Rush
« on: March 22, 2010, 01:02:24 AM »
If I were to ever endorse anyone or anything, it would have to be the band Rush. Just how brilliantly written their songs are puts me in a state of pure mesmerism.

This band could not, nor would not perform without all members (Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Pert). All of them have essential parts to the songs that they sculpt. I'll run down the talents of each individual person.

Geddy Lee: Bassist, Rhythm guitarist, Vocals and keyboarding/effects. This man has been blessed with remarkable talents; he can multitask in some of the most impressive ways, for instance: While he is singing, he can pull of an extremely difficult bass riff or even solo (Though it wouldn't be much of a solo if he's singing and the rest of the band is still playing), but it is still at the level of technicality and difficulty. The same thing can go for keyboarding and singing, playing guitar and singing, and whatever multitasking may apply. Also, his voice is just REMARKABLE! (In his early tracks, you may thing that he was performing with his sack of joy being strangled, because he can sing very high) It's not only the fact that his voice is beautiful, but that it is in harmony with the very band itself, as if he's guiding the sound of the song. Whether it be the melancholy of a loved one's death, or a joyous spring of enthusiasm coming from a stalwart youth, desperate to see lands afar, Geddy Lee can make the vocals fit perfectly.

Alex Lifeson: Lead Guitarist. We all know that lead guitarist of the band inspires all his listeners to become rock stars, and that can still be the case here. No, it's not because Alex is some type of super testosterone pumped, Harley Davidson driving manly man. It's because he's just so talented (Then again, everyone in this band is). The riffs that he plays are wondrous, complex and...well, brilliant! His solos, are also something to be smiled upon, and even embraced as the most awesome thing you've ever heard. He has used many different playing styles, so you can probably find the songs that you like the most. Personally, I like his work from the 70s to 80s the best, but that's beside the point. I'm NOT saying that he's better than all the other artists, but he should certainly rank up in the top 5 or 10. He's the best I'VE heard, but maybe I'm not up to date on these things.

Neil Pert: Lyrics, Drums and miscellaneous percussion. This man is the body of the band, with his drums beating like the heart and his lyrics as the mind and soul. Now, rather than me describing his lyrics, I'll just quote one of his songs:

"What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It's got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?

See how it sings like a sad heart
And joyously screams out it's pain
Sounds that build high like a mountain
Or notes that fall gently like rain

I can't wait to share this new wonder
The people will all see it's light
Let them all make their own music
The Priests praise my name on this night"

~Neil Pert, 2112, part 3: Discovery

Honestly, I am far too dumbstruck to even explain my love for his lyrics. His writing is astoundingly beautiful, and magical that no words in my human vocabulary could describe. The same would go for his drumming technique, and let me tell you, I am completely sure that Neil is THE BEST drummer. He got the award of best drummer three times in a row in the drummies, and could possibly win another one. His playing is fast, but not the fastest, yet since when did that make you better? The pieces that he makes are impossible to beat, for they're just so complex (Count the number of times I have used that word) that nobody could match them. Listen to his 8 MINUTE drum solo to see what I mean.

So, that concludes my very long rant about how Rush is so great, and how you should listen to them, and blah blah blah. You get my point, so just take a look at their songs.

Well, since my father got me into Rush, I usually get the albums from him. As of now, I have 2112, Moving pictures, exit stage left (One of their live performances in the early 80s, on both record and DVD), Fly By Night (On record), Farewell to Kings, Grace Under Pressure, and a greatest hits CD. The rest of the songs that I know I looked up on Rush websites. The ones I want are Permanent Waves, Snakes and Arrows, and their 40th anniversary CD.

My FAVORITE song by them would either be: Natural Science, The Fountain of Lamneth, Countdown, Xanadu, 2112 or Limbo. It all depends on my mood, environment and time-of-day.

YYZ live at Rio is an example of superior artistic talent in Rush as well as The Spirit of Radio and Limelight. Lifeson plays guitar to a level that even Slash envies - complex, varying with finger work that has been perfected over some number of decades. Geddy Lee is, really just something else. Keeping up with him is no easy task, his bass lines are, very much deservingly, award winning with so much heart put into each and every one - and his singing doesn't fall short. He hits high notes that take music to a whole new level. Then we have Peart - better known as God. His drumming is not only out of this world, but he just plays in a way that really highlights how impressive percussion can be.

I wish I had been born 30 years earlier just to live through Rush's best years, I missed out on even their 80s run sadly.

When I was in highschool, I did a report about Neil Pert. Very interesting background he has.
