Different Types Of Foam
« on: November 10, 2016, 09:50:06 AM »
What density foam is the best for fursuiting? I get absolutely baffled by the variety of different upholstery foam densities that many places offer and I'm curious on which one is the best for making a fursuit. What does everyone use here? *I need to know :3*

Is it also better to seek foam from a shop irl or order online (assuming there is free shipping)

The foam is typically called 'open-cell foam', 'high-density foam' and 'polyurethane foam' in the description for online stores, such as the 'Luxury foam high-density' if you scroll down a bit (the green foam) http://www.foamandupholstery.com/Open_Cell_Foam.htm
They have that kind of foam at Jo-anns in the back usually, or some Wal-marts may, not sure if there's anything like that around you. Most you get by the yard, which is nice, but I've always had to get 2" in a package, I believe saying it's for seat cushions. Same material though.
Hope this helped a bit :D

In my experience it doesn't necessarily matter. I bought my foam from a local market held once a week. They have all kinds as well.
There is a technique where you can use even several types of foam to shape the head. It gives tons of possibilities. As long as the foam doesn't degrade and fall apart when you buy it, I think it should all be good :P
There are several (amateur and professional) fursuit makers who use different types of foam, and even combine several types for various reasons :)

Thanks so much everyone!
I usually like to buy those flat mattress things from IKEA and cut them open for foam and I believe that it doesn't specify the type of foam used.

No, it doesn't XD But that's ok.
I would think that would be more expensive than just straight-off buying foam, though. Try looking for stores (DIY stores for example) and markets and the like to see how much their foam costs. I really think that would be cheaper than what you're currently doing XD
And less work.

Ha, probably. Problem is the foam stores are quite far away .-.

No DIY stores nearby, either?
Or any online stores that ship to your place?

Sorry for ridiculously late reply .-.

There's many DIY stores around in Sydney that I have access to however they usually sell foam for the most ridiculous prices ever or they provide pre cut, ridiculously sized pieces.

Can't buy anything online, I'm not old enough yet.

However, I've found an extremely thin mattress / cushion thing from Kmart which happened to have foam in it and chopped it open  XD  (after I bought it of course.). It was much cheaper than the IKEA ones.

Thanks for all the help everyone!
