It is very true that the only time I use my buck knife is to open packages, or cut cords. Other than that it just sits in its usual spot all day.

In fact, the majority of stabbings that occur with knives are done with kitchen knives, honestly.
Yep, and people think non-cutlery is bad

There you go! :) All the reason to get a better one that you can carry around with you.

Yeah, I really do need a new knife for defense when I leave the house.

Ah, in that case, I recommend looking at a small fixed-blade knife. Make sure you know the knife laws for your area, though. It's important to stay within the confines of the law when it comes to stuff like this. Try googling "(your area) penal code weapons." I was able to pretty quickly pull up a PDF of the chapter of my state's penal code that deals with weapons. It details the definition of an illegal knife.

After you've determined what's legal to carry in your area, try checking out the fixed blade section on knifecenter.com: http://www2.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/index/hunt.html

Not even stilettos are legal here  :o

The only legal weapon you can carry on yourself is a hunting knife.

Any length restrictions, or areas where they're not allowed?

The article said nothing about length, it just cannot be a non-folding knife or any other knife that isn't a hunting knife.

Hmmm, so no fixed-blade knives at all?

Here's the penal code on knives for Michigan.

Hmm, well, from what I can understand, it looks like folding knives should be ok. As for fixed blades, it's really ambiguous...

I wouldn't want to take any risks being caught with a fixed blade on myself.

I better go with a folding knife to keep within the rules.

Smart idea, yeah. Would it still be a defensive carry, then?

For defense purposes only.

It would be rather ignorant to take a folding knife to bring intentional harm to others when not defending yourself.

Of course. I meant as opposed to a utility knife.

In either case, I'd caution you against getting a knife similar to that hunting knife you showed me before—the one with the gut hook. This is because, a knife like that is designed exclusively for skinning animals while hunting. Yes, it can obviously be used for cutting other things, but if you're using a knife defensively against an attacker, you'll very likely want to use thrusting motions. If you were to use a knife with a gut hook, chances are it would get stuck if you were to thrust. You definitely don't want that. Instead, opt for a blade structure that can slip in and out easily. Perhaps a tanto-point.

And of course, ideally you'd want a fixed blade for self defense, simply because its construction is better suited for combat. But folding knives are better than nothing. Check out this list and see if there's anything that catches your eye. Most of these categories are for fixed blades, but there are some folders in there as well. A word of caution, though; I recommend you stay away from any Gerber knives. That manufacturer has had way too many recalls for me to trust any of their products anymore. They're known to break often.

http://www2.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/index/specops.html

Of course, I do not condone using any knife on another living thing, except as a last resort. And if you absolutely must use it, attack to wound, not to kill.
