Advice on Writing Fight scenes?
« on: May 01, 2018, 08:00:30 AM »
I'm trying to write some action-oriented things with the stuff, but I don't have much experience with combat. Any advice would be appreciated!

That's a pretty broad category you're talking about here...

Why don't you tell us a little more about what you're trying to write, and what you really don't get on it?

Medieval fantasy type things, mainly.

That's still not very specific...

Do you know the general atmosphere you want to have during the combat scenes?

It depends, some would be more casual friendly sparring or training, others life or death stuff.

Whenever you're trying to write something you haven't experienced yourself, the best thing to do is research. Try to find out as much about it as you can from people who have been there.

The problem with this is that "fight scenes" is a category as broad as old Macdonald's farm.

You can do it like Monthy Python, and make it a completely rediculous and unrealistic comedy skit, like the black knight scene for example. You can do it like your stereotype american war movies and make it extremely dramatic, and focus all your characters getting PTSD. Or you can give it a more "life goes on" perspective, and focus on how things can happen very quickly, but that, whatever happends, the things that need doing still need to be done. And ETC.

There's not a right or a wrong way to do it. You do it in the way that you want your story to come out.

Best indeed is to follow up on Wz's advice, and just see if you can find a few examples that fit your style...

Here are some basics over simplified.
1. Don't be afraid to damage things. (Characters, environment, ect)

2. Don't be afraid to kill a character (This can be difficult)

3. Depending on style, try to avoid 'God like' aspects unless the story calls for it. I.e. Goku. (We all know he is gone win, and keep getting stronger)

That's my basic examples. If I need to expand tell me.
