Baby Rabbits in Danger!
« on: July 24, 2010, 07:10:00 AM »
I posted this in the random topic too so I have a better chance of getting an answer quickly.

There are some newborn rabbits in my backyard, and there is this crazy thunderstorm with lightning and tons of rain flooding the area. The mother rabbit didn't pick the best location for the nest because they are at the bottom of an incline and it's flooding fast! My dad and I checked them, and most of them have their heads barely out of the water.

I know nature should take its course, but it's hard to leave them out there to drown. Should I help them or leave them be? I've already checked how to handle wild rabbits, and I understand what to do until they're ready to be released. But I'm not sure if I should just let them survive the storm on their own or not.

Best fit here since you're looking for advice.

FYI if you touch the babies the mother will not return. With that said, it's really up to your discretion. Are you willing to do what you have to to make sure they survive? Can you deal if you take them in and they don't? All in all I'd say just keep checking on them, the mother rabbit might move them as long as your scent is not on them. Um you could always try to figure a way to block the water from entering their nest, like re-rout the water some where else... I dunno....

Don't pick them up. I know its hard to sit and do nothing for them, but would you be able to take care of them in a way that you could teach them what's necessary to survive and release them back into the wild? If you can, then go get em, but if not...

I didn't save them, but don't worry. They all survived the storm! Their mother is still around too, so they're safe. ^w^
