Opposite Brained Artists
« on: September 22, 2011, 02:33:45 PM »
You hear all the time that artists are all dominated by their right brain--- it's where they get their creativity, their imagination, and why they tend not to excel at logical matters and schoolwork.

But what happens when an artist is a left brain person? Similarly, what happens when a right brained person is neither creative nor an artist?

This has a lot to do with how you approach your art.

I for one am a left brained artist. I like to think and act logically. I like to plan, use concise words, and get things done. I am a high achiever at school. When I draw, I rarely use any of the methods the majority of artists use. Instead, I know exactly what a face should be shaped like and how to replicate it, how many lines go into an eye, how far the arms should fall, etc....It's like I've spent time memorizing how to draw.

I am creative enough to come up with many characters and stories but rarely do these get anywhere because my logic always finds something wrong with my ideas.

How does your way of thinking affect how you draw?

Are you more left (logical) or right (creative) brained? In fact, I was curious if there was a presence of persons who were both left and right brained.

I think that's me as well Katie. I'm a very left brain type of person. Like with you, I can imagine up something awesome, like a cool character, or action scene, or even a cool story, but when I go to put the pen to paper, I end up stopping after everything I do and thinking that it doesn't look right, or the story needs to have more scientific backing.

Great example: Right now I'm in the middle/beginning of writing a scifi adventure story, however, I keep getting hung up on things like, how would the spacecraft travel between star systems, and I end up spending all my time inventing theoretical space travel, then I don't want to write it down in case it actually works that way. Or when I try drawing, I hate using the circles and stuff because I don't like seeing that incomplete progress that still doesn't look like what I want it to till I'm done. UGH!

Now if I could only ever get it going. But that's a discussion for a different thread. On topic, any advice for us left brainers Katie?
