Not exactly scary, but I find it at least a little creepy...

The Stranger
The stranger came one summer afternoon. He approached me as I was getting my mail and said pleasantly, “Do you mind if we talk?” and so we did. I was not naturally given to conversation, but somehow I knew this time was different.

“There is something I don’t understand,” he said, at present.

“What’s that?” I asked. He wasn’t from around here; that much was clear. His accent was odd, not one I could place. He told me nothing of himself, only asked questions about things whose answers should have been obvious even to a foreigner.

He said to me, “I saw something earlier that perplexed me. It was strange. I could not make much sense of the reason behind it.”

I frowned slightly. His manner of speech was unlike any I was used to.

“Yeah? What did you see?”

“Some of the people here are strange. I saw two people, one a male and one a female. They sat close together on a bench under a tree. They had their arms around each other’s shoulders, and their heads touching as they smiled at each other. Why did they act in this way?”

His wide, bright gaze seared into my own. I stared back, and knew then that something was horribly wrong.

“Why – how come you’re asking that?”

“Please answer my question. I do not understand.”

“Where are you from?”

“Answer my question.”

"Because they were in love!"

"I still don't understand. What is love?"

“What are you?”

His eyes glowed as he took my hand. “Your world is so close to knowing exactly what I am,” he said, “and being afraid of it no longer. People like you who have not realized it yet are quite uncommon, in fact. I see much, but some things I still do not understand. Those who do not believe in and cannot understand these things either know what I am. Fear not – like them all, you will soon know, too.”

That was when I turned, pulled my hand from his hot grip, and ran up the driveway to my house. A moment later I looked back behind me, and saw nothing. He was gone.

He was gone, but I did not escape from him, for already as I opened the door I felt it beginning inside me. I felt the lawless waves of sorrow, and then confusion, and then anger. The stranger – strange no longer – had seized his hold upon what only moments before had been my heart; there he had come, and there he stayed, the one known as what had once to me been only a mere word – Hate.
