Your computer
« on: May 10, 2011, 08:20:51 AM »
It makes me a little sad that this board has cobwebs all over it, so I thought I'd make a thread. This is somewhat similar to one Timmy had started, but this isn't limiting to just computer specs. Tell us anything you want about your computer! It may have a history, have gone through a lot in the time you've used it, be a total beast of a computer that you want to brag about or maybe a terrible computer (like my desky!) and wanna say just how much you hate it.

I'll start. You don't have to write as much as me, you can even write more.

I have two computers, a desktop that's been around for at least 5 years and a MacBook I got August last year from school. My desktop used to belong to my grandpa. I currently run Windows 7 and XP on it (dual booted) and it has been formatted probably about 489674 times. Some basic specs: It has ~1gb of ram (I ran 64 bit Windows 7 on it too last year, pshfft) with an Intel Pentium processor with 2x 2.8GHz cores. I have an nVidia GeForce 7100 GS and that's about it. I also named it 'Desky' x3 - it is also in need of upgradez. And has also ran Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04. Before this computer I had one which you had to hit the top for it to turn on; the power button didn't work - you literally had to give it a good hit and it would start up xD

My MacBook has been through a LOT compared to everybody else's at school. It's also ran Ubuntu 10.10, runs OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7 dual booted with Windows 7. Dual booting and using is against school rules, but the joke's on IT support if they haven't figured out everything I've actually done on that thing that breaks their rules yet (they tend to threaten/bluff a heap). I've also hit the keyboard a few times in rage which has caused hard drive shock (I assume), locking the computer up but thankfully was easily fixed by a restart. One of those rage times was caused by The Sims 3 >.>.. It has ~2gb of ram with a dual core processor with both cores being 2.2GHz. It has an nVidia 9100? I think. I'm not sure, but it's 100x better than my desktop's. I'm currently waiting on a DVI -> VGA cable for it so I can plug it into my monitor, then plug in my mouse+keyboard and use it like a desktop.

And I guess I expected to write less but yeah- go for it. Tell everyone about your computer, or computers if you have more than one.

I find visuals to help tell my story better!

Here are some pics to precede the tale of my laptop.

It's currently doing a virus scan so the CPU usage is high =\

So there's some stats. My laptop comes features with a Touchpad mouse pad, a full sized keyboard with numberpad, web cam and microphone, DVD Drivey thingy, can burn CD's and DVD's, and I gots a light up external mouse for it!  B)

I got this thing a year ago and have had absolutely no problems with it, if you don't count the one time the battery wouldn't charge. That was fixed by taking it out and blowing on stuff a bit, then putting it back in. Never got a virus before surprisingly. Not that I know of anyways  x_x

Some of the finer times this thing had was when me and dad would take it out to the lake and watch movies at night  :D It would smell like campfire for days afterwards! And the screen got all bug juicey  XP

I play some older games on it like Starcraft, Quake 3 Arena, OpenTransport Tycoon Deluxe, LegoRockRaiders, and such and such.

I've booted it up in Ubuntu from a Live CD a few times, but I'm afraid to actually install it .

So..... I guess that's it? Oh.... the warranty expires this month...

I love the colour of your windows, Lizard :o

I took some screenshots and a photo too.

Desktop without a wallpaper cause I'm too lazy to find one: http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/jaspertf/desky.png
My whole desk, with a new computer chair that isn't in the picture: http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/jaspertf/DSCF1464.jpg
Laptop, a bit squishy with all the windows because of the screen res: http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/yy154/jaspertf/lappy.png

I'm a little ashamed of my desky..
I also have to take my laptop to IT support at my school to get the vinyl on the bottom replaced, it's coming off.

Well...
My first own computer was a desktop I got 6 or 7 years ago. It had only 512mb of DDR1 RAM, a 3GHz CPU with only 1 core and a 256mb GPU...
About 4 years ago I switched it for something more modern with a 2.2GHz Triple core AMD Phenom CPU and 4GB of DDR2 RAM which I loved quite much. The same year I got my laptop (mentioned at the bottom of the post)
Then last year I felt it was time for an upgrade, so I saved up my money and made a list of the components I needed and when I had enough money, I bought the components and built myself my first own homemade rig (Desktop #1). However, I got it to have at my mothers place, and since I do switch between mom and dad every other week since their divorced, I felt I needed something better than my rather shitty performing laptop as main PC at dads place. So for my birthday last year, dad paid the components for a desktop at his place (Desktop #2).
And that is about where I am now. I am happy with what I have currently and I hope it'll last several years before it needs any major upgrade!

Awesome! I like your server setup.

Main server its a custom built rig with an amd phenom quad core @ 2,6Ghz and 12gb memory.
It has one 80gb scsi 14krpm disk for the OS, and 13TB of sata disks for storage.

Second server is an old hp3 that i dont really use anymore. At the top a Zyxel zywall 1050 security gateway and fibre optic switch.
Also have an old xserve 1U server that i use for backing up important data from the main server (sql database, photographs etc).

yea, i do, too.

Extreme multi-tasking is what I do alot of, which is why I usually end up using it all. Plus, having 1.2 TB of games kinda needs room. On my busiest days, I have 3 messengers running, Skype, Livestream, Photoshop, Steam, C++, CS: Source and running 3 CS:S servers off my comp.
