There's one game that always comes to my mind when talking about relatively unheard of games: Rogue Galaxy. If it weren't for the abundance of other RPGs like it, then I bet it would have been more widely known. As it is I've never talked to anyone who's actually heard of it before, but it's one of my all time favorite games. Released in 2006, it has a great combat system, engaging story, creative characters, excellent music, and terrific item/crafting mechanics. Oh, and the Insectron minigame. What is insectron? Chess with battle-insects. I put more time into collecting, raising, and battling my insect team than the rest of the game combined. You can play through multiple tiers of AI opponents or you can play local multiplayer against a friend, and either way it stands as the most original and outright fun minigame I've ever played. If you like RPGs and still have a last-gen system, I highly recommend it.
