I think it's complete bullcrap that schools encourage students to stuff their essays with filler. Even as a supposedly excellent writer (teachers' words), my essays often had lower grades purely due to them "not being long enough". There is nothing wrong with writing short and straight to the point as long as you don't eliminate valuable information in the process. Got to the point where I wouldn't even turn essays in because I couldn't figure out how to bullshit enough, so to speak.
