I use Adobe Lightroom, which doesn't run stably in Wine, I prefer Microsoft Office to LibreOffice or OpenOffice for normal work, I needed Wolfram Mathematica for my studies, and I wanted to run Skyrim without a compatibility layer.  I may put Arch back on my laptop at some point though, especially since I'm doing so little penetration testing these days that Backtrack is getting pointless.

My computer was custom built in december 2010, it was built by a friend of a friend known to me only as phillip. The computer cost me $1,800 AUD and came with a Geforce 460 GTX 1 GB graphics card, i7 950 processor with 1366p Motherboard, 6GB 2000p RAM, A blu-ray player, CD burner and  Windows 7 64 bit. The cost of those specs is now $1,200.

My computer has been through thick and thin, the C: drive is made up of a 64 GB Solid State Driver, which means it would only have windows on it, and nothing else, everything else would be on my 2 TB HDD. This however, caused significant problems, as everything by default moves on to your C drive, so, obviously I'd change where it was downloaded/installed/moved to, but some things would always manage to slip through because I'm a forgetful person like that.

The main troubles my computer have gone through are me, and Battlefield 3. I don't think any game has given me more trouble. First, for the BETA, I had to install the new Nvidia drivers, on 3 different times, my graphics card drivers would be automatically erased, then the nvidia drivers downloaded, then the nvidia drivers FAILING to install. in which case I'd have a computer with no graphics card software -.- (had to install the old software via Windows Update). Battlefield 3, also, was installed (due to my forgetfulness) on my C: drive. Now, the problem was, Origin is linked with the client software, the cloud and the battlelog website. So in order to move it, you had to configure all those, at the same time. Took me a very long time.

so yeah, that's pretty much a boring story about my computer :D

I have 7 computers total in the house.  5 of those are mine.  :P

I build the new family PC along with my gaming PC (I forget what the specs are).  I also have an Acer Aspire One AOA150/ZG5 and a Macbook Pro.  I use the Acer the most out of any of my portable computers however, but that's because it has Windows as well as Linux on it.  The Macbook Pro can run Windows but getting Linux to run on there is really hard to do (and because of trying I messed up my Windows partition and stuff so I need to re-install it).

The old family PC (it's about 10 or 11 years old now) is running a Minecraft server 24/7.  :P

I also have an old Dell CSx Lattitude which a friend was gonna throw out so I asked if I could has and he said yes.  :3

Generally my rule for Dell and Alienware is to always be extremely careful, they are very capable of overcharging you for one component or another, this is just another example.

Use any of these below if you must have "THE BEST" out there. Also remember that Windows 7 64-bit (any version) can ONLY use up to 16GB at once, don't overpay for something you cannot use.

Most recent set up I've had.
Laptop is Toshiba Qosmio x7270, but with a larger HDD than the stock version and a newer i5 than what it came with, and it's running Win7 though I have Win8 also installed.. It runs like a dream.
I love this desk >>

I might as well updaaate my setup on top of the other computers I have.
Servers I pay for, if I haven't done them already.

I've got a really small VPS used for web hosting, no point in specs. VPS = 'nuff said, hurdur.

- Dedicated called 'Auric' (this host is kinda uninformative)
Proc: Intel Celeron G530 Sandy Bridge 2x 2.4GHz
RAM: 4GB DDR3
BW: 100Mpbs
HDD: 250GB

- Dedicated that's unnamed, only will have it for around a month (unfortunately, also different host from Auric)
Proc: Intel Core i3 2x2 3.4GHz
RAM: 16GB DDR3
BW: 100Mbps
HDD: 2x 1TB SATA

First is for web hosting.
The second runs:
The third runs my Minecraft server, but usually Auric runs that. I'll have to move it back eventually.\

It's also nice to see my thread is still active. xD

MOAR UPDATE!

Replaced all with one server from OVH, and now have:

Proc: Intel i5 4x 3.0GHz
RAM: 16GB DDR3
BW: 100Mbps
HDD: 2x 1TB SATA
OS: Ubuntu Server 12.04

Runs all of the above that the above listed servers did. :3

Just sold my laptop to my amazing mate, and he used the money he bought it and some extra cash I have to order stuff for my brand new desktop. Should be here middle of next week, so here's what my new machine'll be~

A RaidMax Viper ATX Case (White)
A Western Digital 2.5TB Hard Drive, which'll compliment my other 500GB Hard Drive.
An Acer 21.5" LCD Monitor, running at 1920x1080, which'll compliment my 40" TV and 15" Monitor.
An EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW 4GB Edition GPU.
Two 18x DVD-Rom Drives.
A Raptor Gaming Keyboard.
A Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 3000
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x for 16 GB) RAM Running at 1333Mhz
An EVGA Z68 SLI Motherboard
An Intel Core i7 running at 3.8Ghz

I'll have no problem loving this thing.

With the help of Timmy with some second looks at my wiring, fixing the HDD error read, motherboard error readouts regarding RAM seating and setting up the XMP profile, the computer has been sorted out. Thanks to the royal cutefox.

Specs:

Thor V2 E-ATX Case
1000W Rosewill Lightning Power Supply
256GB ADATA SX900 Solid-State Drive
Corsair H100 CPU Cooler
Intel i7-3930K CPU
Galaxy GTX 680 4GB
G. Ripjaws X Series (4x8GB) 32GB (4x8GB) 2133mhz DDR3 RAM
EVGA x79 FTW Motherboard
Sidewinder X4 Keyboard
Logitech G700 Mouse
Asus 23.6" 1080p LED LCD Monitor
No disc drives, I find them useless.

The case has been modded with some extra screw holes on the top door that I hand drilled, so that the corsair h100 radiator and fans could coexist with the other 3 230mm fans around the inside of the case.

It's not impossible with proper planning and timing. But I'd say $300 would be the lowest end gaming solution you could do.
I've made ones from $400 to $2500, so anything's possible.

Can't tell if sarcastic, or... =I

Just to play "Modern games" at decent quality, you needn't spend more than $80 on Graphics alone, and then everything else is as simple as can be. Again, good planing and understanding of how everything comes together.

Simple, it doesn't need to run BF3 or Crysis maxed. Just it runs it on moderate graphics it's enough to be called a gaming computer. My laptop from school that uses shitty integrated graphics as opposed to a dedicated GPU can run some less demanding games like minecraft, portal and even call of duty.
It uses an i3 CPU and has 4 GB of RAM.

The term "gaming computer" has gotten pretty vague and many people associate it with a high-end computer. My definition is rather a computer that's decent enough to play some games on. Look at the price of consoles for example.

A high-end computer to me would be something more like mine with an i7 CPU and 16GB of RAM which is made for media and rendering. And before you say it's overkill, I've actually made good use of it. Had 90% RAM usage few times!

Yeah, that would be my exact definition, Timmy.
Best still-running example I can think of is my Dad, who *still* uses his GT 8600's, and 4GB Ram, and yet plays most modern games at medium/high. And that's going back at least 7 series of cards.

It was sarcasm, but my definition of a gaming computer is something that can run a recently released game on Medium-High settings, and by a recently released game I don't mean something like "Bejeweled the 2650th edition" I'm talking about stuff like BF3, Skyrim, etc.

I use 8GB's of 2133Mhz ram and have an i7 2600K 3.7GHz or something like that and it works fine on gaming about the only time you really need 16GB is like when you said rendering, because programs for stuff like that eat ram for breakfast. XD

My old 5770 GPU I have lying on the shelf, I paid I think $150 for it new price will run Crysis 2 and BF3 on medium settings just fine. And for a budget gaming PC, the GPU is often most expensive component. Additionally the AMD Trinity CPU's will run stuff like BF3 on decent fps and being a GPU+CPU in one kit.

And not to mention now a days you can get things like a 9800 GT for less that $70, and that'll run even the most graphical modern games on medium if you know what you're doing.

To be fair, anyone who says you need a computer that costs more than $1,000 to have an amazing machine has no clue, considering I've had computers of $900 or less that manage to run even better than computers running at $1500+.

But then I could slap a picture of an Otter on my computers and make people pay out the butt for them >=3 *Sarcasm*

Yeah with the build you got I'd be scared of a minesweeper game that could crash your computer ... so I take it you had no problems setting it up?

But holy crap combo, your Minecraft is either broken or running a ungodly amount of mods, I mean even using 256x256 Photo Realism Texture mod my MC only uses about 3-4GBs of RAM

No offense but that just proved you do not know what you are talking about.

A ramdisk is MUCH more inexpensive due to running on the RAM which is already installed in your PC and will run MUCH faster than your average SSD. A ramdisk is great for specialized applications where you need/want the insane speeds ramdisks offer. There are a few downsides, but nothing too major, the biggest is that you're limited in size depending on how much RAM you have and slower boot times.
And Combo has an SSD already.

Here's a visual example to show the difference: (left is a high-end consumer SSD, right is a ramdisk

Did you even look at the benchmark comparisons? The ramdisk destroys even those PCI ones you mention by offering nearly 9GB/s which is over 3 times faster than the very fastest SSD you can buy, the Z-Drive R4 RS88, which costs £14,000.
And that ramdisk wasn't even using the fastest RAM but regular cheap 1600MHz RAM.

My brother uses an OCZ SSD drive, so far he's had not problems with it I'm personally not to much of a fan when it comes to OCZ's stuff I'd probably get a Kingston HyperX 250GB one or something like that, Kingston makes pretty good stuff...

Yeah I mean a lot of OCZ I think have stability issues which I think is why I didn't like them ... but if your set on one company minus well get the best they offer XD
Actually, EVERYONE had the same stability issues as OCZ did.
OCZ was the main SSD manufacturer using the sandforce controller which has a ton of issues and thus got a ton of bad things to their name.

However, everything they do that does not use that Sandforce Controller such as the Vertex 4 and the Vector is actually said to be amongst the most stable and high performance drives on the market.

Just finished restoring an old throwaway, and added some minor beefs to it. No point in spending a lot, but it was fun.

OS: Windows 8 Pro 64-bit (upgraded from Vista Home Premium 64-bit)
System: HP Pavilion a6650f
Processor: AMD Phenom X4 9550 / 2.2 GHz Quad Core
Memory: 8.00 GB RAM DDR2 (Upgraded from 6.00 GB)
Integrated Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE / nForce 430
GPU: AMD Radeon HD5450 / 512MB DDR3 VRAM
Storage: Seagate 500GB / 7200RPM HDD (Upgraded from original, which I think was a Western Digital, don't remember. Already threw it away.)
Power: 500W Antec (Upgraded from 250W piece of crap)

Recently been taking in abandoned or throwaway desktops and laptops lately since I can't afford to build up another monster like my last one that cost me almost $1000.

Back in the summer, got myself a thrown away Sony Vaio VPCF12AFM/W gaming laptop. Folks spent like $600 bucks getting help from Sony and Microsoft and asked my idiot help back in the summer who just blankly told them the same crap that Sony and MS had told her, saying that the power supply/DC jack were broken. However, when I got it home, it just had a bad AC adapter and corrupted OS. Two hours to do a system restore and $40 for a new AC made it good as new.

Operating System: Windows 8 Professional 64-bit (Originally Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit)
System Model: Sony Vaio VPCF12AFM/W
Processor: Intel Core i3 i3-350M / 2.26 GHz Quad Core
Memory: 8.00GB RAM DDR3 (Upgraded from 3.69GB RAM DDR3)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 310M / 512MB DDR3 VRAM
Screen Size: 16.4"
Storage: Kingston 500GB 3Gb/s SSD (Upgraded from Samsung 500GB(455GB usable) 7200RPM HDD)

Hehe, a 250W power supply is that from the same Era as my 55MB HDD thats thats about 4inches tall 4inches wide and 6 inches long? (guessing as its sitting in my closet atm and I never went about measuring it)

140's and two 120's.

As for liquid nitrogen, that's cool but then you'd need to pay every time you buy another tank and it needs constant attention and quite a bit of maintenance.
I would like to try something mineral oil cooled, but that however has the disadvantage of being so hard to modify/upgrade once it's up and running that it's not necessarily worth it. Also when taking out a component it takes weeks to dry it!
Also for some clarification, I like it cool and I like it silent but I also like it requiring as little attention as possible once it's running (every once in a while removing some dust and cleaning dust filters are fine but you don't do that whilst it's running).

Really? they look bigger then that...

Yeah, I was just joking because I was talking with one of my professors and he mentioned someone had that. I personally don't trust liquid in close proximity with my electronics. Plus the liquid nitrogen system is redundant not only because its a $500 cooling system, but because you also need fans to keep it from forming condensation since it's so cold.

Speaking of dust I probably need to blow out my computer soon... *pears down at heat sink* ... yeah probably should do that...

Yea, I only know ramdisks from linux (frugal) systems and windows embedded (EWF function). Never thought of running windows off a ramdisk..... dont know if it will be much faster then having an enterprise class raid controller with fast disks? :?
Title: Re: Your computer
Post by: White Wolf Guardian on February 24, 2013, 06:45:50 PM
o.O you don't run windows on a ramdisk, that's crazy talk. Because you'd have to re-install it everytime you turn the computer back on, unless you like programmer a script that will do it for you every time. Ramdisks are however significantly faster than even Solid-State PCI-Express drives.
Title: Re: Your computer
Post by: TechRoo on February 24, 2013, 07:00:36 PM
Windows has a function called EWF (Enhanced Write Filter) which will put all file mutations on a ramdisk. So you don't really run windows from the ramdisk but rather put all new and modified files on the ramdisk. When you reboot the system the ramdisk is lost and the system is rebooted as it was when it was locked by EWF

Linux can be compressed into an image, which is unpacked after the bootloader and loaded onto a ramdisk. This way you can actually boot into linux from a live cd or flsh drive without installing. It also prevents the system from writing back to the boot media, which is ideal for things like CF cards with a limited amount of write cycles. It also helps if your boot media has a low bandwidth.

I am wondering if you can mimick a linux frugal boot, unpacking a snapshot of a windows system onto a ramdisk.

Same thing as relocating cache files to the Ramdisk, yes of course. But it's not really something I'd want to hassle with everytime I turn on the computer.

Buddywolf, if you are a true gamer, you need a 128GB SSD, a Logitech G9X Mouse (can change the weight of it), and replace the 16GB of DDR3 RAM with some simple 6~8GB GDDR5 RAM. And if you got the money, get the nVIDIA Titan, it is the most powerful graphic card on this planet.
Title: Re: Your computer
Post by: Nrein on April 03, 2013, 10:21:30 PM
*Cough cough* The Titan is just a rehashed GTX 690 with failed CUDA Cores that are locked and a lower core-clock. Nvidia even acknowledged that the Titan is not as powerful as the GTX 690 when it comes to performance. The only difference is the temperature and and power requirements.

TL:DR; GTX 690 > GTX Titan based on actual performance testing.

To be fair, these days you're a true gamer with a GTX 560 considering no game has enough graphical power to not run well enough on it on Max ;3
Title: Re: Your computer
Post by: drenteɳ on April 04, 2013, 05:02:05 AM
Lol, I don't think you can get a GDDR5 motherboard yet, or the actual RAM, at a shop. And games aren't about having the best graphics anyway, if you can run something on low, you'll still enjoy it if it's a good game.

Oh, yeah GTX690 = 2 underclocked 680s on a single card card. That means the max you can run is 2 690s in SLI, which is reaching the 4 GPU limit of SLI.
A GTX Titan, though, is a single GPU card. 4 Titans beats 2 690s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Titan contains the most powerful GPU you can buy at the moment, just WWAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY overpriced.

Also, GTX560 won't run Crysis 3 on max, and it'll be pushing it for BF3 even.

Post by: Nrein on April 04, 2013, 04:57:11 PM
I don't ever have the bother to check? Just based on what I see I'd say anywhere between 50 and 60. Considering I've already got it OC'd past the stock clock of most of the 600 series, but still only at a "perfectly stable" setting with more room to get higher.

It runs smoothly, hardly ever have any hiccups, and it looks great. 1920x1080, max settings.

Trust me when I say that being a hardware enthusiast for all my life has it's perks when it comes to getting the most out of my machine, even if I'm not spending $400+ on something like a graphics card ;D
Title: Re: Your computer
Post by: drenteɳ on April 05, 2013, 01:36:02 AM
Okay, OC'd the 560s are awesome.
Reminds me that I still got some OC room on this thing, especially the CPU.
With a 470, I'll probably hit a safe temp wall before I lose stability. CPU overclocking is a pain though, because I never reboot this thing so never get to the BIOS. I'll just OC if I ever need it.
Title: Re: Your computer
Post by: Nrein on April 05, 2013, 05:44:37 AM
My CPU I've got overclocked like crazy.

Stock it's already OC'd to 3.7, but my Motherboard was all like "Nah, I can do more" and have it boosted to 3.9 when I'm idle/low use, and 4.2 when I'm doing anything heavy like gaming and such.

Which is why I love my computer.

This post is extremely flawed.

- Only like 0,01% of all games actually benefit from SSD's so trust me, it makes NO difference most likely else than boot times... (I'm an early adopter to SSD's, got me one of those good ol' Crucial C300's so I know what I'm talking about).

- Mouses are extremely subjective, I've got myself a Mionix mouse and it also has weight adjustment and I like this a ton.

- While he doesn't benefit from it, having more RAM certainly doesn't hurt him. Just it's better for future proofing. GDDR5 RAM? You're mixing up graphics memory with regular RAM. GDDR5 is NOT the same as DDR3 and cannot be compared as so because of their different uses (notice one of them has G in front of it? That means it's for the graphics card!)

- Double 660 TI's or 7950/7970's would be better than a single Titan in terms of price for performance. Titan may be better on the paper but drivers also play a large role. And no it's not the fastest card on the planet. It's just the fastest chip. The 690 and 7990 will still surpass it in performance.

Now that I've roomed with another computer tecky, I've been able to get my hands on some more goods lately.

I've upped my space to about 2.5TB and have four/five monitors running now. Happy Otter is Happy and can't be told otherwise.

Anyway, since I last posted here, I have a random DVD burner I found which works and looks good enough,
as well as a Xonar DGX,
and a card reader I was waiting on for months,
oh, and parts for the lighting system have been ordered  ^_^

Currently I am building a new system; That is, I am saving up for building a new system (hopefully by September)

Corsair 600t SE
Asus Sabertooth Z77
Intel i5-3570k
8GB Corsair Dominator RAM
Corsair AX750 PSU
Samsung 840 128GB SSD (plus an old Hitachi 1TB mechanical drive I pulled from a broken external HDD)
Sapphire Radeon 7950
Lite-on CD/DVD drive (can't remember the model)
and finally a Corsair H100i

Keyboard and Mouse are an old Logitech EX110 wireless set
(Windows 7 x64, btw)

I have a question; Should I wait for the new release of Intel processors coming up soon (Haswell, Tick) and get one of those (I then need to change the board as the pin number changes from 1155 to 1150) or should I carry on what I am getting, saving money as the prices should drop and then get Broadwell (Tock) when it's released next year?

As for other PC's;

The one I am currently using is a HP TouchSmart 310-1110me running Linux Mint 14 "Nadia" with Cinnamon user interface and my laptop is a HP Pavilion G6-1252se (my current gaming machine. Poor, I know) running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

To be honest, whatever you buy will usually be outdated in less than 12 months.
If Intel follows previous trends, Haswell will be more of a leap than Broadwell (think Has-Broad is probably gonna be like Sandy-Ivy). That means that if you wait for Haswell, you'll probably be up-to-date for longer than dropping for Ivy Bridge now. But then again, Haswell is expected in June - before September - so I guess that kinda makes this whole thing irrelevant.
Either way though, your processor wouldn't be bad in any case.

Really? I would have thought Broadwell is more of a leap as it's a die shrink/Tick where-as Haswell is only a new microarchitecture/Tock. I think what I'll do is when September rolls round I will get Haswell and then wait until Broadwell is released for an upgrade to the system, as you said.

Other then that everything is OK, yes? You never know, I may change the parts list by the time September is here.
Title: Re: Your computer
Post by: drenteɳ on May 22, 2013, 12:11:08 PM
Probably wait until September to finalise things, because most new things tend to come mid-year.
Having said that though, I don't see any major issues with it.

Also, Broadwell is a manufacturing leap more than Haswell, but usually shrinking something doesn't make it that much better. Changing everything around does make a difference though.
Title: Re: Your computer

As far as I know rightn ow, Broadwell won't be coming out until around a year after Haswell. Broadwell will be the Ivy to Haswell's Sandy in terms of what it'll be like, as far as I've been able to tell.

Which is good, as I will build the system based on Haswell and then upgrade when June 2014 rolls around roughly 9 months later.
If you remember though Ivy was a massive improvement over Sandy, and from past experiences the Tick stage is usually faster than the Tock but the Tock is usually more efficient power wise.

Either way, we'll see when Broadwell rolls around next year.

Yeah it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Regardless of the quality I know I won't be able to afford it, but I'm happy enough with what I have right now in terms of CPU x3

Okay, im ripping my old pc apart and doing a little update.
I wont update the motherboard or CPU since ill wait for the next architecture, and the current hardware is still fast enough.

Ill also be building my own test bench case, ill post some images when done...

MOBO: Asus Rampage Extreme
CPU   : Intel i7 990x (6 core, 3,7GHZ)
MEM   : 32GB 1600MHZ CL8 (board will only support 24GB though.)
HDD   : 2x Intel 500MB/sec SSD 250GB (Mirrored)
VIDEO: 2x Asus GForce TITAN (SLI)
POWER: 1200W PSU

Its gonna be a beast  XP

Finally got to do a decent upgrade!
Moved from my old Q6600 quad core, with 4 gigs of ram...to...

i7-4770k - havent OC'd yet, but dangit haswell, why couldn't you be an amazing overclocker :(
Asus z87-Pro Motherboard
16 gb (2x8gb) 1866 Mhz G-skill sniper RAM
way too many old HD's
MSI Twin Frozr HD 7950 3gb
Antec 900 (original Antec 900 case from like 7-8 years ago, heck yeah!)
OCZ modXtreme 700 watt modular PS
Cooler master hyper 212+

I'm happy, until I have enough money for another SSD. Current SSD is in my laptop. My god so much RAM. So glad I didn't do 32 gb.

Meet my mobile computer- the galaxy Note 3. With features including opening a window on top of another, having two open at once splitting the screen, built in stylus, and floating keyboard- this phone can do things I don't even think most tablets can. It comes packed with 3GB or RAM, and an overwhelming number of features. IR Blaster, temperature and humidity sensors, proximity sensor, and many others. For once the bloat ware is somewhat useful as well- Google chrome, translate, sketch pad, and document editor.
The only thing that gets me is the size, however it is very useful and we'll worth it- drawing, viewing photos, and playing games.

Let's see...
... Oldest to newest.
One 9.5 year old dell Inspiron 1300. Currently will not run more then 1 program with out freezing solid. Primarily get used to run non interactive programs, (it runs christmas light shows). This computer is indestructible, it has been dropped so many times, run in -40 weather, run in conditions of extreme dust, I have no idea how it even turns on.
Runs Xp professional.

One 5 year old dell vostro. Piece-0-crap right from the factory, thankfully I got it free.
This computer actually functions properly.
Runs Xp.

Now my pride and joy, my custom built PC.
I had it built for me by a shop, however it cost the same as if I built it myself (they get a wholesale price)
Do not ask me what's in it, I have no idea.
This runs Windows 7.

The first two are laptops btw.

The rest is still the old stuff, 32Gig DDR3 1600mhz ram, asus rampage extreme, I7 990x extreme processor overclocked. More then fast enough to play all of the current games @ max

-Edit,
Allmost forgot, I did throw in two 500GB Solid state drives..

Well, I guess I'll start with a list of my rigs.
First is a 10 year old dell Inspiron, that has been used and ABUSED.
It's got no battery, it's got dents and cracks, and a surprising around of JB weld.
I use it to run my light show, and that is all it can handle.

Next is a 7 year old dell vostro, POS new. It's still pretty usable and fast. Thankfully I got it free, the rule in the IT " department" it if it doesn't turn on, off the shelf at the annual Clean out its trash.
Department is a stretch, the server room is all the servers and crap in piles on the floor with half a dozen extension cords running into the ceiling! @.@

My next rig is a custom built one, don't ask me what's in it as iDK. Had it built, computers aren't my thing, but I still know that "box store" 'puters are POS.

Current:

Desktop:
Name: Indri
OS Windows 7 64bit
Motherboard: Gigabyte M68MT-S2
CPU: Phenom II x4 [email protected]
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: Radeon HD 6870, occasionally overclocked up to 980MHz
HDD: 1TB x1
Input: DELL AT-102W mechanical kb (ALPS black switches), Cherry M-5400 mouse (ALL the clicky input devices)
Case: POS R series (four fan contollers, eSATA, frontpanel USB+audio)
Additional: Lightscribe DVD drive, RAID card.
Notes:
Made from parts of a friend's old desktop (mobo, CPU, one stick of RAM), RAID card required as GPU covers up most of the SATA ports x.x.
Named after a planet from Star Trek TOS

Laptop:
Name: Tio
OS: Windows 7 64bit
Model: Fujitsu Lifebook AH530GFX
CPU: i3 350M dual [email protected]
GPU: Radeon HD 550v
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Chipset: Mobile Intel HM55 Express
HD: 500GB x1
Screen: 1366x768
Additional: DVD writer
Notes: Really nice piece of kit for the £500 it was three years ago; very good keyboard; nice screen -if a bit low-res-; though the touchpad is tiny and the speakers -while loud- are tinny. Named after I kept calling it 'that one', shortened to 'TO', then to 'Tio'.

Laptop:
Name: Coal
OS: Arch GNU/Linux / Windows XP ( Windows almost never used)
Model: Thinkpad x60
CPU: Core Duo [email protected]
RAM: 2GB PC2-5300
GPU: Intel GMA 950
Screen: 1024x768
Chipset: Intel 945 mobile
HD: 320GB
Additional: Docking station with stereo speakers, DVD drive; extended battery; fingerprint reader; 3G modem.
Notes:
Named because the trackpoint pointing device is also known colloquially as a 'tit-mouse', this happens to be an old name for the coal tit, a small bird, hence: Coal.
The keyboard on this is one of the lovely older Thinkpad ones, so is very pleasent to type on, and, as it features a trackpoint, there's no messing about with one of those stupid trackpads most laptops have.

Other:
Diplodocus: An old desktop I was given by a computer shop which would have otherwise thrown it out, very old and heavy, hence the name. Has a Pentium at somewhere between 133 and 233MHz (Set manually in BIOS, but I'm not sure what's the correct setting, and haven't got around to looking it up), and 192MB RAM. Windows 95. Unused.

Old desktop (unnamed): Was my main machine for quite some time: Athlon XP [email protected], 1GB RAM, 1x160GB and 1x40GB HDD, had a Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB GPU, which fried itself, currently has a Radeon 7500 32MB in it. Windows XP . Unused.

Black Widow: Given to me by my old sixth form as they no longer had a use for it. 800MHz PIII, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD. Named for the mating habits of the spider; had a lot of issues with this machine when I was using it: When you turned it on, something bad happened. Ubuntu. Unused.

Also have a broken (GPU dead) DELL Inspiron 2500, an HP with some sort of Celeron@~2GHz, a Thinkpad 600, and a Comppaq SLT 286 -a portable from 1989- lying about the place. Also lots of Commodore 64s and VIC-20s, a couple of Commodore Plus-4s, an Amiga 1200, a Spectrum 2+, at least one Commodore 16, and a couple of BBC Masters (One with an 80186 coprocessor board for running IBM software).

Well... this was long: tl;dr: I should get rid of some computers.

Edit: Ok, how do I stop it rendering the name of an operating system as an emoticon? x.x

I have 2 computers. A laptop and a desktop. I won't bother talking about the laptop it's good for nothing more then league and maplestory on the off chance I decide to play it.

My desktop is the firs computer I ever custom built. Basically, I had a computer before this one that could run... anything I threw at it. It had an i7 processor that ran at 3.4 GHz (I can't remember the model number), 8 gigs of ram (that I upgraded to 16 gigs), Nvidia Geforce GT530 (very outdated card but it ran everything like a charm), it originally had a 530 or something like that power supply but i upgraded to a 850 for future upgrading purposes, It also had a 1tb hard drive which I filled up and had to get an additional 2tb drive.

So that desktop failed. there was a short in one of the USB drives and when I plugged something into it the motherboard was rendered useless.Thankfully, my uncle was building a new computer at the time. so he gave me all the parts from his old computer. All I had to buy was a case, so essentially i got 4 years use out of a 1000 dollar computer, then paid 50 dollars for a brand new (he only had the parts for like a month) computer. All I had to do was buy a case because well. that was my choice, i hated the stock case that asus gave me.

That was a few months ago and yea, this thing is still running strong. It's not quite as powerful as my old one, I can't run all the games i used to (witcher won't even start) but until I get the money for some upgrades it will still be in use cause it does run a lot of what i play.

here are the specs of the new computer (some parts were recycled cause I had just bought them when my old computer died)

AMD A8-5500 APU @ 3.2 GHz

16 Gigs of RAM

2 TB hard drive (my 1 TB drive died)

120 GB SSD (OS Drive)

850 Watt PSU

and im going to be saving after my vacation for a 2 gig GPU

So there you have it. I got a good run out of my old one and learned a lot of new things from this build! I built the whole thing by myself using some youtube videos as guides (its really quite easy) the SSD just holds the OS and OS dependent programs as my uncle calls it, and the 2TB drive holds all my storage, games, and most of my programs. The thing boots up in like 10 seconds with that SSD even still today. But all in all its a pretty good machine!

[Insert basement dweller joke here]
Put downstairs because that way I didn't wake the whole house with my conversations. Originally was supposed to be temporary, but things are complicated.

The mac is probably the most obvious; 16GB RAM, intel Quad-core i7 CPU, running OSX Maverick. 2 years old and still a great system.

The computer on the left is an Ubuntu computer I built with spare parts. MSI Mobo, 6x core CPU, 8GB RAM, single HDD (may eventually be double), XFX R7 240 Radeon graphics card, Monitor is an old 720p TV I had lying around. Great for just about anything, though mostly use it for web-based actions and mid-low processes.

The computer on the right is a real Windows 7 powerhouse: x8 core 4.0Ghz AMD CPU, NVidia GE Force GTX 770 GPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Several HDD and singe SSD, 27" 1080p IPS monitor + 23" 1080p Touchscreen, Intuos Pro Medium graphic Tablet, ACE 5.8Ghz Wireless Gaming Headset, front-mounted multi-card reader with USB 3.0, Blue Yeti Microphone, Logitech: G600 (mouse), G510 (keyboard), G13 (macro board), G230 (wired analog backup gaming headset), C920 (1080p HD Webcam),  5.1 Surround Sound + Sub-wuffer (can't recall model number). Used for gaming, Video Production (Mic is for Voice-over), Game Dev experimenting, just about anything really.

What you don't see in this picture:

-The iPad was recently replaced with an android powered Asus TF700T Transformer Pad Infinity.

-Samsung Galaxy Note II Android Phone.

-Acer Aspire One Netbook (had windows, put Ubuntu on it): dual core intel Atom CPU, 2GB DDR3 RAM.

Should also mention that up until this last January, I'd never touched a computer part in my life. Had an A+ Certified friend of mine show me how, and let's just say this was probably the quickest skill I ever picked up on (Having a background in programming didn't hurt). Now a-days I find myself happy when elbows-deep in computer guts  XP

I have two computers, both of which are by most peoples standards, Old and way under powered.

Dell Latitude XT 2007
Processor   Intel U7700 Core2Duo 1.33Ghz
Ram          3GB (max supported) DDR2 Ram
GPU          ATI Radeon X1200
HDD         80GB Pata Platter drive (yes it sucks as bad as you think)
Screen     1280x800 LED lit, 4-point Multi touch screen + Pen digitizer
OS           Windows 7 Professional N x64

I use this mostly for note taking, and a little sketching, and sometimes home blueprint designs since it has the nice touch screen and pen.

Lenovo T61p 2008
Processor    Intel T7700 Core2Duo OCed to 2.6Gz
Ram           4GB DDR2 Ram
GPU           Nvidia Quadro 570m (also over clocked substantially)
HDD          500GB WD Caviar Black
Screen       Laptop: 1920x1200 matte  External: Samsung t240HD 1920x1200
OS            Windows 7 Ultimate x64 / Mint 17 with Mate

This is pretty much just used as a desktop solely. It runs pretty well for most things, I play games on it, type papers, rip music and movies and such. Its old but I can at least max out Source engine games, I can play SC2 on high and play Skyrim on medium (with the distances set to mid way, closer to the high settings) Its pretty good to me other than the battery only lasting 4 hours.

Well guess I should start with what it is...  Though it's not that important to know what it is so much as how crappy it is, but oh well...  It is a Compaq Presario CQ56-201NR, aka a total piece of junk.  It may seem better than some to most, but for games, something I do a lot, it SUCKS. x_x

Anyway, it has 2 GB RAM, with one open slot (now if I only knew how to tell what type it takes and individuals it could take past that >.> ) and a crappy Intel brand video card with pretty much no visual memory to my knowledge (if it does it rarely uses it).  It has about 250 GB hard drive space, most of which is constantly used up because MUST HAVE ALL THE GAMES!   >.> -> <.<  sorry, spazzed for a second  XD ANYWAY lets see...  it doesn't have much else to say about it, really, other than im pretty sure  I have messed up the battery beyond repair :/

Also, I know this does not go here, but my "spazzed" has a misplaced line and "pretty" has like a line under 2 letters, not sure what in the heck is going on there...  But yeah, it has been with me through troubled times, including when I had to re install EVERY SINGLE DRIVER by taking it to Best Buy people, due to a single virus wiping them after crashing my computer...  So yeah! Fun.

I built one back in Feb and been progressively upgrading even since then, thought this thread would be good to show it  ^_^

CPU: Intel i5 4690k, overclocked by moi to 4.5GHz
Motherboard: Asus Z97-A
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance (Soon to upgrade I think)
GPU: Asus R9-290X
PSU: Corsair AX-760
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i-GTX
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO
HDD(s): 250GB Toshiba, 1TB Hitachi and a 3TB Western Digital
Chassis: Corsair 600t SE (White)
And a Liteon ihas124-b DVD burner (rarely needed, let's face it)

All running off Windows 10, which is leaps and bounds better than 8, not as good as 7 and has worrying privacy settings. Oh and forced updates suck.

I <3 Corsair & Asus XP

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i-GTX
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO
HDD(s): 250GB Toshiba, 1TB Hitachi and a 3TB Western Digital
Chassis: Corsair 600t SE (White)
And a Liteon ihas124-b DVD burner (rarely needed, let's face it)

All running off Windows 10, which is leaps and bounds better than 8, not as good as 7 and has worrying privacy settings. Oh and forced updates suck.

I <3 Corsair & Asus XP
Sounds like a really nice build! :D

Yeah, good times

And when user manuals were printed for a game and actually told you how to play.

Also Mass Effect had one separate page with controls.

My computer has been doing its dutiful mumble and gaming duties happily since late 2013, I'm proud to say it's still with me for the forseeable future.
I have a spec list here: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Mazzy/saved/#view=fKdbt6
I spent about £1.7k on it altogether, so I don't expect to have to spend a whole lot on it until one of the more major components dies or something.

I bought my computer about 2 years ago. It was a used computer, 2010 and it was a pretty decent price. I enjoy having my own separate computer that I can do anything on without wondering if someone might be upset that I use up space downloading this or that and for an old computer, it works pretty smooth. I don't think I'll have to update to a new computer for awhile. The thing I like about it most, is that the screen is HUGE. It can also rotate to the side, which creates an even bigger screen AND it has a USB port on the side, which is pretty cool, since I'll be getting a drawing tablet real soon.

I recently got an MSI laptop, can't even remember the specs right now but its the nicest computer I've had. I've been wanting to splurge on a gaming computer for a while and finally did it.
I don't even have time to game during school; its just nice to be able to run all my design programs at once and not get a blue screen ^^;

Yeah, that's expensive, but with that, I won't have any problems for my games :3
Oh god I'm so excited ! I will build it myself  ^_^

Also, 8gb of ram is 1333, the 16gb is 1600 - that's a strange bug with the program

I haven't but I've done the same in a minecraft server just fine with like several thousands of TNT going off simultaneously.

Also, have you actually monitored the memory usage? Since explosions tend to use a lot of physics calculations it's more likely to be a CPU thing than RAM; So unless your RAM is at 100% usage (all of those 16GB being in use) and the CPU is NOT at 100% usage, there won't be no difference whatsoever to adding more.

Another (hopefully obvious) thing; Is the game 32 or 64 bit? Because any game that's made for 32bit can't even use more than 4GB of RAM anyway.

I'm talking a Minecraft server I ran on my own PC, the same PC I used to also play the game on. This had an i7 and a rather old GPU.

And uh, if you're playing with thise specs; That's a mobile (low power) CPU with 2 cores and a low-end mobile GPU. No wonder it would lag because it's clearly not enough CPU power to keep up with those levels of physics.

More RAM won't make it faster...

My computer on the floor of my room, had some issues with it. Kept on bluescreening when starting up, even in safe mode.  :S  I'm getting a laptop now, need it for school too.

Most of the builds I have on PC Part Picker as a completed build that I update whenever any changes are made those you can find in these links:
BIG PC: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/xQGG3C (https://pcpartpicker.com/b/xQGG3C) (Needs to be updated I have a 144hz 1080p monitor now and a GTX 1070ti) (attached is some updated pictures)
Mini PC: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/8w7WGX (Needs to be updated this one has the AMD RX 480 8gb that used to be in the BIG PC now)

I do have Portable PC build that isn't on PC Part Picker and has a i5 7600k, 16gb of RAM, two 120gb SSDs, 1tb HDD, and the GTX 1060 6gb I had in the Mini PC, a picture of that PC is attached too

That looks like a nice build (In that thin case)

I still pick Intel and Nvidia, but that's only because it works better for what I need it for.

I finally upgraded my over summer and Christmas.
Got rid of my 980GTX's and replaced them with EVGA 1080GTX's (kept the SLI bridge)
And got a Z370 MOBO with an i7-8700K rather than my old i7-975EE.
My 64GB of DDR3 1800 was replaced with 16GB of DDR4 3000.
Swapped out my 128 GB Kingston SSD with the Samsung V-NAND 850 EVO 1TB.
I still have my 1TB SSD/7200 hybrid, but I've added a WD-RED 4TB and a Seagate 2TB 7200 HDD since then.
Also swapped out my old Antec 902 tower with a Rosewill Midnight Edition. (Couldn't stand not having USB 3.0 on the front, and it was 80% at the time)

My computer is kinda a Frankenstein monster right now. I bought the original computer from cyberpower PC as a introduction gaming pc then I upgraded from there. Here is the parts list.

CPU: AMD FX-8320 vishera black edition
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master 212 evo with 120mm single fan.
Ram: 2x4 gigs of generic ram
Graphics card: Gigabyte GTX-950 with 90mm fan
Power Supply: EVGA 750GQ Gold 80+
Mother Board: MSI 760gm-p34
Case: Cyberpower generic case.

Benchmarks.
Skyrim at ultra 60 to 90 FPS
Crysis 3 30 fps on high
League of Legends 120 to 150 FPS on max
Diablo 3 45 to 60 on high

I'll toss my "beast" into the mix. Tossed it together about 5 years ago now? Since then all I've done is I recently upgraded the GTX 670 OC to a GTX 1060 OC. My 670 was starting to feel a tad too old for my likings. I could play DOOM, but it had to be on lowest settings. Other games were just starting to feel slow too, like WoW wasn't running at as high of a framerate as I used to see.

Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z77
CPU: Core-i5 3570K running at 4GHz turbo'd
GPU: ASUS GTX 1060 OC 6GB VRAM
RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) G.SKILL Ripjaws [Really should toss two more in just because right?! lol]
PSU: Corsair HX750
Case: Antec Twelve Hundred V1 with replaced red LED fans instead of blue
Monitor: Samsung BX2231
1TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD OS drive, 1TB WD Black HDD for games, 320GB HDD for random junk
Razer Anansi keyboard
Razer DeathAdder Elite mouse
Razer Megalodon headset
and it's optically hooked up to a Samsung 7.1 surround system for sound

And it's adorned with a RoboRaptor on top! XD

Thanks! I know it's not top of the line or anything, but it handles everything I throw at it. And that's all it needs to do! Plus the 1200 is a good looking case imo.

I have three, actually, and they're connected (mostly) in a network.

My main rig for gaming/anything, really is a 3.8Ghz i5 with 8GB RAM, an RX-550 graphics card, a 500GB drive, and a mostly-empty Thermaltake gaming case. No wi-fi on the board because, for some reason, the Ethernet loves to randomly stop working on TCP/IPV4...

Most of my actual storage and (theoretical) internet access is from  2Ghz, 4GB RAM ultra-thin Dell laptop. It's got all the USB hubs hooked to it and it's got an 8TB external hard drive, as well as a USB-Ethernet adapter so that I can get (when it wants to) Internet over ICS and I can access all the files on that 8TB drive easily by having it set as a network drive.

And then for old software and DOS/Win9X gaming I have a Pentium II with a 10GB IDE drive, two non-functional floppy drives (gonna have to find a way to get that working...), a CD-ROM drive, 128MB RAM and a 266Mhz clock speed. I'm getting a Soundblaster 16 for it and a Compactflash-IDE adapter so I can just swap CompactFlash cards if I want to change the OS I'm running or load/transfer software to and from it. They're both on the way.

I'm currently using a budget build 2009 desktop
Intel i7-870 CPU, AMD Radeon HD 5770 GPU, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM

I have a desktop which uses an AMD-FX 8-core processor -- I think 8350 or something like that. But the graphics card is super budget because I tacked it on to the end, so my far better computer is actually a laptop -- Dell XPS 13 with Intel i7, the big SSD, 4k touchscreen...

I love my keyboard, though. Cherry MX Blue switches:

Just updated this year. Got rid of the extra hard drives and replaced my GTX 1080's.

i7-8700k
ASUS z390 MOBO
Nightwing 32GB DDR4 3000MHz RGB Memory
Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 4TB 7200RPM HDD
EVGA 1080ti x2 w/ EVGA SLI Bridge
Rosewill Midnight Limited Edition Medium ATX tower
Corsair Hydro H100i Liquid Cooling
Corsair 850W Power supply

Unfortunately, I have succumbed to buying all Corsair RGB... All my accessories now glow together in a pattern. I'm so ashamed....

My computer is that worst thing ever with a whopping ram of...huh?...Uh,Ok. Apparently it only  ha 5 megabits of ram. A huge tota--Okay, a total of 1 mega byte storage. The best part? It only crashes once a hour. Hold on…Okay, apparently it's not a computer…It's a kindle. Huh.

OK, so, slight update, my old motherboard is dead so I shoved my i5, GPU and RAM into an HP office machine and I do most of my internet stuff on a 2006 Athlon dual-booting Lubuntu i386 and Windows 7 Ultimate, with ATI integrated graphics and 4GB of RAM. I also have them properly connected to the Internet via Ethernet as well.

So i did a little update

ryzen 7 3700X
RX580 8GB
16GB DDR4 ram
 i also addeda 1tb m.2 nvme drive (i think)
a new 2tb hard drive for even more backup storage...

i have to admit the fx3600 i had before served me well but it was time for an update... a major update.

I mostly play games and do a tiny bit of photo editing so this is kinda overkill for what i need probably but heck, why not?

Um, let's see.

I'm trying to upgrade to a new laptop for Christmas. My mom and I are both doing the necessary research when it comes to looking for what has the right processor and GPU.

Currently, I'm using and Acer Nitro 5, but am looking at a New Dell Inspiron 15. My benchmark detector app showed that the Inspiron may be the way to go.

The reason I want to upgrade is because a lot of the games I have on Steam at the moment just can't be supported.

My setup is a bit janky, but it seems to work fine.

OS: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 22H2 (2021)
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance 2133MHz (4x8GB)
CPU: Intel i5-8600K
GPUs: AMD Radeon RX6700 XT 12GB, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti 8GB
Motherboard: MSI Z370-A PRO (MS-7B48)
Disks: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe SSD, Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SATA SSD
Keyboard: ASUS ROG STRIX SCOPE (Evangelion Edition)
Mouse: Logitech G502
Microphone: Audio Technica AT-2020-USB+
Headphones: Sony WH1000-XM4
Monitors: ASUS VG279Q1A (1080p@144hz), LG 24ML600M (1080p@60hz)

A lot of people seem to take issue with my dual GPU configuration. I, personally, haven't run into any issues. My primary GPU is the Radeon GPU, which is the one my monitors are plugged into. The NVIDIA GPU is used entirely for GPU offloading tasks (NVENC and video rendering) so is idle most of the time.
