a wild steam console appears !!
« on: April 28, 2012, 04:54:17 PM »
Valve is now valued at over 3 billion dollars it is suggested that with that amount of money they could take a risk of creating a games console.

Could we have hardcore nintendo's natural successors here?

could hl3 be its debut title

I can't say how many times I've heard about this.

As much as Valves next "logical" step would be to make a Steam Box, there's almost no real point to it. Ever since they opened up the ability for Steam Users to use PS3's for Steam games, I don't see any reason someone would want to buy a brand new console that will *only* play Steam approved games. Especially since it probably would only be a Download Only console, and since more then 3/4ths of Steam users tend to prefer using a keyboard and mouse over a controller.

Not to mention, I'm sure gamers would rather Valve make, I don't know, games rather then a new console. If HL3 isn't going to come out until a Steam Box does, then we may as well just wait until we all have kids/grandkids.

I really don't anticipate Valve putting out a console. Steam's "console" as it were is the PC, and that's where their loyal consumers lie. Heck, I don't even have a GOOD PC and I use Steam for whatever indie games my little netbook will run.

I'm also super confused about your comment on "Nintendo's natural hardcore successor". Valve and Nintendo are nothing alike and have absolutely nothing in common.

Personally, my preference is that Valve continues to focus on putting on good games and running Steam as it is. And continuing to improve the platform it already has. Steam is already sort of on the front line of where gaming is going - digital. I'm not sure why Valve would think it would be valuable to them at all to produce a "Steam Box".

Yeah, this part got me too. Not to mention, Nintendo already said they're going to try to open up more to the "hardcore gamer" with the Wii U. From the look of the release titles for it that I've seen thus far, that might actually come true =X

yes i heard about the fact the ps3 was all they need in a magazine but who knows Gabe originally said the ps3 was a miserable failure so it could go either way.

Would be cool, but I'm sticking to mouse and keyboard.
Even if it was keyboard compatible I wouldn't.

Not to mention, if it's an all out "Steam Box," that's a *lot* of titles that you can get elsewhere and on other consoles, that aren't even owned by Valve. Not to mention all the third-party games, too. I'd be really concerned for the amount of HDD space =I

I have to say, i realy enjoy the idea of a steam console, i mean there is so many games that i would love to be able to play somewhere else then my home, and that include the games that i have on steam.

I think we should also realize how competent Valve has always been, they know how to make good games. So I'm also going to hope that this steam box is something that basically resembles OnLive, which would essentially be an instant victory with the massive library of games.

But unless Valve is "lying" here: http://m.computerandvideogames.com/339280/valve-denies-steam-box-console-rumours/

The steam box is not going to ever be a console, it's just a Valve development kit.

I dislike the idea of having a steam console.
I think consoles generally limit the graphical capabilities of the actual games themselves, and then valve will have to make games that are limited by their own consoles processing power. Which pretty much means, valve will stop making games for the highest end of computers. Though, truth be told, they don't do that much anyway. Also, Valve has kind of always been about allowing gamers to modify their games, A console could limit that. Also, one last thing, is that it's harder to social network on a console.

I'm not exactly keen on a steam console xD
