--They fell only to Rise--
Journal Entry-XXIV, 8/27/2035
The world is in ruin. War has ravaged the land and turned it into a barren landscape. Those no longer in this world have left behind remnants of their past life in the form of bullet casings and mortar rounds. During the Final Battle, as they dubbed it, chemical warfare and bio-hazards were legalized. Effectively, this marked the end of an era. Our era. Thanks to experiment Aesir-X5 the fallen have risen again; an unprecedented side effect the bio-weapon caused. The Risen have been noted to be extremely hostile and attack without provocation. We managed to capture and contain some of the reanimated. We have gained intel that the Risen are unresponsive to most basic stimuli except for the need to consume. If they do not consume organic material they combust from the inside it seems; Thrashing violently before exploding in a cloud of flesh and blood. Those exposed to the explosion have died a few days later and have reanimated in a similar fashion to those exposed to the Aesir-X5 compound or those killed by one of the Risen. There have been no survivors who have been bitten or otherwise wounded by the Risen. The most effective ways to kill the common forms of the Risen are to sever the spinal cord at the base of the skull and/or extreme trauma to the brain. Risen who have been wounded anywhere else have expressed no signs of pain but seem to be only enraged by harm to the body. Today we are going to test the abilities of a new form of Risen that has manifested itself in containment: Subject-12
End of log.
*******************
*Calixso zips his bag closed*
“Alright. It seems like this is all this place has to offer.”
*Calixso places his Desert eagle back into its holster before turning abruptly, inadvertently kicking the rotting corpse at his feet.*
*Luna comes up behind him, two fully stocked bags containing anything that may be of use that’s not too heavy in her bag and sighs, ears twitching*
"Ready to move on?"
“Yes… It’s a shame, *strokes the fur of his chin* Just that the world had to come to this.” *He adjusts his vest as he throws the bag onto his shoulder* “Let’s go.”
*Luna double checks the exterior before running down her checklist of survival items: several weapons, a compound bow, her m9, and her survival blade and makes sure there’s no movement within her vision, tail swaying she gives the ‘All Clear*
*Calixso nods briefly before cautiously exiting the building. Luna covering his flank*
“Alright, we’re out in the open now. We have to be extra careful as now all types can see us. Keep on your pads. The safehouse is about 2 kilometers from our current position. As long as we keep moving we should be safe.”
*Luna pads quietly. Her ears constantly twitch to try to pick out detect any sound that could be of significance, which is just about everything these days. Keeping her compound out in hand; a silent killer best kept under cover*
The wind blows lightly as they trek across the dusty terrain following the road to their destination. Before long, the wind dies down creating an ominous quiet.
*Moving along, Calixso’s eyes sweep back and forth to spot any movement other than our own. The two approach what appears to be the downtown area of the region. Tall buildings standing firm and presenting a reminder of what else mankind has left behind.*
“Through there would be the quickest route for us to take. What are your thoughts?”
*Luna shakes her head instantly and emits a barely audible whisper*
"Too many hiding places. There may be many resources but it's not guaranteed chance. If we are out in the open, we can see them. If we are here, they could be anywhere, we can hide in the city sure, but... I just dont think its good idea."
*Luna looks at him*
“Hm… good points. Around we go. Let’s hurry it up before it gets dark.”
*Quickening his pace, he beckons with the underside of his paw behind himself for her to keep up so they don’t get separated.*
*Luna flattens her ears down following close behind him, tail low, hears something running and turns her head around to see. She isn’t sure what it actually is but doesn’t risk approaching it. Instead pays close attention to it as we run by, eyes and ears trained on the forging creature. She prods him with her paw to get his attention not sure if he saw it.*
*Calixso turns*
“Yes?”
*Calixso looks behind them in the direction she indicates but sees nothing*
“What was-”
*Just then the wind picks back up. Kicking the dust up into the air thus creating a thick cloud of debris blocking their vision.*
*Lowering himself Calixso pushes his back against her as if guarding her. Ears scanning for anything other than the wind. Occasionally, his ears twitch as the dust shoots into his ears.*
“Stay close.”
(1st Variant Risen Encounter)
*Luna’s ears go down as she turns, putting her back against his, compound aimed at the creature as light starts shining through the dust. Her first instinct tells her to run, but ear twitches, trying to think of something. She nudges him, pointing to a tree thats about 50 ft ahead of them as she notices the creature lacks arms*
*Calixso nods in response. Beginning to make his way towards the tree after handing her a pair of infrared goggles; equipping his own so they both may see through the debris. He unbuckles the holster just in case they get into a confrontation.*
* it stumbles over, seeing a rotting walking corpse, it runs over at it and consumes the whole thing with ease, its body opening up and swallowing it, noting that it will eat anything that is moving, keeps my arrow trained on glass where the light emanates from, the tree 40 ft away now*
*Calixso trains his eyes on the creature as he continues to shuffle toward the tree, unsure whether to attempt to eliminate the threat or let it be. My tail tucked as i fear uncertainty in situations that require tact and sensitivity.*
*Luna detects something as we move to about twenty feet to the tall tree with easy to reach branches. The tall creature apparently has seen us which is indicated by its light turning red on us again and it starts to charge at us. She looses another arrow but misses the glass and hits the metal instead, disorienting it. It pauses for about five seconds giving them a window to make a dash for the tree. She pushes him slightly to signal to sprint as she darts towards the tree*
*Calixso complies and begins a frantic sprint toward the tree*
(thinking to himself) a symbol of hope for life it seems, amongst this barren wasteland scarred with disease, the tree stands tall.
*Breathing heavily, i take a knee and clasp my hands together; underside facing upwards to boost her up into the branches.*
*Luna leaps up grabbing onto a branch and in one swift motion sets her arrow, draws back, and shoots at the creature with a hunting arrow; one of the best ones she has and it hits the glass, cracking it and it almost shrieks, she reaches down to Calixso to help him up*
*Taking her paw, Calixso pulls himself up using his legs to run up the base of the trunk. Both Luna and Calixso climb higher into the tree until they are both confident that the creature has no chance of reaching them.*
“We can't let that thing get away. It might come back. Your arrow seemed to affect it. Perhaps the key to killing it is by striking where the light emanates.
*Luna looks at it*
" I don't think we should kill it Cal"
* Luna turns to look at Calixso*
“ It eats those rotting corpses that are walking around, that could be a good thing. Less for us to worry about."
*Calixso looks at Luna briefly before looking down at the creature.*
“How do you suppose we can get it to go away?”
* Luna sighs thinking, and sighs*
"Maybe we should get rid of it. It's probably more dangerous than it’s worth."
* Luna draws back at her arrow. Waits for the arrow to set on its rest, steady now and makes a soft whistle to gain its attention causing it to look at us. She lets go, hitting the glass harder due to the closer range, the transparent substance breaks and shatters. The creature falls down after a few seconds and lays there, unnatural blood seeping out of the dead beast*
*Calixso climbs down from the tree after scanning the area for any more threats. Slowly, he approaches the carcass. He kicks it to see if it has any stimuli left to verify its death.*
“Nice shot.”
"Thanks."
*Luna grabs her survival blade and carefully detaches one of its larger teeth and whistles in how large, sharp and spear like it is. Luna puts it in her bag not touching it with her hands, wrapping it up in cloth, she nods ready to go*
*The two resume moving toward the safehouse. Calixso looks to his right for a second as they come to a fork in the road.*
“Not too far now. Just a bit further and we can rest.”
* Luna follows behind him, her ears searching for sounds*
*Sure enough. No longer than 10 minutes later the two come up to a building.*
Calixso: “Here we are.”
*Calixso walks up to a large metal door. To the side of this is a small keypad. He presses, 5-2-9-0. The door makes a loud CLANG before opening. Emitting a piecing metallic shriek.*
“After you.”
*Luna walks into the building, although she is in a safe location a sense of ease doesn’t come back to her immediately as she appears to still be tense, looks around making sure Cal is also in the room*
“I’m glad I found you whilst i was scavenging the more survivors the better chance we have of staying alive. Here…”
*Calixso takes her bags and sets them on the table in the center of the room.*
“Take a seat on the couch. We’ve both been through enough for today.”
*Calixso takes his bag off his shoulder, walks over to a portable fridge and begins stocking it with the provisions gathered from their trip.*
*Luna lays down, her body relaxing for once and looks at Cal as he unpacks* *Calixso finishes distributing the items into the desired locations. Shortly, he joins Luna on the couch.*
“May I ask a little about who you are?”
"What do you mean, like hobbies, or my background?" * Luna takes out a book from her bag, yellowish paper from how long i've had it, some of the pages torn, and looks through it, starting to draw on one page using a worn down 3h pencil, varying my pencils every now and then*
“Oh! So you’re an artist?”
*Calixso peers over her shoulder to see what she is putting down on the paper*
*Luna growls slightly, but stops, she shows her paper, sketching the creature from earlier. Turns a page and shows the more common Risen, the book is more of a recorded history and how to kill guide, even showing an updated map after the Risen first appeared. Luna has older maps as well, showing geographic features and topography*
"Thats a part of who i am.”
“Well, you can call me impressed. When did you have the time to do all this?”
*Calixso rubs the back of his neck as he recognizes each landform depicted on the paper, clearly astonished.*
“I don’t think i can draw that well, however i do dabble in a few martial arts here and there. I’ve been training in Krav maga since i was a pup. Haven’t had to use it as much now that the populace is down; which pretty much translates to less hoodlums to have to deal with. Can’t be too confident that we won’t run into more survivors if i found you out there.” (kk)
*Luna turns her head towards Calixso*
"Well, before you found me, there was a surviving civilization some kilos away from here, i left it due to the infestation still getting through."
* Luna goes through some papers showing names of the people that were there*
“Not good people i have to say, i believe most of em escaped though, did try to warn em though. And no I didn't abandon them, i was accused of a crime and was kicked out because i tried to warn everyone.*
*Calixso’s ears droop as he reads over the list of people. His body tensing as an overwhelming amount of emotion takes over his mind.*
“All those people… They didn’t deserve that. No matter what they may have done in life… and thinking about the younger ones that didn’t even have the
opportunity to make those-
*she stops him*
"No I mean it, we were all in prison when it happened, they were all murderers, and worse. No children. No innocents except me."
* Luna looks at him, showing emotion in just her facial expression. Her ears twitching*
“I was the only innocent one there cause... nevermind."
*Calixso stares at her with his amber eyes.*
“Please continue, you can tell me anything. After all, there isnt really anyone around to gossip to.”
*Calixso chuckles softly at his joke, retaining the atmosphere of serious conversation.* (kk)
" I was basically born there. That’s why i was there. Society was shit in the area we were in. We couldn’t do anything, my mom died years later after getting stabbed to death. I lived there to live out my mom's sentence."
*Luna looks down and just closes the book*
*Calixso:
*
“I’m… I’m sorry for your loss, and what you had to endure. Living your life in a cell sounds horrible. I can’t imagine my mother or any of my brothers having to go through the same process.”
*Calixso rubs her shoulder sympathetically before standing up and walking to a door across the room. Opening it and rummaging through things.*
*Luna gets up and rummages through her bag, pulls out something, some preservatives that she made when the she was first let out into the world. It being her favorite thing in the world and opens it, the room instantly smelling sweet*
*Calixso picks up an object after pushing some things around before the smell hits him causing him to abruptly stop what he is doing. Ears perked he turns around, sniffing.*
“What is that?!”
“They’re homemade sugar plums. It was the only thing my mom could make in prison."
*Luna goes over to Cal offering him some*
*Calixso is unsure whether to take one of the few things he is aware Luna has left of her mothers now passed life.*
“Are you sure?”
*Luna nods*
*Hesitantly, Calixso accepts the fruit. Taking it into his paw he takes a bite out of it. Not even a moment after initially putting the fruit into his mouth, his eyes light up.*
“Mmff!” *Chews and swallows* “Those are really good! You helped to make them?”
"Oh, no, i made these ones, but i do have several jars of me mums. They kick mine out of the water."
*She picks another plum from the container, sucks off the syrupy juices on its exterior, and pops the whole plum into her mouth.*
*Calixso watches her eat the fruit.*
“I can’t even begin to fathom what your mother’s batch tastes like. The one you just gave me was already better than most things i’ve been able to get a hold of. Jesus…”
*Calixso hears Luna giggle from his remark and grabs the lid, puts it on top of the jar and seals it. She places it back into her bag, her tail is swaying over the ground as she does this, in a good mood from the great tasting source of energy, the extreme nourishment. Luna begins to close the bag before grabbing a hold of a device, turns it on and puts on some music*
“Hmm, what next?"
“For now, we wait for the morning we’ve got enough food to last us for tonight through lunch.” (kk)
*Calixso turns his attention the object he grabbed a few moments ago and raises it before himself. The object turns out to be a small book-like object with a strap binding it closed. He opens it to reveal a series of photographs. Calixso smiles to himself as he browses through the photos. After reviewing them, he passes the album to Luna*
“You shared with me. Might as well show you some of my life to return the favor.”
*Luna takes the album from Cal. The photos depict what is clearly recognizable as a much younger Calixso amongst a group of small children. Presumably these are the brothers he mentioned earlier. They appear to be rough housing as an unseen force took a picture from behind the lens, thusly not appearing in the picture. The next photo shows Calixso and his father playing catch with a baseball in an empty field. The next, Calixso is swimming at what appears to be a competition amongst fellow peers with a coach in mid bark as he corrects a student on their form. Several photos are seen showing Calixso’s childhood memories. Keeping them frozen in time. The final slot is empty.* (kk)
*Luna enjoys every picture shown, seeing how energetic Calixso is/was, her tail swaying at the same pace as when she ate the plum, smiling at each photograph*
"Seems like a fun life before all this stuff happened huh?"
*Luna stares at the brothers for a moment, wondering about what it might have been like to have siblings, and turns back to the picture of Calixso's father*
*Calixso smiles*
“Yeah. Life seemed to be so much simpler then… once ya take away all the corpses walking around now.
*Calixso looks down to see what picture she’s looking at, noticing that she is taking a bit longer on the photo than the others.*
“Did… You never got to meet your father did you?”
* Luna simply shakes her head as she looks at the picture*
“He never came to visit, he sent food sometimes but it was only on my birthdays*
*Calixso cannot help but submit to his emotions upon hearing this additional information. In one swift motion he embraces her in his arms, squeezing lightly.*
“You’ve been through all this… coupled with this outbreak. How do you keep the motivation and determination to keep going?
*Calixso takes his arms from around her, extending them so that he can clearly see her face. His eyes locked on hers as he honestly feels sympathetic for her.*
*Luna, blushes slightly, but Calixso couldn't tell from her darkly colored fur. She shyly hugs back as she rests her head onto his shoulder, avoiding his eye contact, and shakes her head*
"My mom was a hard worker, but then my dad stacked all of his drugs on her and she got caught, she didn't even know."
*Calixso stands silent for a moment*
“....So… so… *sighs* so you and your mother had to stay in prison together… until your mothers… *decides it’d be best not to bring that back up* ... because your father had to get his “fill”, so to speak. I cannot stomach this… please excuse me a moment.
*Calixso walks into a room that appears to look like an office.*
*Luna goes over to him, taking a locket out from under her shirt, it shows Luna as a little girl, and a tall figure*
" He was like a dad to me, he was around for a little while, he was a guard who taught me how to read and lots of things, but he died of old age and he never came back. He was nice though"
