HOW TO: Purring & Growling
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:34:25 PM »
I dont know if this subject has been covered before, but I have been recieving a lot of questions about how to purr lately because of my constant purring in public.

Learning to purr isnt difficult but some people havent developed the muscles in their mouth to do it so, I'm going to start at the beginning.

Learning to Purr/Growl;

Step 1. Get a glass of water & gargle
Step 2. Try gargling without the water

When I purr my teeth are apart, but when I close my teeth it becomes a growl.

Don't worry if it doesnt sound good at first, anyone who is reading this from me telling them to go here or if you have heard me, I discovered this when I was 6 years old & have been doing it for a very long time.

That's quite nice and simple :3
It's about the way I do it, I can add that when I do it I also breathe outwards slightly different to get the differences in sounding between the two, also I am much better at growling than purring X3

Well, basically for the growl I breathe outwards to gargle much harder and open my mouth quite wide, trying to mimic a the expression of a growling dog.
Unlike you, I however either have my teeth wide open, mostly to expose my sharp and fearous fangs, or I semi-close them, pushing my tongue against the top of my muzzle :3

For the purr I close my eyes and gargle very softly, nodding my head down but raising it upwards during the purr, yet being a fox and not a cat, it's not that common for me to purr :P

If anyone is interested in barking I can also recommend these videos:
It's quite well explained and she does examples of it herself. It did help me improve my skills at least :3

@timmy fox  Nice addition to the guide. Most foxes do purr its not just a cat thing.

I also wanted to add DON'T TRY TO DO THIS WITH A DRY MOUTH!

Its difficult to do when your throat is all dried up & makes it almost impossible to learn if you can't purr already.

Some people just have a talent for voice distortion, although it can be learned. Rather than go straight for the specific effect you're looking for, try a vriety of different sounds before you specialise. "singing" music is a good exercise, particularly electronic music, because it incorporates a wide range of tones and flavours of tones.

Also, syrupy drinks help.

To purr: I roll the tip of my tongue on my top lip.
To growl: I do the gargle thing, without any liquid.
