The lines kind of show where everything goes.  See how the head is basically just a circle, the muzzle takes up the bottom half, and the bottom of the eyes start right at that center line?

I used to draw eyes way up on the head, and it always ended up looking squashed.  In your case, the proportions are actually cool, it just looks more like he's looking down.  Not bad on muzzle shape, nice details with the teeth and tongue!

Actually, as I look at it, I see you *were* using a circle.  And then another circle below for the muzzle - again, a downward-ish shot.  Still, pretty darn good!

To try to help, I did a redline for you.



The biggest issues are marked in yellow.

The line where the upper lips fall over the lower jaw is placed way too high. Most animals you can only see a tiny bit of their lower jaw; the upper jaw and lips appear much larger and cover most of the lower jaw inside the lips. The nose also needed to be larger.

The back of the head was too low, eliminating the gentle slope around the back of the head that bears usually have to give them a stocky, thick neck.

The rest was really pretty good overall, just minor adjustments. You had the overall round shape of the head that bears have. Although the ears could have been a tiny bit more round, they aren't too overly pointy either. The eye placement on the head is close enough to look okay too.

thanks for the redlines! (and the hand puppet ) I had tons of trouble with the nose because it kept looking funky. I think my main problem with my arts at this point is mostly anatomy as you've pointed out. Drake needs moar anatomy study

Moar real life photo reference. Always try to note the distances and proportions in a photo, and the spatial relationship between each feature or "piece" of the face/body/[whatever you're drawing].

yeah, I was studying bear photos while drawing and my brother walked in and stared at me I still find it quite hard to bring real life features into my art, but I'm trying.

I decided to do a little gift art for a friend (Aoren Deringer for those of you who know him) because I like his fursona (the African Painted Dog) i was actually really pleased at how this came out (except for I had a little trouble with the perspective between the head and the muzzle)
