Trust me, there are Goths and Emos around here. I affiliate myself with Goth culture, I just don't have my optimum look yet. I usually listen to music like Nighwish, Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, Combichrist, Celldweller and Blue Stahli, which, while not all are specifically labelled Goth (primarily the last three), still fit the motif in a way. My writing is often macabre in some way and geared towards eliciting specific emotional responses and moods, and my readers tend to say my writing feels more dark and heavy hitting in its atmosphere, regardless of the endeavor.

Likewise, I have always been an offshoot from the crowd. I have a habit of tending to lean away from things that are super "expected" of people. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't do anything like that, and I refuse to ever even consider them. I keep to myself and prefer the company of tight knit groups of friends in my everyday life. So, I tend to fit the "nonconformist" definition of Goth just as well as the artistic side... and I so do love giving myself the title. However, any other stereotypes associated with the "Goth Kids" are not things I follow. No cynicism, no isolation, no scoffing at every "Prep" or "Jock" I see, and I don't resist making friends who have followed the crowd. It's my life choice to break from the common path and follow "the one less traveled by." Others are free to follow whichever path they choose, and whether or not our paths ever cross again is irrelevant to me, my best wishes will always follow.

So there you go, a tiny little explanation of why I call myself Goth. Just my own little twist.

That's pretty cool. I myself stay off drugs too, and I'm also a writer-I haven't shown my stuff to many people yet so I don't know what emotional impact, if any, my work has-and tend to do a lot of gothic horror (In the classical sense: look up gothic fiction on Wikipedia, its quite different from what you might expect) And other than that I'm a bit of a stereotype-but I can't help but wear an awful lot of black(And occasionaly, corpse paint) stay in dark places and creep people out with my paleness: Its as though I'm naturally inclined towards being a walking cliché...But its fun, and the others I hang out with put up with it.

Don't mean to offend but what exactly is an emo and goth and how are they different in the long run? I've heard many answers but I want one on how think just in case I was reading stereotypes.

I drift between Goth and Industrial.
I've sort of been listening to more industrial bands like Skinny Puppy, Front 242, KMFDM, and such recently.
As far as Goth, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, Clan of Xymox, and there are a bunch of others that I listen to but those were the first few I thought of.
I want to go to bed and sleep and stuff.

Okay, I can answer that.

Goth was a stylistic movement as a whole. The entire background lies as a subset of Punk culture alongside Emo, but even more directly. When Punk faded a bit back in the early 80's, Goth took to the "mainstream" in its place, with bands like Siouxsie  and the Banshees taking root as Goth by their fanbases. Many Goths tend to have an affinity for addressing the unaddressed (the things stereotypical parents would fear telling their kids, or things society would like to suppress), while others like to use the style to shock people or reflect their past. It all depends on the individual. But in general, the movement follows punk in one regard: **censor** the system. Unlike the stereotypes, it is not constant belligerence towards opposing ideals (the stereotype of hating on preps and jocks, or mocking followers of the crowds). It's very much an artistic stance on that statement, and as such, many Goths view it as a "breaking away" from the standard "system."

The Emo movement was rather settled, and tends to be centered around something that was and still is ignored. It started with music, unlike Goth which started from Punk and fully metastasized from music. Emo spawned from the music first, but the music was around an ideology. The ideology is that "men can show emotion." Since even now, guys are mocked for showing "weakness" as they call it. The stereotypes of emos are all wrong, and being emo has absolutely nothing to do with those things. It comes as a result of people mocking them for expressing their true feelings.

Those are very concise descriptions of what set Goths and Emos apart. I know more about Goth culture than Emo, but someone made a very, very well written description of the differentiation somewhere. I believe it was on here, even.

I really hate to sound hipster, but I was emo before it was cool. When scene kinda stole the spotlight I moved away from it. Emotionally, I'm still there, and I identify with the gothic aesthetic a whole lot, but the most common music for either doesn't really fit me. I need to go and listen to some of the older gothic music like Sisters of Mercy, though, cause "Ribbons" keeps getting stuck in my head...

If I lived away from home, I'd probably go full on goth, or at least have the option in my wardrobe. But alas.

I believe the goth kids from South Park would take issue with you grouping goths so closely with emos  XD

I think i have a very mild goth vibe goin on with my sense of style  ;) my attire usually consists of black everything with the exception of my blood red hair (that im trying to make purple as we speak)

During my teen years i was full-blown emo. Now it's almost non-existent.

Welp! I've had my period of dressing in Gothic clothing, although I still do at times. I've stopped dying my hair black a few years ago and I don't really regret that. If I'm looking into the alternative styles later on, I'll probably find myself with a more cyber-inspired look. :3

I guess it's time for a picture (take note, this is more than half a decade old; apologies for the crappy quality):
