Trading Cards Games and Card Collection
« on: March 28, 2015, 06:52:26 PM »
In an ever growing world of technological improvements, digital multimedia and computer gaming, I find myself wondering if some of the older forms of entertainment are still popular amongst the masses, specifically the trading card variety. Ever since I was a child, I've known of card games such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Duel Monsters and Pokemon being popular around me, and even now, I play Magic the Gathering on a regular basis.

Is this a rare thing? Do any of you folks still take part in trading card collection and playing? Do you have a collection of your own? Do you wish to get back into the world of trading cards, or perhaps have you never even tried cards but would be interested in doing so?

I'd love to have a chat about the topic of trading card games here, and see what people feel about them. To me, they will always be timeless, and something that everyone could quite easily enjoy if embraced, but that's simply my view. What do you guys think?

I collect pokemon cards still, just haven't bought any recently. My prized possession is the shadowless holographic 1st edition base set Charizard PSA 10 that has been sealed in a glass case since 2002.

..Oh wow, quite the trophy. I've not managed to nab anything of such rarity in my time, sadly, but I always envy those who have such things.

I play one called Cardfight Vanguard with a large group of friends, and we have a blast. We recently started playing MTG Commander as well with weekly meetups. I have played YuGiOh in the past, but I got tired of it.

My friendgroup has always been into cardgames, and i will definitely be playing them in the far future!

I've been meaning to get into Commander, but the rules are a little off my tastes to get into. Plus, 100 unique cards? Kinda hard to do without proxies.

I would say it is harder to acquire  4 of a single card without proxies! I actually didn't  enjoy MTG much at all before i tried commander. I didn't  think i would like Commander much either until I tried it. I suppose Commander requires a patient/easygoing group to play with in order to get the most enjoyment out of it. I got lucky with my group!

I like Commander because the game mode allows more "fun" or gimmicky decks to finction. Commander allows All kinds of silly combos to work which would seldom  ever see the light of day in normal MTG.

In case it wasn't obvious enough, Pokémon TCG is something I am heavily into. I'm still learning some of the new  rules and such, but it's pretty simple overall (obviously). I do collect them mostly, but as someone who loves to compete, I can take what I have and make use of them in a 'duel.'

Yu-Gi-Oh is a game I was into in the past, but after my whole collection was stolen by someone I thought I could trust, I stopped. I couldn't buy anything, since I was, like, ten. I had some scary cards for the day... like Relinquished and Thousand Eyes Idol.  Oh, and I had  Polymerization alongside the Thousand-Eyes Restrict card...

Yeah, I was THAT kind of player. I had other scary cards, but I stopped during the original introduction of Slifer the Sky Dragon, Obelisk the Tormentor and The Winged Dragon of Ra.

This is true enough, and I will admit the temptation to make a Commander Dragon deck, with how ridiculously funny the combos there are, is overwhelming.

That being said, I'll always prefer standard because there's something quite amusing about having 4 Cancels in your deck to make your friends spit teeth at.

I actually forgot Slifer wasn't actually called the Executive Producer.

Yu-Gi-Oh's gods interested me enough to start playing but at the time I was rather.. Well.. Dumb. I couldn't get my head around the rules, and now I'm able to understand them, MtG has it's firm little mitts around my wallet and Hearthstone is waiting round the corner lest I try to run away, so I can't really bring myself to justify playing YGO as well. I have friends who still play, though, and the game is very entertaining to watch.

I once found a card that was worth $200 in a McDonalds box, I lost it unfortunately, but I remember the stars.

..Why do people I know always have such luck?

Pokemon and Magic the Gathering for me

Oh yeah? How long you played both for?

Question for everyone here: What's your favourite card, and why?
