First, I would suggest asking the builder her/himself what her/his suggestions and tips are on maintaining the suit, secondly I would think not to put it in a washing machine, and sure as hell not a dryer. If it really needs cleaning I would do so with hand and soup, with just regular cold water.
I'm not an expert on this at all, but that is what I believe is best to do.
I also think if your suit has long hair (parts) then brush/comb regularly.
Performing in a suit is all up to you really. If you want to act in a certain way do so, and in a fun way :)
If you want to be yourself, the be yourself, whatever makes you feel comfortable I would suggest.
Hope this helped.

Like Ventus said, it's a good idea to ask your suit maker how to care for it, but this should also help: http://www.matrices.net/washing.asp (http://www.matrices.net/washing.asp)
