New to RP, someone want to help?

I'm new to both furdom and RPing, so it'd be greatly appreciated if someone would give me a few tips, and maybe a quick idea of what it's all about?

This thread as well as the other stickies in the Training Grounds board are a good place to start.

On this forum, we separate RPs into two groups.

"Serious" RPs are basically interactive stories. There's usually one person who will create the basic storyline and "world" where the plot takes place, and the other people participating in the RP interact within the given plot line. Your RP companions will generally expect you to be able to give frequent and consistent attention and activity to the RP (about once a day or so).

"Fun" RPs are much less structured and usually don't have a specific direction. There's usually just a topic or theme to go with, and you can jump in or leave as you please. These are good for just getting to know your fellow forum members.

well you can just hop in any fun rp you want, be sure to read the first post for the rules and know whats going on in the story before you do so.

For serious rp's you have to apply in the ooc thread for the rp you want to join by again reading the first post and filling out a character sheet with the appropriate information, usually consisting of Name, species, personality, weapon, and so on, though each rp asks for different information.

OOC stands for "Out Of Character." It's when you're talking to the other RP participants about something outside of the actual RP storyline.

For example, if you need to get clarification about what's going on or let people know that you can't post for a few days, that's something you'd say as yourself (a person at a computer), not as your character.

In any RP, there needs to be some way of indicating which part(s) of your post are "out of character" and which are "in character." If OOC text goes within the same thread, it's often differentiated by placing the text within ((double parentheses)), //slash marks//, or something like that. But for the Serious RPs on the forum here, we allow for separate threads to be used solely for OOC text, so that everything in that thread will be out of character, and everything in the RP thread will be said in character.
