character and location ideas please
« on: June 28, 2010, 06:37:12 AM »
id've kept this going on my other topic, but the title wouldnt help much. okay so Im writing a story about a guy whos a real charlie brown, ya know? black sheep of the family, not hated, but not really liked either, dead end job, the works. but he has a cat, whom he loves, and he gets to thinking about trying to change himself into a cat so he can be with his cat like mates. so he develops a virus that changes him into a cat, but it back fires and hes now part cat, part human. problem is that every time I come up with names and places, its from video games or movies and I think theyre stupid. so I need you guys to give me names and such so I dont think theyre stupid. heres a list of names i need.

1 name for hero's home town
1 name for laboratoy where virus is made
1 name for scientist friend who feels sorry for hero
couple names for co-workers
1 name for female news anchor

thats all for now, ill update when ive come up with more or chosen some. thanks every one. oh by the way, hes not a furry at the beginning, he just doesnt know about us  :P

Alrighty then:

Home town should be based in the culture that surrounds them. Is it a US city? then base it on US names. Jamestown, Richburgh, things like that, or just take from other countries like the US has, like Birmingham or London or things like that. If it isn't a US city then go for what culture surrounds them, base it on the surrounding area and towns that are nearby.

Labs are named after people (founders or famous scientists), after events or are just named with numbers and letters.

Scientist friend is weird if he thinks that helping this person in this insane scheme is a good thing to do, but hey, names are the hardest thing in the world. THink of his background and his culture, then base a name off of that. Don't be afraid to change it sometime later, nothing is permanent until it's all finished.
The same applies to coworkers and the news anchor.

Everything is based on the world.

And remember, names are the hardest bit and can always be changed later.
"Parents always think kids are wasting their youth, and always have done [so] down through the millennia," says Tom Forsyth of RAD Game Tools. "'That Ug, always holding things. His front paws will develop in funny ways. Why can't he walk on all fours like normal proto-hominids?' And so, whatever the kids spend the most time doing, that's always what parents think is a waste of time, and what is corrupting their lives. It doesn't matter what that is. If all they did was homework, parents would be worrying that their kids aren't becoming well-rounded people. And, in fact, parents do this - enrolling math nerds in karate classes and the like. There is no way to win - parental paranoia ensures that kids are always doing the wrong thing."

ok so i scrapped the friendly scientist idea and instead went with this, he still works as janitor for furgasen labs (subtle joke  :P), and he over hears them creating a virus which would alter bone mass to cure osteoperosis. hes got 1 1/2 years of bio engineering from college (dropped out due to parents death in a plane crash). he figures he can steal the virus, alter it in his apartment, and make himself into a cat with it. hows that sound? remember this is fiction.

It's fine to have psuedoscience that makes no sense. Some of the biggest names do it all the time. Just as long as paper over it with believable characters and settings.

But yeah this works. Now all you have to do is actually write the thing.
