Yet another moral dilemma
« on: December 21, 2009, 03:23:05 AM »
Ok so my parents are changing my little brothers' last names to our stepfather's last name, and they asked if I wanted to change mine. Now don't get me wrong I absolutely cannot stand my real father, but I am now the last one to carry on the family name. If I change mine, well, it dies. I don't want to be the reason our name died, but I also don't want to give the impression that I still tolerate my father. Help....please.
RIP Patchy 08/96 - 29/01/10

caring on a name in a family line is VERY important. even if you do hate your real father if you switch your last name to your step fathers you'll be dishonoring every single person in your real fathers family tree.
so my advice is carry on your real fathers family name not for him but for all your ancestors in that line.
The dragon takes flight,Flight across the plains
Plains he is shunned from,From all manner of creature comfort

The dragon grows weary,Weary from loneliness,
Loneliness that he has been engulfed in,
In a maelstrom of despair

The dragon is ready,Ready to give up hope
Hope for any sort of life,Life that one might enjoy

The dragon approaches,Approaches a small village
A village that accepts him,Him, who was shunned by all other places

The dragon has found a home,A home to laugh and grow
Grow and laugh and love,Love his new life

The dragon is home

That's a little harsh in my opinion seems we know so little about your real father. I don't think you should worry about it too much, you should definitely just go ahead and explain how you feel to your mom and step dad if you can jerk up the confidence, discuss it with them, come to a decision together perhaps though of course they may be a little biased.

OK mate you need to ask yourself which is more important ,the dislike of your father or a chance to bring honor to your current last name....just something to think about.

I say you should keep it. In my opinion, it's who you are. Your name has stuck with your family for a long time and I think that's important. My real family name died near the end of WWII so my grandparents could escape Germany. I honestly hate my last name...it feels really fake to me. My brother got a tattoo of my family's old name on his back because he felt the same way.

But it's all down to you. Personally, I think you should keep it.
