Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die
« on: June 14, 2011, 04:05:17 AM »
If you don't know Pratchett then you probably don't know the fantasy novel series called "The Discworld". It's a shame, they're great books and some of my favourites.

But here's the deal: dearest Terry has Alzheimer's disease. A year ago he could only sign books with his name and now he can only write with a voice recognition software or an assistant. He has requested assisted suicide at the Swiss euthanasia clinic, all that remains is to sign the papers. He said himself that the only thing that kept him from doing so, was that he "wanted to see his film and he had a damned book to finish". Might I add that the book that he is writing now was not supposed to be the last in the series...

Anyway, the film BBC made was named "Choosing to Die" and it aired this Monday.
This here article might prove interesting if you want to know more about it.

My bottom line is; does anyone else feel heavy at heart by reading this? Will any of you miss him like I will? And, would you rather he signed the papers or not?

I would be sad to see him go. I love his books and plan to get them all. But I feel that people should respect his choice, I know that he has supported assisted suicide for many years now, and I feel that if a person has had enough and truly wants to die. Who are we to stop them? I think it takes a great deal of courage to walk to one's own grave.

He will be missed, but at least he will be happy.

I hope you will remember me, At least say so to comfort me, You say goodbye so easily, Its now or never, It may seem really pitiful, But life became too beautiful, The pain of love unbearable, It's now or never, Gone Forever.

I share your opinion. It's very sad to see him go but I'd rather know that he died when he felt it was his time, than know he's been suffering for years without being able to ask for help.

I can go as far as to say it seems a bit selfish to deny him that, just because we like his work.
