Annie's breath caught in her throat. Her gaze fell on the opposite wall as she relived, as she did every night, the last moments that she had shared with Kitt Szarda...
"Ship crash landed on strip 12, not two clicks from here... We're the closest team to the site. We get in, and get them out..." Kitt glanced around at the faces of the team. All wore dark red fatigues and no body armour or helmets, testimony to the unexpected nature of the alarm call. The ship juddered again as it roared through the sky. Annie stood opposite her husband, and grinned as she glanced over his muscled frame. His hair was greying at the edges, prematurely like his father's, but his eyes still shone with vibrant youth. He caught her gaze and smiled in return. Overhead, a light turned from red to green, and the ship shook for a final time as it landed...
Colony 254423A, locally known as Jermain. Arid, but habitable, vast concrete landing strips covered the planetary surface. As the ramp of the Mechanicus Dropship lowered, several immense Mechanicus Carriers in the far distance came into view. Giant steel constructs that stretched for miles, they sat now silent and still on their landing strips, hundreds of smaller ships swarming around them.
Close by however, a ship of much smaller design lay near the Dropship. It stood, engines pointing to the sky, nose burried deep into a charred furrow of concrete and earth, thick black smoke billowing.
The team set off at a run, boots clanking down the dropship ramp and crunching on the concrete landing strip below. Five minutes went by in a blur of hydrants and dousing sprays of fire-retardant foam. The ship still blazed from within, and so Kitt was the first to enter, air purifier pulled over his mouth. The door of the ship opened with a clang and a figure slumped out of the smoke and darkness inside. Kitt caught the fox as he fell, already checking him over for burns and carrying him bodily towards the waiting stretcher.
Back in the dropship the pilot had received a second message, just as the lone crewmember of the crashed ship was rescued from certain death. A message that, had it reached the team in time, would have saved Kitt's life... "Do not approach crashed ship, pilot assumed to be dangerous and unstable. Await arrival of police forces and make no attempt to approach the ship... I repeat, make no attempt to approach crashed ship..."
Annie clenched her fist tightly and glanced up at Krade. How long she had been staring at the blank wall she did not know, and so instead she cleared her throat hoarsely "He's dead. Shot three times in the chest from point blank range..."

Blaze grinned and glanced from Reggie over to Tess. She sighed and stabbed at her own breakfast, all appetite gone "Your making a big thing out of it." Blaze put down his fork and turned in his seat to her "No, your the one who is acting like this is alright. Why does it matter to you what the other engineers think?" Tess bowed her head over her plate and mumbled weakly "Well it does matter to me... I wish it didn't, but it does."
