The Last Hope
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:35:54 PM »
Hey I dont know where to put thes but I think this is the right place lol My story takes place in the future where man kind is basicly at its end.... But here is my first three chapters, I know grammer and spelling sucks but i dont have MWord so its kinda hard lol but please tell me what you think ><

Chapter 1
The alarm goes off, it is now eight a.m. The alarm plays one of Zane’s favorite songs made almost 200 years ago, Rooster. He gets up listening to his favorite part. He thinks out loud, “How did this planet get so messed up?”

The room is very high tech. In the room there is a Hologram of the sun that turned on when the alarm went off. The walls look like the most beautiful beaches that have ever existed and appear like something out of a dream. The floor matches the walls, either being the purest of blues or the color of perfect sand. The floor even feels like water and sand, even though it isn’t real it affects all five of the human sense.

The bed itself looked particularly normal, until carefully examined. The bed was made out of a material that on contact absorbs the energy and molds to the formation of the person. The material also has tiny nanobots that measure muscle reflexes and heart rate to study the mind while in sleep state.

There are no windows, if there were he would endanger himself to harmful radiation. There is not much at night, but during the day when the sun is at its fullest, no one was allowed outside, direct exposure to sunlight could cause radiation burns on the skin as well as other painful problems.

Legion, Zane’s AI, responses to his rhetorical question “It was in human nature for this to happen, the only thing you can blame is your species.”  Legion’s voice is very similar to Zane’s, there is only one major difference, it talks with some hope, and happiness. Zane could be considered one of the last people born. Zane is sixteen, and has no parents. He was one of the few survivors from the “Tilt”.

“I know, Legion. You say this every time I ask. I just wish I could walk out side without having to wear the radiation suit, and be able to touch real trees, and lay on the ground, or even feel the snow, and see my family one more time.” Zane’s voice sounds like he could start crying at any moment and his eyes start tearing up. “I just want to…. Hear them tell me they love me once more…” Legion not wanting to see his best friend sad, tries to cheer him up, “You will see them again eventually. Your project is halfway done, and if it works you can recreate them just how you remembered”

Zane is the only human Legion knows. He was given to Zane before "it" happened. Zane grew up with Legion and Legion grew up with Zane. Legion is one of the few AI’s ever made. It takes a huge amount of energy and data to turn a VI into an AI. There were 18 known AI’s in the world 16 of them are multiple consciences that work together to form a consensus to do or say something. But the other 2 AI’s are unique, they have there own separate mind. They have gained what people could call, the soul. It was impossible to have predicted their transformation from many to one.

Legion is unique in the sense that he has gained the ability of a soul. Legion is an ironic name for him, and Zane knew it, that is why he picked it. Legion is with Zane where ever he goes. One of the projects Zane is working on is to build Legion a body and to turn him into a liveing creature. Zane picked Legion as his AI's name because it was also off a few comic books he was able to find that are over 150 years old. He has a bunch of old books, he reads them, then sells them. That is the only way he could afford his way to live with all the technology, and research he does.

Right now Legion is stored in a microchip. The microchip is inside an IDT (Intelligent Data Transferor). So Zane knows he will never lose Legion he put the IDT inside his left arm. Zane changed the IDT so it can transfer the data to anything and everything and if there is no way for them to communicate he can transfer the data into a special virtual image which would be shown through his hologram glove.

"Legion, I don't think I can finish that project until I finish creating a body for you. I have two designs if you want to see, they are from old comic books that we decided to keep. One of the designs is from a comic book series called Mass Effect, another one is from Ironman. I personally like the design from Mass Effect apparently the robotic figures were called Geth." Zane pulls up the designs from the imaging software in the walls and feeds it through a hologram projector.

"Geth, the name is nice, and they look amazing but they kind of look a little evil also. It has a unique design and you will definitely be able to pick me out of a crowd of VI's, I would be the only non-human AI/VI ever made." "Then it is settled then. I will begin constructing it as soon as I take a shower." Legion notices that as Zane says it he seems happy. It is the first time over a year that he has seen Zane happy. "Legion, since this is a special occasion I think I will use real water this time."

Chapter 2
"So, Legion what materials do you think we will need to make your body?" Zane says this as the pure water is being thrown onto his face. The water moves fast yet feels smooth, and soft. The water then continues to fill up the tub to form a small pool of water to relax in. It is as if he is taking a shower in a waterfall.

Zane has never seen a real waterfall except only in the holos. This is a treat for him; the normal water he uses is the fake and slimy water. The water is purified to the best it can be, but it will never be clean. Pure water can only be found hundreds of feet underground in untouched canals and reservoirs.

"We will need a lot of carbon nanotubes. Which will take some time to make and can only be made in two cities the closest being Iopa. I think we should concentrate on obtaining that first before going out and getting the other items." "Iopa, wow I don't think I have been..." Legion cuts him off before he can finish his thought. "Zane, you were born there." "I was? How could I forget that? Well I guess it will be more interesting when I go there now."

Legion hesitates in saying what he wants to say, but he reluctantly admits "I never told you this but..." "Legion, what have you never told me?" Zane is surprised; he and Legion have never had secrets from each other. They always spoke their minds to each other hoping the other would give feed back.

"Never mind Zane, it is nothing. Sorry I mentioned it... So how long do you think it will take us to get to Iopa from here?" "Your side stepping the topic, but what ever Ill bite this time, next time I won’t. Well Iopa is around 40 miles away from here so if we go with our electric bike we might make it there within three hours. Once there we will go and talk to one of the scientists who work at HMEC and see if we can arrange something for the amount of nanotubes we need. After I would like to go look around if possible I've heard that they might have a technology museum that has collected ancient technologies that date back almost 500 years." Zane sounds eager when he mentions the museum.

"I wonder if they have old videos of the only time we were on the moon... I really hope that the museum exists." "I hope so too... Zane, can I go back to sleep for another hour?" "Sure I might too, right here, right now."

Zane closes his eyes and the water shuts off when the tube is filled. He falls into a deep sleep that lasts for an hour. He doesn't have any dreams or any nightmares; he sleeps, just like a dead body floating in a river.

When Legion wakes up it is just after nine. He decides it is necessary to copy some data onto Zane's hologlove. He mainly copies music, movies, data, and some pictures. "Zane, wake up its after nine." Zane wakes up and gets out of the shower, his hair flows down to his shoulders and feels just like silk. He goes into his bedroom. He searches through his clothes looking to see what he wants to wear.

"Hey, did you sleep well Legion? Did you have any dreams this time? You haven’t had one recently." Legion replies happily. "Yes! I did have a dream; it was a nice dream, but also a little depressing..." "Why was it depressing Legion?" As Zane says this he finds a pair of boxers and sport shorts to wear. “Again? Zane do you ever wear anything besides those?” Zane replies almost instantly, “Sport shorts are easier to move in during the heat.” He starts putting them on. “Well, the dream?”

"It was of us, and there where other people, not many, maybe 20, and then there was another AI. We were leaving Earth, for another planet. But we were with someone, no, not someone.... something..." Zane looking for a shirt now, he has an under shirt that feels soft and smooth, it also rejects heat from the sun to keep him cool.

"What do you mean by something else? Like aliens?" "I don't know, Zane that is all I can remember. You should bring some other stuff, since I think we will be gone for two days maybe even more. I already copied the files that we would need and want." "Thanks Legion, after I’m done getting dressed we will leave."

Zane starts packing up things that he would want to take. He takes his switchblade knife and everything else he needs he already has. "Well are you ready legion?" "Yea, I am always ready, just waiting on you” Zane’s face goes blank when he hears this. In a comical angry voice he whispers. "Shut… Up…” Legion doesn’t hear him and tries to rush him “Grab the bike and lets go!” Zane stops moving and says to him “Well, why don’t, you get it” Legion laughs and says “I don’t have any arms!” Zane goes into his safe that his hidden underneath his bed. As Zane does this he whispers to himself “Smart ass…” He opens it up and pulls out a box.

The box is black and blue and has a button on top of it. Zane pushes the button. The box then transforms into an electric bike. The bike is hollow which allows it to be very light and faster for less fuel. The bike is black and blue. It is in the design of a dirt bike. The seat is black as well as the top of the bike. The black transforms into blue in a windy, rain pattern. The lower the pattern gets the brighter the blue gets. "Well, Mr. Anxious, let's head out."

Chapter 3

"Zane, it is almost noon. You know you can't be outside, the sun's radiation will fry the circuits and you will roast in the suit in less than 10 minutes. We should just go inside, look there is a restaurant, and you can eat there to. We are almost to Iopa, stopping to eat for safety reasons will only take around an hour, which we can spare."

The radiation suit is invisible and is like a new layer of skin. It is like armor, a perfect shield against the sun. But to everything else it does nothing almost as if it was air. It would normally automatically shut off after it has been in the shade for a minute. It would then have to be manually turned on before going back outside. Zane’s however is different, it can never turn off, and if he removes it, it can never be replaced and he is as good as dead.

There is no road just sand on top of sand, with old buildings on the sides. A few hundred yards away there is a building that is not completely covered in sand. In the building there are lights on and the shadows of the walls can be seen. The Sun is almost directly on top of them. The temperature is around 150 degrees Fahrenheit. There are no plants. Anything green has become such a rarity they make diamonds seem as cheap as dust.

"Your right, we are almost to the restaurant. I just hope they have real food left, I am sick and tired of having fake food for everything." Legion and Zane come across the restaurant, it seems almost completely empty. There is only a bartender and two guests. Legion and Zane walk into the restaurant.

The restaurant was old looking. It had a few lights that hung from the ceiling. Only one of them worked however. There where a few tables that still stood. They looked newer then the rest of the building. The tables however were still old and run down. There were no chairs by the tables. There was shattered glass on top of the tables that looked untouched for hundreds of years.

The three people were towards the back of the room.  One person was standing still; he looked as if he was trying not to move. He was clenching his stomach, blood dripping from his hands. The bartender was tall and slim. To Zane he looked like one of the Beatles members 200 years ago.

Behind him was a rack of a bunch of glass bottles. What really caught Zane’s eyes however were the people who were sitting on stools. They looked new to him. Zane had never seen anyone like them before. The people had a dark tan skin color, and their eyes were blood red. They were tall, thin, and slouched over the table. They didn’t even notice him. He runs up eagerly to talk to them.

"Hi! What’s your name? Where are you from? How old are you? What do you guys do?" Zane speaks with excitement in his voice almost like a kid in a candy shop. The guests turn around and look at him.

The bartender is bleeding over his hand and rains onto the floor. He limps out of the room. One of the guests mumbles something to the other. They were speaking a language Zane had never heard of. Zane's face melted with excitement, listoning to every word they say even though he can't understand. The other guest turns to Zane sounding angry and hungry with a little sadness "We are Tevlen; we came here 20 years ago. I'm sorry kid, it's nothing personal." He turns pulls out a pistol.

The pistol is regularly used. When the person fires the gun it creates a wave or a “pulse”. The wave will crush everything at the moment it is released from the gun, then everything that is in the path will get pushed back with incredible amounts of force. The main problem with the gun, it is only deadly at point blank range.

Zane's face still covered with excitement pulls out his old switchblade knife. "Zane, we can't do anything against them if they have that type of weapon; it is too risky for close combat." Legions voice sounded worried, and it startled the two guests who were about to attack Zane.

"Well it's a good thing we upgraded my nervous system, and muscles, for speed. I can't wait to try it out!" "But you said that you still needed to test it out and that you don't know what the side affects where. For all you know it could kill you after you use it!" "Sometimes you need to run before you can walk" Zane says this with a smirk on his face as he ignores Legion's warnings and turns on the program to execute the changes inside his body, it happens in matter of seconds.

"May I ask you a question, Tevlen? Why are you attacking us?" He responds with a voice that sounds starved and empty; "We need the money to buy something to eat. We haven’t eaten a bite of food in two days, and we just ran out of drinkable liquids today." He looks at his friend and the friend pulls out a similar pistol. "Please kid, don't make this harder then it is." Zane looks down at the ground, then into his hand, then back down into the ground.

"I need what I have and I'm not giving it to anyone, for any reason. I respect your intentions but if you do attack then I will be forced to fight back and I will go for the kill, and with my new upgrades you won’t stand a chance." The second Tevlen guest finally says something to the other; he laughs first for a moment then looks at Zane. "You kill us?! Never in a million years!"

"You sure about that, Tevlen? I guess if you really want what we have then you will have to kill me for it." "Zane stop toying with them, you could get seriously hurt!" Zane still happy and full of excitement announces... "Well then lets start!"

The Second guest aims his pistol and fires. The pulse that is emitted from the gun crushes everything outside the barrel then pushes it all back toward Zane. The pulse spans a meter in all directions and is moving forward a 5 feet per second. Zane jumps up to try and dodge the pulse. He grabs onto a old hanging light. The support beam cracks then falls. The support beam was old and rusted, the moment his weight was added onto the light, it broke. As he and the beam fell he pushes off the beam. He flings him self towards a table, barely dodging the pulse.

While the second guest charges his pistol, the first guest fires. Zane lands to the right of the table. Zane roles to the left and underneath the table. Zane kicks out two legs supporting the table, the table falls on top of him so the wave will pass over him. Once the pulse passes him, he jumps out from behind the table. Zane grabs his knife by the blade, and throws it at the guest.

He executes a perfect throw to his target. The knife moves in a summersault motion and gets lodged into the seconded guest's gun. The second guest is stunned and tries to dislodge the knife. Zane jumps off the broken table moving toward the first guest.

When Zane reaches the guest he clenches his fist and hits him in the nose. The guest leans his head back and attempts to grab his nose. When the guest is leaned back, Zane throws a left hook into his stomach. On contact the guest leans forward. Zane then uppercuts him and hits him in the chin. The first guest falls on his back unconscious.

The second guest realizes what has happened and knows there is no way for him to win. He tries to make a run for it and escape the restaurant. The moment he runs outsid,e he realizes why he was at the restaurant in the first place. He knows what is about to happen. It is 12:30.

"That is one reason I am glad I am not a human..." Legion almost laughs as he says this. "Yea well ummm that’s not fair, at least.... ummm shit I got nothing" Zane jokes around with his answer knowing that if he doesn't answer it right it can really put a dent in there relationship. "Yea well I can't wait until we build me a body. Hey aren't you Hungary Zane? You haven't eaten at all today."

Ironically Zane's stomach growls when he says this. "Does that answer your question?" Zane looks around where the bartender was, he walks toward that area. He finds a bunch of old glass bottles that have a fancy design. The glass is tinted red from the bartender's and the bottles look to be wine.  There are some other bottles that are clear, they could be water. The glass is dusty, but clear and the liquid is clear. All of the bottles are sealed and look almost a hundred years old.

"It looks like there is no food here but we can grab some bottles and leave.” Zane sounds a tired and a little hungry. “We can’t leave yet, we have to wait for the signal.” Legion reminds Zane of the time. “Fine then. We can watch the mystery of Creo and then we will leave." Legion replies with one simple word; "Ok"

Zane relaxes in the chair the second guest was sitting in. He takes a clear bottle and opens it up. There was a loud noise that sounded like gun shot from an old gun that used metallic based bullets. Zane had a clue what happened. The bartender shot himself in the head he couldnt live with his wound and he wanted to die to escape the pain. Zane however did not want to go check, he was too tired, changing the aspects of how is body worked took its toll on him and he knew it.

You should split it up and show us these chapters one at a time, like one every few days. Putting 3 chapters in one big post is a bit of a mission to read.

But I will read it... soon.
"Parents always think kids are wasting their youth, and always have done [so] down through the millennia," says Tom Forsyth of RAD Game Tools. "'That Ug, always holding things. His front paws will develop in funny ways. Why can't he walk on all fours like normal proto-hominids?' And so, whatever the kids spend the most time doing, that's always what parents think is a waste of time, and what is corrupting their lives. It doesn't matter what that is. If all they did was homework, parents would be worrying that their kids aren't becoming well-rounded people. And, in fact, parents do this - enrolling math nerds in karate classes and the like. There is no way to win - parental paranoia ensures that kids are always doing the wrong thing."
