Interviewed About Furries, Need Reviewed
« on: April 12, 2016, 07:53:32 PM »
About an hour till the interview, wrote up myself a quick essay over the past few days after some research. Wanted reviewed before i hand it over. I wrote about everything, so it gets a little touchy.
Sorry for only giving an hour, work has kept me busy and my girlfriend (who is also being interviewed with me).
So whatcha think and any tips?
Left out the part where i talk about myself to answer questions the journalist wanted me to think about when we met for the actual interview and article today since i'm not worried about that part. This was done in my opinion and my own research (copying others is bad)
This is based off my own opinions from a mix as a furry and as an outsider to try and give perspective but it's mostly just a quick touch up. Did this in LibreOffice and had to use the microsoft.doc export option for the forums so i hope the format isnt wonky for anyone.

I'll put a quick poke on your last "ugly" bullet point.

"other-kin" is one name for it, "Therianthropy" is the official name, with people calling themselves "Therians."

Otherwise, the rest of it sounds ok to me.

I will change it before i hand it over and be sure to refer to is Therians if asked further about it.
This essay i smostly just to help me, I'm really not much of a social person. I'm only doing this to try and build better understanding with the public as a furry. Love this fandom too much to see it hated for no real reason.

Edit: Also removed the 10,000 people thing. I've read reports about these events causing over 10,000 people to flock to the city holding these events but never cite their sources. Just to be safe, since WikiFur is more likely to come up than some buried article on google, I changed it. Getting nervous about if i should stick to my own research or modify things to look more considerate since most people won't take much time to look into anything at all.

It's good, but punctuation needs a lot of work and I guess it's unnecessary, but citations are always cool or a section that includes the data referred to.

Also Therians believe they are the spirits of animals, traped in the body of a human. Other-kin are the same, but it the animals are mythical (e.g. dragons, elves, etc)

Last thing is that I thought it was weird that you spent the whole thing explaining why worries aren't weird, only to open one section with saying that furries are weird.

Peace

I think the whole thing was typed up to be read out loud, I wouldn't be too worried about the punctuation.

MrRazot, thanks for re-explaining the other-kin, I knew I was close, but I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong.  XP

Trying to not be too biased since I am a furry myself, so this is not weird to me but might be weird to others.
I didn't have much time as i hoped to do this, I'm literally having a friend that has actual essay skills compared to me try and fix some grammar. It's not because what I type is going into the article (though it might). It's to help give background information so to speak. Where I live, practically everyone i meet has no idea what a furry is. So I figured I should explain it from an outsiders point of view. I may have gone in and out of that perspective as i wrote this.

The information comes from about half a year ago when i wanted to know more about the furry community itself. I had been a furry for a while but since I'm not really social i never reached out to others. Its from a mix of surveys from various sites, blogs from peoples reports about their first con visits and even some independent journalist in San Jose who did survey work. It's been half a year. I have no idea how to get back to those things I have read after all this time. The only thing i could remember, source wise, was the video on youtube "Why do Furries Exist" which is where i got the six face syndrome info.

Also, ill change it. I didn't delve much into religious furs or therian so i know very little about them myself. I just wanted to mention them for anyone who did their own research so they don't jump to conclusions. Many people I have met can't give more than 5mins attention when googling and just accept whatever they see first.

All in all, I don't recall ever seeing official numbers on anything, so I'd keep numbers (like 10,000) to either very generic option or replace them entirely (a large number of people vs. 1,000).  That keeps you out from under the bus when it comes to "well, he said this, but THAT isn't true at all."

This i shall do.

Im off to try and put a good word in. I have annoying social anxieties so this paper will help me answer questions and some personal questions she wanted ask. Having the background info on furries was helpful since she admitted she did not know that much about it herself so this should help improve understanding.
Thanks for the help everyone!
