Buy a head base or make one
« on: September 24, 2017, 07:40:39 PM »
I am thinking about making a fursuit, and I am making a list of things to buy for it. Should I buy a foam head blank or make my own?

I mean, that really depends why you want to buy a foam base, is it time or doesn't it matter how long you work on a project?
If it doesn't matter, but money might be tight, then I would opt to make it yourself.
It's really easy to do and you can implement your own style much better than when using an already existing base.
So in the end it comes down to what do you want, and are there any limiting factors?

As far as I know, this would be a personal project with no limiting factors.

Then I would say do whatever you prefer! :)
It;s hard for me to judge what you would prefer, and thus which option you would take. So I can only speak for myself to say: If money isn't an issue, nor time, then I would still make my own. The character's head would then be more "mine" than if I would use someone else's base. (And I can't stand if it's not "all mine" if I got all the time in the world, if that makes sense :P)

If nothing else you could try and if it just wasn't going the way you wanted you could always buy something.

Building fursuits isn't the easiest thing when you don't have any experience. There are a lot of good tutorials, but there are also a lot that are misleading and not practical.

If you wanted to try your luck, the easiest way I think is just buying some foam and start carving/gluing pieces together to see if you can get the shapes you want. You could even build a head base from your head (tutorials available for it - again good and bad out there) and then start adding/trimming the face to see if you can get the look you want. The biggest factors will be how determined are you to make something that you like and having the will to achieve it. If you aren't planning doing more in the future or you just want a certain look a maker already has, buying a resin mask or foam head base may be the way to go unless you can afford a partial or something.
