On the Playlist
« on: July 06, 2011, 05:32:40 AM »
So, a while back I started a story series of short one-shots on sofurry.com that I call "On the Playlist".  All the stories in the series are inspired by different songs, and I thought I'd post them here just for fun and a bit of critique.  I'll post the first one, and if people seem to like it, I'll post the second and eventually the third one that I just finished.  Worry not, gentle furries, all the stories in this series are yiff-free.

This first segment is inspired by the song "Summer Love" by Groove Coverage. It's a sad one, as some of these stories are bound to be. Lyrics to "Summer Love" here.... http://www.lyricspy.com/g/Groove_Coverage/lyrics/Summerlove/     Sadly, I couldn't find any videos featuring the song, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere if you look hard enough.
So.... Enjoy!

On The Playlist #1

Mark couldn't believe what he'd just seen. The leopard clenched his eyes shut, trying to keep from remembering the image: Sam, his boyfriend, with someone else, hugging and holding hands. The feline felt a tear run down his face, dampening his fur. How could Sam do this? They'd been together for almost two years, and Mark genuinely loved the coyote with all his heart. He'd thought Sam loved him, too, but...

The leopard slammed his fist down on the steering wheel of his car. He was parked on the beach, where he and Sam had first met. Through the open window, the feline could hear the waves as they crashed relentlessly against the sand. Normally, the sound brought to mind the long nights spent wrapped up in the arms of his lover, or of moonlit walks on the beach, but not now. Not now. The sound almost hurt, ringing around in Mark's head, forcing painful memories to the forefront of his mind. He took a deep breath, inhaling the tang of the salty sea air. It burned in his lungs, where it usually felt cool and soothing. Everything hurt.

Mark opened his eyes, looking out the windshield towards the horizon, where the sun was just beginning to set. The clouds burned orange and red, reflecting beautifully on the waves. But Mark saw nothing but Sam's shocked face when Mark saw them together, outside the movie theater.

Sam and the other person, a wolf, Mark thought, were hugging. They broke the embrace, and began walking down the sidewalk, holding hands and laughing. Sam looked up, and saw Mark standing on the curb, watching them. He gave the feline a surprised look, and then released the wolf's hand, as if hoping Mark hadn't noticed. Mark simply turned away, ignoring Sam's pleas for him to turn around, and had left the duo.

Mark's eyes welled up again, tears rolling down his face and falling into his lap. The feline reached down into his pocket and pulled out his pocket knife. He flipped the blade open and ran his finger along the blade. It was sharp, as always. Mark brought the blade down and rested it against his wrist. He took a deep breath. All he wanted was for Sam to be happy, and if it wasn't with him... Well, that was fine.

The leopard yanked the blade across his wrist, and gasped in pain as blood instantly welled up and began to drip into his lap. He leaned back against the seat, waiting. He could feel himself getting weaker, feel the world slowly slipping away. He looked to the side, out the window, to see Sam standing just outside the car. He was yelling something, and trying to grab Mark's bleeding wrist. The feline pulled away from him. As he faded, he could finally make out what Sam was trying to say.

"He was my cousin! He's retarded, Mark! I was trying to keep him from running into the street! I wasn't cheating!" Mark's cloudy mind registered what the coyote was saying, and his heart sank. Sam desperately tried to stop the blood, but it was too late. Mark closed his eyes.

"S-sorry... Sam..."

Sam sat in shock for a moment, then embraced his dead mate, the feline's blood staining his tan fur. Then, he reached down and took the knife from Mark's lifeless paw.

"Mark... you were always my Romeo... Now, I'm Juliet." With that, the coyote brought the blade down, his blood joining Mark's as he embraced the feline one last time.

As Sam slipped away, the radio played softly.

"In the past,
We used to be together.
Every day of our lives,
But now it's fading away."
