If memory serves me right, unicorns in the Medieval era were considered terrifying and powerful, so kings would pay people to create false unicorn skulls to display, and make other kings see their strength.
Also the idea of the unicorn came from a mythical one-horned goat that was believed to steal the souls of women and children.
