MARY Valley Rattler volunteers are delighted they will soon be welcomed back into the old Gympie railway yards, where they once kept Gympie's favourite train ride rolling along.
Volunteer advocate Ken Coulter has told of his new optimism as a result of advice from the Rattler Railway Company after a workshop with government funding advisers.
Tourism portfolio councillor and Mary Valley representative Julie Walker on Friday said there was a new optimism, especially among volunteers who were "champing at the bit".
Rattler Railway Company acting chairman Ian McNicol stressed the company was not pre-empting a government funding decision.
"We're putting out best foot forward," board member Garry Davison said.
"We want to get some jobs done that need to be done."
That included timber renovation, painting, weeding and general maintenance work.
Mr McNicol reported recently (and with apparent enthusiasm) on a September meeting facilitated by the State Government.
It had been attended by departmental representatives, local and regional tourism organisations, Gympie Regional Council, Rattler board members and MP Tony Perrett.
"The workshop provided a review of the RRC business plan recommendations and identified further requirements needed to develop business case options for the reintroduction of the Valley Rattler operation on a sustainable basis," he said.
And that means new hope, despite the cautious wording.
"While not pre-empting the State Government decision on funding, the RRC, with support from the council, plans to commence activities at the Gympie Station and workshop precinct early in the new year," he said.
And that was enough to put smiles on a lot of faces.
"I haven't been privy to the conversations, but the feeling is more positive than it has been for a while," Cr Walker said.
