Friends reactions and perceptions

So after recently joining the fandom I decided I want to talk about it with some face to face. I questioned this at first as I thought none of them would understand and a simple Google search would turn them on me. But mostly it's been positive, I've found a couple of friends are furries already and that 2 of them understood but one has no idea what it was, which when explaining can come out wrong.


I've finished school but if I had ever revealed it there it would be instant social death, as my old school can be a bit rough, and everyone is trying to find something to make fun of for what they think is 'banter'.


But I'm glad I've told the right people and one is even going to teach me to draw fursona's, which is pretty awesome.


Question is how did your friends react when you told them and how did it change their perspective of you? Did you have to explain it or did they know what furry fandom was anyway?

My schoolmates might seem callous at first, but considering the general tolerance for others found in even the most unlikely people, being a furry is pretty unremarkable as long as you don't shove it in people's faces. A few friends of mine asked me "Are you a furry?" during a random lull in my useless computer class, to which I simply said "Yep" with a curt nod. They said "okay" and we continued talking about random stuff and watching each other fail at CS:GO. Nobody I know is a furry, but I don't really care, and they do not care if I am a furry.

(PS: I would ask a mod to move this to General Discussion. Would get much more attention there.)

Will do, most of my friends are not the type of people that would know or relate to furries, as they are your 'i can beat up anyone and I'm tough' sort of guys. So I decided to tell some of my friends as I like to be quite open about things, but only the friends who are also more open to any conversation.

Being a furry let's me talk to people outside my usual friendship group and I like the art, is what I usually say, and that I draw Anthro art.

Thanks for the advice, I'll get the conversation moved to the general part of the forum.

I'm seeing a pattern with you seeming to think that the whole world has to be made aware that you're a furry. Don't make it weird. In the other post i used the shoe analogy. Do you go around telling people what your shoe size is? People don't care. And they don't need to know. Don't be secretive about it, but dont rub it in peoples' faces either. That makes it seem like it's some taboo thing and honestly makes us look bad.

I can see what you mean lol. Was just wanting to talk about the style of art with friends and so fourth, obviously you always get that one friend who finds something and assumes it's something else. Trust me I had to convince a friend an average picture of a wolf furry was not 'hentai' as he ran about screaming and laughing 'hes got hentai on his phone'. That did not put me in a good mood. Reason being is most of my friends spot the pictures on my phone and say 'wgats this'? I then have to explain which is a pain lol.

Glad I can now explain it though rather than letting them Google it, which as we all know, doesn't always come up with the best results.

Tell whoever you want if that's what you like, but I would suggest only telling people who won't spread crap about you. Tell your close friends, maybe even your parents if you really feel inclined to. But as with any other personal details, don't make it wierd.

Also, if someone sees a decent illustration thag just happens to be furry, just say it's art, or furry art, or Illuminati if you please.

No i tend not to tell anything to the people who can rip the piss out of you based on anything. Seeming as I've left school now I only really talk to my closet friends, means I dint get prejudice anymore like I used to get at school, which was hard to deal with as usually ended up with me hitting that person. Not the best.

Same thing happened to me many years ago and from now on I always keep my phone locked.

People who swipe through orhers' phones are garbage. Like, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? HUH? You are violating the code we all follow which is that we respect eachothers' privacy. If you are going to swipe my shit, then you aren't my friend anymore because that's rude as hell.

This is also no. 1 reason of having all admin accounts locked with a password using Windows' user manager.
And you don't need to tell me it's not reliable, but at least it scares off people who don't know how to take it down.
