The furry fandom... oh COME ON!!! >.<
« on: July 22, 2010, 07:49:36 PM »

Sheesh... i am really happy to be back from computer hiatus, but seriously folks, what is up with the fandom?

While i was on Hiatus i was still keeping tabs in on all of my friends that i can get ahold of via facebook and phone, and i have been watching youtube videos and looking for art on DA, but what i am realizing is something that is bugging me. Constantly i am trying to give the Fandom a better name by telling people what we, or what I think, we are, and it seems like the evidence supporting the opposite keeps appearing.

okay, i think i got a little off on a ramble there, but here is the point:

We SAY that the furry fandom is not about sex, that it is more oriented to Role Play and art, but when you take a look around at the types of furries who are public, they follow the stereotype of the sex crazed furry. It's really hard to convince parents/friends/acquaintances that the fandom isn't all that bad when there are major examples of deviancy in plain view. I know I didn't join the fandom for all of that, but the one who do join for that particular reason are the ones that speak out and give us a bad name! I know not all of the Furs out there want to give us a bad name, but just looking at Facebook and other sites, it is a little depressing to see all of this.

Now, maybe sex rules other groups of people and not just the Furry fandom, but you don't hear about Goths or Gamers having kinky sex or drawing sex pictures and running them all over the web. Sometimes I have to fall back on my Gamer friends when Troll keep on attacking my DA and my Blog. I have had to take down and delete one of my blogs due to it being hacked by Trolls.

So, people, if we don't want to be told we are sex deviants and to have the whole internet after our tails, I think we should keep the yiffy pictures to 18 up sites like FA and DA. We shouldn't go out and talk to the media about all of our kinks and deviancies, like in the BBC documentary "Alice in Wonderland" talking about furries. We will just get more bad press. It may be a lifestyle for some people, but the people  to whom it is a FANDOM, and has always been a fandom, we get the blame for people who abuse furry.

I don't care what you do behind closed doors, in fact i encourage you to express yourself. But in front of people that are A) not interested or B) wouldn't understand, it is a problem.

okay... i apologize if i kinda rambled there a bit, but i hope you get the gist and comment.

I hate to say it, but it is what it is. Even if there is little porn in the fandom people will focus on that one small aspect. When you join a fandom you have to take the good with the bad, regardless weather you want it or not. You can't force anyone to believe what you believe, or think the way you think. I read so much stuff on here about people wondering why furries come off this way, or why people hate us. I don't know about anyone else, but I've personally had people come up to me and say they hate me because I'm a furry. I've had kids say they will kick my butt cause I'm a furry, even scared one women away cause she realized I was one. I just smile, and act pleasant towards them. If someone hates me because I'm a furry, good for them, they just lost a chance to get to know me.

But if all furries do is whine about how it's not fair, well tough. Life is not fair. If you can practice a little tolerance towards people who hate you for no real reason, things go much smoother. Yes the fandom is full of kinks and strange things, but so is the rest of the world. Get over it. Learn to just deal with what life throws at you. If you can't tolerate and accept the hate, then don't join a fandom knowing full well what happens.

These are my opinions, don't really care if anyone else agrees, just felt like adding in my two cents.

I think we should keep the yiffy pictures to 18 up sites like FA and DA.

If anything, there shouldn't be anything along those lines on either of those sites, DA especially.  DA was set up as an art site, and is pretty mainstream so posting those sorts of pictures to there is like plastering it to a billboard and wondering why people see it...

FA too, although i admit there's nothing i can do about it, should be the same. If FA were to be kept clean too, then it could be a gleaming beacon to show people who don't understand without running the risk of them finding something which just makes it all look worse.

As for facebook, i've never understood why there are furries on there, again it seems like such a mainstream place that i don't see how people can act suprised when they attract hate, and wonder why the trolls be hatin' too.

If people do wish to indulge in viewing mature artworks or whatever, that's fine and i'm sure they can find their own places for that, but you really can't be going to the most mainstream of places, posting stuff which already draws attention in it's own right by being furry art, and then wonder why there's such a bad rep.

Its like AR said too, you were probably aware of the reputation that furries have before you joined up.  I don't mean to discourage, but it seems fair enough to assume that the hate isn't going to disappear overnight just because you signed up for it.

It's an unfortunate fact, but the media is all about sensationalism.

Now which is more sensational...

A.  A normal person explaining what the fandom really is.
          or
B.  A group of sexual deviants illustrating their thoughts in detail.

One must also remember the proverb "a picture is worth a thousand words"...

@AR and Garth: No, i am and was quite aware of the fandom's "Darker side". I am quite cool with it. In fact, i encourage it. Just not in the blatant shoving it into other peoples faces.
