Line art help
« on: May 25, 2011, 03:09:01 PM »
As title says, I need help putting down the line art. I don't know why but I have such a hard problem putting down sufficient line art, its either too big, too small, doesn't flow, or just looks all kinds of wrong.

I understand every one is diffrent, but any advice would be great :/

well with starting out with the pencil line art, its ALL about the light gentle strokes..

when first drawing with pencil, you get the benefit of easy to erase lines, you sketch out your basic shapes, and really just a rough idea of what you want. then you go back through and add a little more detail..still keeping a fairly light pencil line, put in details, eyes, fur textures ect.  then take your eraser and careful take away the soft lines that you didnt want. but dont get to crazy with the eraser..you dont want to ruin the lines you DID want. then when you think you REALLY got it..go over your lines that you DO like with the pencil with a harder line. so the lines you really want stand out, and the sketch parts show themselves. so you can erase even more of the unwanted lines.

and for inking, i recommend having at least 2 different ink pens...of different sizes. me, i use a Uni-ball pen for my thicker lines..its basically your average ink pen; and a Micron 0.25 line width for my thinner lines. for your larger pen..get whats comfortable, something that flows free and the line doesnt start and stop..but nothing thats gonna leave dribble and cause you to smear your precious art.

for the thinner pen..ink in those LIL details..such as eyes, claws, lines on the fur that indicate fluffiness, small details and whatever else you deem to need a delicate touch. now take that larger pen and just go on through and ink the rest of the lines.

and now that your all done...wait for it to dry so you dont smear....

now go through with one of them fat erasers and clear out ALL the pencil lines.
and there you have it..pertyful line art

Thanks, I always wondered that. But I was talking about digital, but I wouldn't mind knowing how to do it traditionally so thanks still.
