Why Do we do this?
« on: January 24, 2011, 10:35:11 PM »
I'm a creative writing major and I'm writing my thesis in nonfiction and i was hoping to write it on the nature of being a furry! (i need this 80 page thesis to graduate  XD)

Without bogging any of you down with writing buzz words my work is a multifaceted work containing many stories which create a social commentary about the nature of furies. Now obviously only my story wont just do it i need help so i was hoping that some of you will help me by allowing me to write about your stories as part if my thesis. I'm mostly looking for things like why you became a furry, what are your feelings about the community, and you're relationship with your Fursona.

Thanks to all of you. Keep on Rocking.

Personally I use it alot as a form of expression. I can put feelings in my fursona that I can't do as well as other ways. The way I made my fursona is that I used certain aspects of myself, but not exactly like me. There are differences. For instance I'm a physics major, but my fursona doesn't focus on that kind of thing. He enjoy art and music more then I do.

Another reason I like this place is its very accepting. People on the forum won't judge anyone usually.

Why do I like things like getting pet and such? well...it make me feel like my fursona, and I feel thing that I'm expressing I guess. Thats what I think anyway
Love is only a feeling.
A feeling of security, a feeling of happiness, a feeling of lust, a feeling of belonging.
A feeling we need.
We may think we can live life without it, but a life without it would be boring, meaningless, and depressing.
Love controls us. Without love, we are nothing. With it, nothing else in the world matters
Love is only a feeling.
A feeling that makes life worth living or dying

it presents the perfect escape from my mundane life. In my normal life, I'm tied in by social constraints and I can never accomplish anything. My fursona is a vehicle for me to escape and be the person I want to be, so that I can leave my normal life behind.

We do it because we like it... we enjoy these fantasies (for some of us not so much fantasies as possibilities!) and stories and characters, because we're human.  It's undoubtedly obvious that some people would not want to be human, and so this escapsim is something we enjoy, albeit for some, it isn't escapism. (I'm guilty of this, as most fursuiters surely are.  Albeit, mine will be through genetics and some interesting procedures.)

it's a way to escape the real world i guess. my scalie self and i are two almost completely different personalities. and i use him to expres the real me rather than the normal me who blends into the situation to be invisible. as for the comunity, we tend to be more accepting of others who are different because we ourselves are all different.

sorry if this doesn't help much and i hope your thesis turns out great.

Well, most furries will tell you it runs deeper than just doing animal like things. Personally, I've always been an animal person. I've always been that way, even as a kid, I used to pretend I was an animal almost all the time. I "became" furry I guess because it gives more artistic freedom. I prefer anthros over humans because if I wanted to be a human.. Well, here I am. I'm human every day. Why do I want to do that in an RP or something like that we're you're supposed be enjoying the freedoms of it? My feelings about the community? Well, I'm sure not everyone is going to agree with me, but yeah, the furry community is weird. Nice, but very strange and a majority (not all) of them are in it because they can freely express their fetishes. Generally, the community is also more accepting, but can also be the most defensive, and I think that's why the catch the most flack. My fursona is special to me just like everyone else's. She's me, and yet on another hand she isn't. She's me when I am at my worst, and what I don't want to be. She's that part of me I don't always like to share with everyone.

Well I dont know how relevant it is, but I view my fursona as a form of relating with people on a more, should I say, intimate level and my fursona is a great way of doing so. I see it as almost a... Volunteer schzisophrenia. In a way, my old self is the creation, whilst my 'fursona' is how the world sees me now. I base relationships off of it and I think that makes them something... Special. I really relate to the fandom, the romantiscism of the mind, as it were. Anyway, thats just my two cents. If you find me not completely mundane, I could write pages of my views when I'm on an actual computer. My email is on my profile.

I'm pretty sure my story is waaay to complex to write down here, and certainly too personal to post anywhere vaguely public. I'll be more than happy if you want to email/IM/PM me about it, tho.  =D

Well, I'll answer your question in each part.

1: Why I became a furry.

You could trace it back to the old disney cartoons I watched as a kid. Micky, Donald, Goofy, all those guys. I really liked watching them. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were a factor as well. I remember dressing in turtle costumes and playing around with friends cause I liked them so much. Its a way to escape into a world where everythings ok and not falling apart.

2: Feelings about the community. I assume you mean furry community

Not much on this one. I don't really care what other people think/say/do. Whatever floats your boat, know what I mean?

3: Relationship to my Fursona

Macid is a 1/3rd of my psyche.  He likes to have fun, laid back, and cool guy. Special markings and colors are to differentiate him from anyone else's fursona. The Lynx is just my favorite animal, so thats what I made him. the other 2 thirds I dont like to talk about.

Hope I helped.

I'm not 100% furry, but I would proudly say i'm part. I was introduced into the community by one of my best friends who's a fur, after I found out about him being one. I joined this forum and did a bit more 'fur friendly' research on the furry fandom, I also looked at all the negative press they got (as well as some of my friends who thought furs were just plain wierdos). I love this community very much, and I'm glad I looked into it myself, as the majority of furs are friendly and fun to talk to, as well as interesting and very accepting of everyone. Its one of those rare places where you can be yourself, as well as explore your imagination with your avatar and RPs...

Hope that was something worth writing on, if you have more questions, you can pm me :3
