titanic sinking thought experiment
« on: October 25, 2015, 07:32:37 PM »
Ok, youre the captian of the titanic, the ship is in its last moments before sinking, what would YOU do?
Would you go down with the ship as is tradition and save the life of one more passgenger or would you take that spot for yoursef. Or would you do something else ?

Probably go down with the ship. I would rather go ahead and die.

Let everyone else off first in the lifeboats/whatever, me and the remaining people aboard would then find some other means to survive, only giving up when we are dead.

If it was my Fursona doing it, we would probably succeed somehow. though in real life, I would fail and die. :(

Probably go down with the ship as per tradition. But then again you can never say for sure what you would do in a life or death situation, survival instincts and such

Sometimes it's very easy to say "Oh I'd do the moral decision", but humans have a biological urge for self-preservation, this urge can very easily get in the ways of morals or logic. When you're in the state of mind of fear, cold water surrounding you, all you can think about is the pain of drowning, losing your life, all your progress that you have ever made ended and for naught. I think most people then wouldn't be thinking "I'll go down with the ship" or "I'll sacrifice myself to save another person". Fear is one of humanities strongest and most motivating factors, usually stronger than morals and ethics.
