The public view of collars, I have found, is not to scream "AAAHH FURRIES, LOCK AWAY YOUR DOGS AND CATS!", you get a couple odd glances, but from our conversations, I am sure you are not too unused to them, especially around pencils.
Hiding collars is easier than I have implied, they may be ridiculously hard to hide round your neck, but you can wear it round your arm or something to gain confidence. Try above the elbow, worked for me.
As for the addiction, probably a strong word. It is nothing like a drug or smoking or something like that. I find mine to be more of a safety blanket type thing; it makes me feel better in myself when I have it on, but I am not too averse to not having it. I don't like being without it, but I could bin it and feel as if I was wearing it when I have adjusted back in a few days; at least in an emotional sense, not tactile. When I do forget to put it back on after a shower, I feel a bit unusual, not quite as happy, but as I say, I could go without it, just would rather not.
As for uni, might be a good idea, but people won't mind too much anyway, or so I experienced. I was lucky by the sound of it, but I'm sure most people wouldn't give a flying fig to be honest. As I said to you, they don't need to know about furryism if you think they will react adversely. There are other explanations, E.G. the one people make up about me, which annoys me slightly, but I CBA to dispute: Goth. There are many more, just try and find one you don't mind as a backup if you feel unready to come out all the way about it.
TL;DR, There are ways around it. All of it. Just find the way that is right for you.
