I normally don't hunt apex predators. But with the idiotic conservation system we have down here the deer population exploded causing the black bear population to also explode. So we started seeing more and more black bears wandering into neighborhoods and what not. So we had to thin the population.
Bear meat is very difficult to cook and have it taste good. It is very oily and gamey. But if done right it is very tasty.
Hunting them is also a challenge. Hunting bear is a lot like hunting men. They are very very smart. They will double back over their own tracks and start hunting you. After they are hit they will leave false blood trails, then double back and start a new course. Etc.
The best hunt of my life was in Alaska. I stalked a brown bear for six days before finally catching sight of him. I always try to be an ethical hunter. I don't take shots when I think there is a chance that I will miss my intended impact zone, causing more suffering than is needed. And I did the same with this big boy. I came out of a thicket forty yards away from him. He turned, scented, and saw me. Stood up on his hind legs and postured. I drew my bow and nailed him in the chest.
I tracked him for five hours. Finally found him.
A lot of people don't understand how I can be a fur, and still hunt. I am a predator. I love nature. To truly understand nature you have to become a part of it. Part of nature is death. Every single part of nature thrives on the death of its competition.
