TFF's list of recommended TV shows!
« on: April 25, 2013, 09:19:40 AM »
There are a lot of furs who don't watch much TV anymore, mainly because TV is starting to be replaced by the internet. However, there are still some fantastic television shows all over the world, whether old, new, drama, documentary, action, cartoon, for kids, for adults it doesn't matter. There are precious gems in the TV world that should be explored by every person around! So I have made a challenge to all the people of TFF, lets make a list of all the best, greatest and timeless TV shows of the world in one place. Anyone who doesn't know what to watch next can come to our list and see some of the most spectacular spectacle of media entertainment the likes of which the furry fandom has yet seen!

Maybe a bit a dramatic, either way, my challenge to you is to post all your favourite TV shows that you would recommend to others. With each of these shows, I'd suggest post a brief description why it is good, I'll make a list on the main page with all the shows along with a small quote from your description that says the shows are very good! SO COME ON FURS LETS SHOW PEOPLE THAT TV IS INFACT NOT DEAD! (You can post as many shows as you want and if a show has already been posted, you can add your OWN quote to say why the show is really good, some really popular shows might have 4 quotes saying how it's incredible)

The list:

-Breaking Bad (WingedZephyr Recommended!)
"Great writing, even better acting, and great suspense too. It's a good show to watch with your friends, and if you really wanna be a jerk, make it so you only watch one or two episodes every couple of hours, especially on a cliffhanger x3." ~Nic

"Another amazing show that others pointed out. " ~Spike

-Doctor Who
"Classic British television brought up to date in a thrilling Sci-Fi Action Adventure set in just about every different time period possible." ~MrRazot

"The only good show on now." ~Nixon

"Each episode has you left wondering what'll happen next." ~Nic

Well, not only that, but the problem with the tv-shows here, is that it's very irregular. They would send out episode one, two and three of a series, then skip to season 2 and air the last episode, then go back to season one and continue, etc.
If it was possible to watch my shows on tv in the 'chronical' order, then I would do that :)

I would recommend:
Charmed,
Supernatural (it has humour, can be serious, shows off different kinds of 'supernatural' beings, can be sad/drama-ish and action :))
Dexter,
Kagi no Kakatta Heya  (if you like locked-room mysteries)
and perhaps some more later, but that's it for now :)

I would write more as a description why it's good, but I forgot them as soon as I started posting ^^;

Sherlock: Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson set in modern day London.
Doctor Who: Classic British television brought up to date in a thrilling Sci-Fi Action Adventure set in just about every different time period possible.
IT Crowd: The adventures of the IT department of Rennam Industries as they marvel in the idiocracy of the everyday computer user.
Inbetweeners (UK): Following a group of 16 year old boys as they try their best to get through school in an insane comedy that depicts the struggles of trying to get good marks while failing with their love-life and drinking under-age. I could not recommend this any more.

I only really watch sport and the occasional documentory, but I do watch Charlie Brooker. He does a show called Weekly Wipe where he takes a satirical look at events from the past week, leaving no prisoners with his sharp wit and excellent put downs.
This man speaks so much sense about how strange society really is!

He has also done shows about video games which might interest some members here.

King of the Hill - Not something that everyone will like, and sometimes it takes a few episodes to get "into" it, but this cartoon is one of the funniest things I've ever watched. It's not full of cheap jokes or gags, but is just genuinely funny because of the quirks and personalities of the characters themselves. It was cancelled years ago, but had a full 13-season run. I've re-watched the entire show about three times since it was cancelled and I still love it.

Dexter - More for adult/mature audiences, it's my most favorite TV show ever. If you haven't seen it before, it's about the life of the main character, Dexter, who works in forensics by day and is a serial killer by night. Dexter does some pretty bad stuff when you think about it, but instead you find yourself rooting for him throughout the show. Incredibly suspenseful, dark, funny, and thoughtful. The final season (season 8) will be running this June.

Breaking Bad - Another one made for adult/mature audiences, it has a similar overall theme as Dexter. It focuses on a middle-aged man who is diagnosed with cancer and falls into drug dealing to secure the financial future of his family, and all the dangerous "adventures" that follow. :P

The Big Bang Theory - I've heard some people hate on this show, but I don't really understand the hate unless you're taking the show way too seriously. It's one of the best sitcoms I've ever seen and always makes me laugh.

How I Met Your Mother - The thing about this show is that I personally think it is only best watched with all episodes altogether in chronological order. It is possible to watch an episode here or there, or out of order, and still enjoy it, but I think you end up missing out on at least 30% of what makes this show great if you do. The show has long, overarching storylines that play out through the show, and they frequently references events from previous episodes that you would never quite understand if you didn't watch them. If you do go to the trouble of watching the entire thing in order though, I've found it to be really clever, rewarding, and enjoyable.

I have a few other shows I enjoy as well for different reasons, but those are at the top of my list.

I've gotta put Breaking Bad on here just because it's one of the best shows I've watched in ages.  Great writing, even better acting, and great suspense too. It's a good show to watch with your friends, and if you really wanna be a jerk, make it so you only watch one or two episodes every couple of hours, especially on a cliffhanger x3.

Same can be said about the show Damages. It's a law-drama show that also has great acting, the first season is the best in terms of story, each episode has you left wondering what'll happen next.

Dunno if animated really counts, but Avatar the Last Airbender was an excellent TV series! Fun and well-developed characters in a really neat Asian influenced world. The first season takes a little bit to get into, but once it gets going things get really interesting. At times the show explores some deeper themes that can be insightful and eye opening, but it never takes itself too seriously either. Sadly it's rarely aired now so your best bet to see it is on netflix, but at least all of the episodes are on there!

Murdock Mysteries, hands down. At least the earlier seasons before the love drama starts (though doesn't that happen to every TV series ever?)
M.M.K.B. Part 1.
Here's part one of an episode I like especially, named The Kissing Bandit.

Not only is it clever and fun, but also includes a lot if fun tropes such as inventing things before their time (such as the sonar). They also touch subjects that are interesting to their time setting, such as birth control and how to handle different mental disorders such as autism. The characters are fun, actors brilliant, the comedic relief is funny and not too cheesy (which is why I hate most TV series in general) and the episodes are highly varied.

Here's what I'm currently watching/hooked onto:

Boardwalk Empire: A mature drama series produced by Mark Whalberg starring Steve Buscemi following the life of Nucky Thompson, a gangster and politician who struggles to balance his life between his wife, business, and growing illegal liquor empire during the prohibition era in the 1920's. This show is kinda slow but extremely violent. The writing is great and the character roles are really neat but also quick to develop.

Breaking Bad: Another amazing show that others pointed out.

Bates Motel: A spin-off series of the 1960's cult horror movie, "Psycho," following young Norman Bates and his murderous single mom Norma as they open their own motel in an even more sinister town. A cool show but also kinda weird to watch. The relationships shared between characters in this show are outlandish but also what drives the plot.

House of Cards: A mature drama series following the life of a corrupt South Carolina Democrat played by Kevin Spacey, who is appointed to Secretary of State and exacts revenge on those who betrayed and belittled him during his time as Congressman. A really cool show to watch even if you hate politics like me.

Sons of Anarchy: Another mature drama series following an outlaw biker gang in Southern California. The main character Jax, is the expected president of his dead father's legacy club, but tensions between fellow members and the agenda of the gang's business is quickly caught up in the law, rival gangs over drugs and guns, and his desire to be the good father of his new-born child.

I'm a huge fan of crime and mystery series. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Me? I'd recommend Firefly because, even though I've only seen a few episodes, I'm absoultely in love with it. It has suspense, comedy, fantastic characters, an awesome plot. Overall, one of the best shows I've seen. Also, The Big Bang Theory, because...it's just amazing. It's intelligent comedy that's really funny. Also Once Upon A Time. It's a great show, with compelling characters, great story and story telling. Just a great show. Finally, Glee. It's good because it's not all about singing, but the songs they sing are cool, and the character make you feel for them LOVE IT!

"Normal" is a word for something that doesn't exisit. It was created by those who don't challenge the status quo, and don't aspire to greatness.
Happiness is the way the Universe rewards those who face the hardships in their lives head on, with determination in their hearts.
Love is what binds us all together, what keeps us sane, makes us insane, holds the world and Universe together.
In my mind, it doesn't matter where you are going, where you've been, where you are, nor even the journey you're on. What matters is that you keep moving, no matter where you're going, where you've been, and where you are. Just keep moving.

I made the list, just so people know about ordering it goes like this. Things with more "points" go on top, while things with less points go on bottom, if things have the same amount of points they stay in alphabetical order XD

A quote is one point, while a recommendation without a quote is half a point, a lot of people may be wondering why their lists were only seen as a recommendation rather than a quote, and because usually people say a synopsis (which is fine XD) But generally quotes are supposed to say "it's amazing" and stuff like that :P

Either way! Keep it coming guys, the list looks pretty good so far :3

I have a few more now I think about it, classics!

Blackadder: An absolutely brilliant sit-com with every season set in a different time period. Basically, every season was about Edmund Blackadder and his dogsbody Baldrick (quite possibly Sod-Off Baldrick, as that's what the other children seemed to call him) trying to get the best of their superiors. Personally I think the 4th season, Blackadder goes forth, was the best simply for Steven Fry's role as General Melchet. Bahhhhhhh!

Porridge: Another sit-com, this time set in a prison in the north of England and revolves around the prisoner, Norman Stanley Fletcher, and a small group of minor characters just trying to pass time and get by with as little hassle as possible. It's an awesome old style comedy and probably Ronnie Barker's best role in acting.
