Dear, fellow... furry members?

I have asked myself this question MANY times. What makes you want to be a furry? Is furry some kind of, group? Because so far what i've heard is that a furry is either a homosexual man or girl. Who watches porn all day and writes on his/her blog/steam/community description/facebook/ etc. saying "I am a wolf and I want to howl in the night" (Or something similar) and saying what sex he/she is and who their into (USUALLY it says gay furries) And that you RP in text, which is completely foreign to me...  I dont get, what makes you want to be a furry. Whether it be running around in a furry suit, or rather RPing in text, or watching furry porno all day. I dont, understand why in hell. Would you want to do that... I tried talking to my friend Srgntcuddels on why he wants to be a furry or support them, but no dice. Who kindly mentioned this site.

Almost none of those things you mentioned are directly related to being a furry.

Being a furry means you're a fan of anthropomorphic animals (animals with human traits). The reason for that varies from person to person. It could be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, it could be that someone really loved a certain animal in a movie when they were young, it could be that someone thinks animals are just generally more fun than humans.

Now obviously, just with anything else in the world, some people take it to more extremes than others do. But you can't base your opinions on those kind of people either. We're just normal people who like to socialize and get together with other people who share our interest. That's all.

Ok, I'm not gay/homosexual/whatever...  I've always liked dressing up in costume.  I can never wait until Halloween.  I do have a girlfriend I've been dating for over a year.  I've known her for about 10 years. (met in college)  I love to play RPG's, and wearing a fursuit is more like a LARP (live action role playing) for me than anything. As soon as my girlfriend sees my finished fursuit, I'm going to have to make her one also.

I'm going to have to agree with almost every comment here.  What you have heard so far is mostly going to be false.  The people who wish to say that they are part of the fandom, are not all homosexual out of necessity.  Take me for example:  I'm straight as a flagpole in Alabama, but I consider myself a furry.  To answer your initial question though, what makes me WANT to me a furry?  Well, it's an area of personal interest for me in a  professional sense.  I'm not delusional.  I don't think I'm anything other than human.  I think that it would be sort of neat if Anthros existed, but... Well I guess that's it.

It is my opinion, that a very select few people do as you mentioned, but that's not specifically what makes one a furry.  So really, you don't need to understand why certain people would want to do that.  Just know that there is more to everything that what the surface reveals.

Its called the furry fandom. Its not an organization, just people who are interested in anthro animals.
Just like non-furs, not all furs watch porn, and not all of them are gay.
That's not what furrys are about. Its about RPing, writing stories, and drawing your fursona (Anthro Character) and just having a good time with people who share your interests. Fursuiting is just like cosplaying for anime fans, its about their favorite character, and its all for the fun of it.

Now, I'm not gonna sit here and lie to you saying that not ALL furs are clean and not watch porn, or do things to that extent, but so do non furs, and they don't gent nearly as much lip for doing it. If all stereotypes were true, then every middle aged white guy is a child molester, and I'd be as far away from them as possible.

The people who really want to be/are their animals are called otherkin.

We're just normal, some of us RP and quite a few of us are in some way homosexual/bisexual but that doesn't mean you can generalize and say that all furs are erotic homosexuals who like to RP. That's just what a bunch of hateful idiots say, and they have no reason behind saying those other than their malicious want to put someone down and feel superior to. This crap isn't true and those people who act like that aren't furries. 
We are just people who think anthropomorphic stuff is awesome and we are generally an accepting and friendly community.
And as said those people who take it further are Therian/Otherkin and even they are misunderstood and generalized by a few extremists.

I'm not ashamed of every single fur that watches porn, but its gone WAY too far when they put all their buisness out there and put up pics of them doing... Things with each other. Its private buisness what they do, so they should keep it behind closed doors, and  if other furs wanna see it, then they should keep it to e-mail and private IM.

Just because furverts are oversexed dosn't mean that they're not furries. Just means that they're oversexed is all.

in relevance to what Zephyr said, i became a furry, not because i wanted to be an animal, but because i love that animal, white tigers are my ultimate favourite animal, and if my personality were to be converted into an animal/physical form it'd be said animal. That's what i assume others do as well, not all, i mean i know some who'd preffer to be that animal, but what does it matter really. Furry is a furry regardless of why or how, some might even be a furry because they like the art or want to have an animal avitar on the web. And with the sexual things, i honestly have to say that's natural, 'normal' humans (Non-furs) have the same sort of aspect really.. same sort of things, they have pornographic images of normal people nude, the only thing really different to that is that well,  furries have anthro characters drawn into it; that's the only real difference i see anyway. Being a furry is definitely not just the sexual aspect of it.... it's many things and it's definitely not all people wanting o be an animal, like me. I am one because i feel my personality suits the animal, and it gives me an excuse to purr
