I'm starting a new forum for furs in my state but right now it looks rather generic does anyone know any ways to make it look more furry oriented

Depends on what customization you CAN do. There isn't much you can do with free forum hosting, paid is better, then there are other things I can't remember because it is 7am on a Friday. I do know that enough is customizable on a free one to make it look almost not generic, with the right colors/art/theme.
