Moral Contingencies
« on: October 22, 2011, 05:32:28 AM »
A story idea I just came up with today, let me know if you think I should continue with it and ill post more.

Background: The year is 2225...Bio engineering has developed advanced life forms of human+animal hybrids. These scientific methods are frowned upon highly by religions. They are able to breed and make judgements, and share the intelligence of normal humans. Horrific experiments are being to held to determine wether or not they possess morality proper for normal civilization. They are completely unaware of their setting or of the outside world and what it offers.

The tele-screen in the small, dark room flicked on, emitting nothing but static. The blank fuzzy monitor illuminated the room, catching the attention of six very frightened faces. Looking around they were finally able to see each other; no one was recognized by anyone. A few of them calm, some of them shaking, and one of them crying.
"Someone please shut her up…" The wolf said disdained. No one said anything, but looked over at her concerned.
No one knew where they were. They seemed to be trapped inside a cement room with no air vents, food, or water. It was only a matter of time before they suffocated or starved to death.
The lion got up and fixed his shirt, then proceeded over to the screen to examine it.
"Theres no buttons or controls…" He said feeling around the piece of glass. He squinted his eyes hard, used to the darkness and sensitive to the bright screen.
The tiger got to his feet next to comfort the deer, who was sobbing into her sleeve against the wall.
"Hey," He said sympathetically. "We need to conserve our oxygen…can you calm down and help us do that? We need to work together." The deer sniffled and tried to stop breathing so hard. She nodded at the tiger as and then hugged him for comfort. The wolf laid back and sighed, relieved for a moment of silence. The tiger looked down at the wolf as he patted the deer's back.
"He's right, we need to start finding a way out of here, but we need to stay calm otherwise we will lose more air." The gazelle said, who was drumming on her knees in boredom. She brushed her blond hair out of her eyes as she looked up at the others.
The bear, wearing a tank top and shorts showing off his powerful limbs, got up to assist the lion with the monitor.
"Doesn't look like we can do anything with it." The bear said after giving it a look over.
Suddenly the tele-screen flashed bright, blinding everyone in the room. It dimmed down and the static noise stopped, leaving a dim grey color that was projected to the frightened group. The lion and bear stepped back for the others to see too. There was no image broadcasted, but instead a distinct voice with a rather heavy and intelligent sounding english accent.
"Please try not to panic. It will take teamwork for you six to survive. You have 34 hours before you all suffer from extreme carbon dioxide poisoning. This entire ordeal will be over before any of you require food or water. All you have to do is survive."
The group looked at each other and swallowed nervously, the wolf finally deciding to stand up.
"I will display on this screen the poisonous gas levels that you are all producing right now, and also the amount of time you have left before you slip into comas, ultimately leading to your deaths. Theres a twist, however…" The voice continued. "One person may be selected for sacrifice. They will be killed, but in return will grant the group 4 more hours of healthy, breathable oxygen."
The screen flickered again, displaying a green and red bar that read "oxygen" in the green section, and "CO2" in the red section. Above this bar there was a digital clock set exactly with 34:00:00. It started to run backwards and the bar slowly started to drain of it's green color.
"I will check on you again in thirty three hours." The voice said. "Good luck, and do not disappoint me."
They all looked at each other as the screen returned back to static, then eventually turned off completely, leaving pitch blackness once again.
There was absolute silence, interrupted by the sound of nervous individuals swallowing.
