How it is expensive is the problem though! When you have a flat rate from 12-17 units, you are of course going to probably choose somewhere more around 15-17 units to save some money, but if the classes are even more difficult, that translates more accurately into feeling like "20-23" units. You would of course, for the sake of GPA, not do something like that, probably choose 12-14, but because of that, you're extending the price by an additional flat rate by the time you reach the 3rd or 4th year because you couldn't take those classes before on the same flat rate. $12,000 X 6 + 1 with the cost of living varying from ($800-$1200 rent + utilities) $10,000-$20,000 per year, kind of a big deal. So you're hit with an extra $32,000 for not hurting your grades.
Technically speaking, UC Merced is the best all-around CA "UC" university for cost-effectiveness, from what I read a few years ago, anyways.
