i get only 1 hour online
« on: July 06, 2012, 09:46:36 AM »
at my home im usually only allowed 1 hour on the computer

it usually takes me 2-3 hours to check fourm posts, messages and youtube subscriptions

hours added onto that are my time on the irc , doing productive things and playing games...its usually the time when im on irc that my parents realise

so...with that in mind...is 1 hour online fair?

What we think is fair or not doesn't affect anything at all. If you think it's unfair, talk to your parents about it in a respectful way and prove that you are responsible enough to have a little more freedom. They might change their mind if you approach it in the right way.

Try anyway man. If you argue with them you will *show* them how you have changed since you were 5. You will make them think twice.
It shows progress-maturity.

Zeph pretty much told you exactly what you should do.

I've been in a similar situation before, Maggintons. Just give it some time. When I would be on for a while sometimes my parents would threaten to disconnect the internet as well, but just let things blow over before you broach the subject. If anything you can probably go to a library or to your school computer lab and use the internet there. If not, just use the extra time you have to try something else and follow what your parents tell you to do. If you stay consistent that should help win them over.

Arm yourself with logic and you'll never have a weakness.

If they can't refute your argument, either they have to be irrational, which you can call them out on, or they have to concede. Its always been and always will be this way with people. The problem for you is creating a rational argument for your hour to begin with, but never fear, there are charts demonstrating the benefits of gaming, just try googling "videogame health infographic."

I survived on strictly one hour for a couple years. It's there to encourage interaction with people irl and to go outside, which I believe we need now a days. So it's more than fair. Granted, it could be adjusted to let you be on more later in the day when it's not likely that you'd be spending time with people

Fairness is subjective.
Furthermore, IRL interaction isn't necessarily better than online interaction. Think of the autistic people out there who just can't interact IRL, and find better comfort in the online medium.

Now you've generalized the matter. This is specific for maggingtons, whom I assume isn't autistic. And if he is socially awkward, that is all more reason to get irl interaction, seeing as the only cripple is lack of experience or social confidence

the problem is ive finished school and they still take control..and it makes me think...is this my future? always been limited to that amount of time when most people do there most creative stuff at this time?

The situation can be generalized because any arguments for maggintons are applicable to anyone like maggintons, and vice versa.
Also, i was arguing with your point that IRL interaction is best.
Take me for instance. Despite being Aspie, i make friends fairly easily. The thing is though, that i never have time or resources to interact IRL, meaning that online interaction is superior in depth, length, and also allows more creative options, beyond what can be offered physically currently.

There are many more situations that make online interaction superior to physical interaction, and while it also has drawbacks, the online world cant simply become inaccessible so easily as any time for physical interaction.

Your argument was that it isn't fair to those who may be autistic. I also never said it was best; I said it is needed. My belief is that if your parents are limiting your time on a computer, then you probably should socialize with others in real life more often. You're pushing words into my mouth and I'm unsure why.
