Born in the heart of South America, Lucas J. Berrat is one of the most gifted non-American born individuals. When he was 3, he and his parents migrated north towards Mexico in 1973. After living in Mexico for eight years, the Berrats eventually saved enough to fly to Washington state, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Unfortunetly, due to the low family income, Lucas was unable to go to school untill he was 14. However, Lucas was a extremely bright boy. When he did go to school, he could speak, read and write three different languages: Spanish, Portuguese, and English. His high grades allowed him to shoot through school. With his success, he attracted the deans of many major colleges and universities. They wanted him so much that many of them offered discounts for books and fees. In several short months, he became one of the youngest students at the University of Washington. Here, he was one of those rare students; the kind with brain, brawn, and style. The guys wanted to be like him, and the girls just wanted him. In his senior year, he was the star captain of the football team. His game stratagies were almost Army-quality, and thus, he never lost a game. It was then that he and several of his close friends decided to sign up for the Marine Corps.
When he became 21, Lucas J. Berrat was now Cpt Lucas J. Berrat. His skill in football was molded into lethal sqad tactics, and was now captain of his own team of 25 Marines. They were so good, so efficiant in their tactics that they became known as the "Hunting Party". During the Gulf War, the Hunting Party was a valued force for the USMC. Under Cpt Berrat's lead, the US gained control of numerous peices of land in the war against Saddam. During his campain, Cpt Berrat was recommended for numerous promotions, but strangely enough turned them down. He "loved his sqad and what they could do". But unfortunely, he was not as immortal as some had come to believe. On Feburary 23, 1991, Cpt Berrat was ambushed while escorting a convoy of four tanker trucks across a small village along the outer portion of Iraq. 3 Marines under Cpt Berrat's command were killed, a fourth was critically wounded, and all but one tanker remaned intact. Desperate to keep his man and the last truck alive, he ordered his remaining men to escort the tanker to the other side of the village, out of harm's way. He himself stayed behind and, while protecting the wounded Marine, tried to hold them off, drawing attention to himself to allow the others to escape. Three days later, renforcements finally arrived at the village and searched for Lucas and the wounded man. When they finally found them, Lucas had been shot multiple times; one in the right leg, one in the left sholder, and two in the back. The other Marine was unbelievably still alive. With their lives hanging by a thread, they was rushed back to headquarters. During the next few months, Lucas and the Marine recovered. Thanks to his sacrifice, the last tanker truck had made it to base. Without it, fuel could not be distributed to vehicles and thus, could not help troops get to where they needed to go to end the war.
Once he had returned home, he was awarded not only the Purple Heart, but the legendary Silver Star. He had become an American hero. After several more years of service, he resigned and returned home. Word had spread quickly of his deeds overseas. The wife of the wounded Marine could never have been more grateful. Today, he is one of the most well known names in surfboarding.
