I started with AD&D (thanks to my dad), then got big into 3.5. Never bothered with 4

IMHO 4e is OK, but it's just not D&D.  It's a different fantasy RPG and that's fine.  THe fact that 5th ed playtesting began while support materials were still being released for 4e is damning.

BUt there is a character builder program which is amazing.

I started with Basic but 2nd is my thing (incorporating 1st ed AD&D materials)

Yeah, they made it look like 4e was D&D for kids. I haven't heard about 5e, that's just absurd. It was years between 3.5 and 4!

I have issues with the D20 system.  IF you can't use lots of silly dice why even bother?

I like D20, it's so versatile. The basis of everything is on one die and you can apply that to any game setting.
