Can you only use it on integers?  What about negative numbers?  Is 1! = 1 or is 1! simply not meaningful?

Ah yes!  My problem is I have terrible maths education but encounter it all the time and want to be better.  I think I first came across it in a paper on the possible evolutionary basis for true altruism vs reciprocal altruism.

0! has a solution - it comes up as 1.
You can work it out by taking the factorial of the next number then dividing by that number ie. n! = (n+1)!/(n+1)


If you take that approach, you'll eventually get to 0! which is 1!/1 = 1
...

As far as I know, you can do it with negative numbers. You'll just get alternating positive/negative solutions that get increasingly close to 0
