  • I see no way in which this could go horribly wrong

Seems like a trace to me. Try GIMP perhaps. Considered getting a graphicsts tablet? It would make creation of OC exponentially easier with proper practice.

I was actually considering getting GIMP, however I was hesitant after hearing its drawing pad was rather 'off'
If you have had any experience with it, was it any good?

GIMP offers a good amount of utility, but acts wierd with pressure sensitivity of tablets. Then again, FireAlpaca might be better.
