Lyrical Discussion
« on: September 16, 2009, 10:03:18 PM »
I listen to ALOT of different music, and the thing that's put right in front of us I find quite interesting - The lyrics.

Different bands have the different styles in writing lyrics: Apocalyptic, inspiring, comedic, suicidal, or telling a story. There's many ways, and the many uses of words artists have to make them even better. I just thought a good discussion (Or just random posts popping up about your favorite lyric fragments) would be pretty cool. :)

To cover some ground rules, NO lyrics can be submitted if they contain foul language or insult a race, gender, or position. And also, don't fight about lyrical content being correct or not, we don't know. No one needs to get ratty bout a missing apostrophe. :P

Just to kinda start it up, gotta say my two favorite lyricists are Arif Miradbolgaghi (Protest The Hero... I think I spelled his name right, haha) and Omar Rodriquez-Lopez (The Mars Volta). Specifically (I'll just use Protest the hero as an example), here's a bit from their song Sequoia Throne:

"Bending light and beaming forth across space-time
to see who's scared in the reflection of the royal black gods.
Just know it's not a meteor like our movies imply.

They're not the ones who've come to kill us, come to fill us full of lead.
They're not the ones to hate us, and they are not the ones who mutilate our animals.
Or travel through the stars; they're not the ones who cause us harm.

We are still life and cold blooded (we feel nothing)."

The songs about people getting worked up about alien myths and thinking the worlds gonna end because of it. It's really good use of words, in my opinion. :)
This shall pass... Megalomania... Congratulations on mutilation for life.

UPDATE: Almost done with the mask!! Furred it all but the eye area, just gotta get to that and details like the nose and teeth. Now writing for new album!

Yeah, this seems like a good Idea, I like those lyrics, very nice. Well my favourite use of lyrics are from the song 'The Approaching Curve' by Rise Against...sometimes the words don't quite fit to the rythym of the song, but I feel that it adds to the song

Here's the lyrics:

[Spoken:]
The music blared with a calming frequency.
The speakers gently seeped the sounds of ambient keyboards and light percussion,
creating a seductive soundtrack to our midnight drive through curtains of blackness.
The windows were cold to the touch, reflecting the icy conditions in our immediate extremity.
Salt stains and fingerprints littered the glass, and streets with melted snow cascaded down its length.
The music pulsed louder, yet gentle, like the far away squeal of a pot of boiling water.
The skyline was glowing faintly with vague hints of an impending dawn.
The car raced along a painfully straight stretch of road,
and she hadn’t so much as turned the steering wheel two degrees in the last twenty minutes,
nor had we spoken.

As we were, so perfect ,so happy.
They'll remember, only our smiles 'cause that’s all they’ve seen.
Long since dried, when we are found, are the tears in which we had drowned.
As we were, so perfect, so happy.

[Spoken:]
“Why are you doing this?” she spoke as if not expecting a response.
Her voice penetrated the still air of our speechless drive, so suddenly that my heart had jumped.
“I’m not doing anything,” I said, but I didn’t even believe that myself.
“This is what’s best, for me, for you, for us." Or maybe just for me, I thought,
as a tear formed in the pit of her eye. The music poured through the speakers
and we were losing ourselves in the cadence. She looked down momentarily and closed her eyes
for a bit longer than a standard blink. Then she was crying. Then she was shouting.
Then I was shouting, now pouring confessions, having no answers, or solutions,
we barely even knew the questions.

As we were, so perfect ,so happy.
They’ll remember, only our smiles 'cause that’s all they’ve seen.
Long since dried, when we are found, are the tears in which we had drowned.
As we were, so perfect, so happy.

Don’t put me under ground, I was meant for a life somewhere else.
Please Love give me the wheel before both of our hearts you will steal tonight. (Will steal tonight.)

As we were, so perfect, so happy.
They'll remember, only our smiles 'cause that’s all they’ve seen.
Long since dried, when we are found, are the tears in which we had drowned.
As we were, so perfect, so happy.

[Spoken:]
Our cracking voices became part of the music.
The car pressed on faster through the night. As our voices lowered,
the cadence again overtook the air.
Up ahead there was a curve approaching.
She made no indications of slowing.

I hope you will remember me, At least say so to comfort me, You say goodbye so easily, Its now or never, It may seem really pitiful, But life became too beautiful, The pain of love unbearable, It's now or never, Gone Forever.

Seems fun, heres some parts from a few songs ^_^

The from the song "Shogun"
Quote
Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
Down on your face, ripping your veins out
Your insides win and kill you from within

From the song "Down from the sky"
Quote
I've opened up my eyes
Seen the world for what it's worth
Tears rain down from the sky

They'll blow it all to bits
To prove whose god wields all the power
Fire rains down from the sky

From the song "E.P.M"
Quote
Blind my eyes burning forever to wash my sins away
Out of the dark pain is the price
Fly away out of the raging storm
Lost within my memories
Still haunting me
A never ending story

I think everyone can guess which song this is:
Quote
It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just wanna live while I'm alive

My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said, I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
it's my life

Cant beat the cat, Mr. Yusuf Islam's "Where do the children play"

Quote
Well I think it's fine, building jumbo planes.
Or taking a ride on a cosmic train.
Switch on summer from a slot machine.
Get what you want to if you want, 'cause you can get anything.

I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

And some lovely stuff by Hijak Oscar here in Creeping Fool

Quote
Whatever happened to the creeping fool?
All alone in his moonlit pool.
You've got me thrashing through the pieces that hold it together

Here's to the time we shared in his head

The dogs would bark and howl up at the moon
To mask the scars of an old mans spark
And to bait the bite of all those cardboard sharks

Here's to the time we shared in his head

An urge to kill the man that took you over
Applaud to all the memories and pain
The crawling pain of the creeping fool

This one, yeah I'm putting the whole song, but it's leonard Cohen, and he's just a legendary lyricist. Here's "In My Secret Life"

Quote
I saw you this morning.
You were moving so fast.
Can’t seem to loosen my grip
On the past.
And I miss you so much.
There’s no one in sight.
And we’re still making love
In My Secret Life.

I smile when I’m angry.
I cheat and I lie.
I do what I have to do
To get by.
But I know what is wrong,
And I know what is right.
And I’d die for the truth
In My Secret Life.

Hold on, hold on, my brother.
My sister, hold on tight.
I finally got my orders.
I’ll be marching through the morning,
Marching through the night,
Moving cross the borders
Of My Secret Life.

Looked through the paper.
Makes you want to cry.
Nobody cares if the people
Live or die.
And the dealer wants you thinking
That it’s either black or white.
Thank G-d it’s not that simple
In My Secret Life.

I bite my lip.
I buy what I’m told:
From the latest hit,
To the wisdom of old.
But I’m always alone.
And my heart is like ice.
And it’s crowded and cold
In My Secret Life.
"Parents always think kids are wasting their youth, and always have done [so] down through the millennia," says Tom Forsyth of RAD Game Tools. "'That Ug, always holding things. His front paws will develop in funny ways. Why can't he walk on all fours like normal proto-hominids?' And so, whatever the kids spend the most time doing, that's always what parents think is a waste of time, and what is corrupting their lives. It doesn't matter what that is. If all they did was homework, parents would be worrying that their kids aren't becoming well-rounded people. And, in fact, parents do this - enrolling math nerds in karate classes and the like. There is no way to win - parental paranoia ensures that kids are always doing the wrong thing."

Tool is the best band for this. :P

Vicarious: How people are addicted to tradegy in the news.
Quote
Don't look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other (you)
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child,
Watches him die,
Hands to the sky cryin "why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die from a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

Right In Two: How ignorant man-kind is.
Quote
Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father* give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.

Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it right in two.

Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason,
And this is what they choose?

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys.
Give them thumbs, they forge a blade,
And where there's one they're bound to divide it right in two.

Lateralus: Being an Individual within the norms.
Quote
Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see there is so much more
and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind.

Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in,
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out,
I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out. Keep going, going...
