Movies You Watch = Your Personality?
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:30:10 PM »
Well, while browsing the intewebs and going on Psychology Today I caught a very interesting article.

What it pretty much is saying whatever movies you like and/or like to watch, can describe the kind of person you are or the personality you have.

Theres a quiz you can take, [ http://www.thefagans.org.uk/filmuses/ ] which can test your "Movie" personality.

My results were:
Quote
YOUR PERSONALITY
Take a look at how you scored on the Big Five personality dimensions below.
Your scores, compared with the responses of other people, suggest that you may be described as follows:

YOU ARE 75% EXTRAVERTED.
You are moderate in activity and enthusiasm. You enjoy the company of others but you also value your privacy.

YOU ARE 42% AGREEABLE.

You are hard-headed, sceptical, proud and competitive. You tend to express your anger directly.

YOU ARE 58% CONSCIENTIOUS.

You are dependable and moderately well-organised. You generally have clear goals and are able to set goals aside.

YOU ARE 25% EMOTIONALLY STABLE.

You are sensitive, emotional and prone to experience feelings that are upsetting.

YOU ARE 83% OPEN TO NEW EXPERIENCES.

You are practical but willing to consider new ways of doing things. You try to seek a balance between the old and the new.

WHY YOU WATCH MOVIES

We have proposed 10 psychological uses for watching films.
Below are your scores for each of these 10 uses, and the relevant descriptions of the ways in which you enjoy films.

PLEASURE-SEEKING: 90%/NOSTALGIA: 55%
Your high score on the “pleasure seeking” dimension suggests that you are a hedonistic movie watcher – this means you enjoy films that give you pleasure or make you feel good./The “nostalgia” dimension refers to the extent to which you watch movies in order to re-experience the past. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people.

CATHARSIS: 70%/AGGRESSION: 95%
Your high score on the “catharsis” dimension suggests that you watch movies in order to feel miserable and suffer with the characters of the movie – this is actually a psychological strategy that enables you to feel better (purging the soul from negative feelings)./Your high score on the “aggressive” dimension suggests that you enjoy watching violent movies, such as action or war films. This may be because such movies help you release aggression and tension, though it could also indicate that you have an aggressive personality.

ESCAPISM: 55%/SENSATION-SEEKING: 70%
The “escapism” dimension refers to the extent to which you watch movies in order to escape or forget about reality. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people./Your high score on the “sensation seeking” dimension suggests that you watch movies in order to experience arousing feelings – thus you have a tendency to prefer exciting and arousing movies. This is the equivalent of being a movie adrenaline junkie. ARTISTIC: 45% INFORMATION-SEEKING: 45%
The “artistic” dimension refers to the extent to which you are interested in aesthetically driven, conceptual, and highly creative films. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people. The “information seeking” dimension refers to the extent to which you are a curious and intellectual movie watcher. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people.

BOREDOM-AVOIDANCE: 55%/SOCIALISATION: 80%
The “boredom avoidance” dimension refers to the extent to which you watch films primarily as a means of avoiding boredom. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people./Your high score on the “socialising” dimension suggests that you are more interested in the company of others than the actual movie; and that you rarely see the point of watching movies alone. Watching movies is a social experience for you

I figured this would be fun for you guys to take.

WHY YOU WATCH MOVIES

We have proposed 10 psychological uses for watching films.
Below are your scores for each of these 10 uses, and the relevant descriptions of the ways in which you enjoy films.

PLEASURE-SEEKING: 100% NOSTALGIA: 50%
Your high score on the “pleasure seeking” dimension suggests that you are a hedonistic movie watcher – this means you enjoy films that give you pleasure or make you feel good.    The “nostalgia” dimension refers to the extent to which you watch movies in order to re-experience the past. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people.

CATHARSIS: 45% AGGRESSION: 50%
The “catharsis” dimension refers to the extent to which you watch movies in order to feel miserable and suffer with the characters of the movie. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people.    The “aggressive” dimension refers to the extent to which you enjoy watching violent movies in order to release aggression or tension. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people.

ESCAPISM: 75% SENSATION-SEEKING: 50%
Your high score on the “escapism” dimension suggests that you watch movies in order to escape or forget about reality – thus films provide you with the necessary distractions to switch off from everyday problems.    The “sensation seeking” dimension refers to the extent to which you watch movies on order to experience arousing or adrenalising feelings. Your score on this dimension is average or similar to most people.

ARTISTIC: 75% INFORMATION-SEEKING: 25%
Your high score on the “artistic” dimension suggests you are interested in aesthetically driven, conceptual, and highly creative films – essentially this suggests you have a very artistic taste in movies (and are probably also interested in other forms of art).    Your low score on the “information seeking” dimension suggests that you are not very curious or intellectual in your movie choices– thus you do not particularly enjoy movies that enable you to learn something new or increase your knowledge (e.g., documentaries or historically accurate films).

BOREDOM-AVOIDANCE: 15% SOCIALISATION: 100%
Your low score on the “boredom avoidance” dimension suggests that you do not watch films primarily as a means of avoiding boredom. Thus you are probably more interested in what specific movie you choose.     Your high score on the “socialising” dimension suggests that you are more interested in the company of others than the actual movie; and that you rarely see the point of watching movies alone. Watching movies is a social experience for you.

Eh, the personality stuff is pretty accurate, but it's really generic enough to fit anybody. Also, some of the reasons it said I watch movies aren't really that accurate. It's mainly pleasure seeking, nostalgia, and escapism for me. I never watch a movie for aggression, catharsis, or information-seeking. I just like eye-candy.
