The only legal weapon you can carry on yourself is a hunting knife.

You can't get a conceal/carry permit for firearms in Michigan? If its for defense Id consider just carrying a gun. Unless you're properly trained, its very easy to get stabbed with your own blade. Once you lose wrist control over your knife, its over.

I'm going to make my own knife(or knives) and I had hoped that anyone of you can help me, like in what steels are good and how to heat treat them without any real equipment. And how to easily cut the shape out.
Im going to make a small-medium fixed blade so a stainless steel is probaly best suited, but then what SS? There is many and I need one thats easy to work with but still a good steel, and the heat treat can't be too advanced.

As for making your own knives, what I do is just go to Home Depot and buy some bar stock.
Next you will need a angle grinder or hack saw for the basic shape.
Once you have that find your self an anvil (I beam or piece of railroad track)
Build a hot fire, use coal or hardwood and find your self an old furnace blower to really get the fire hot. You will need some insulated work gloves (must be leather) or welding gloves and dampen them.
Now with vice grips place the basic knife cut out in the fire. Once the blade of the knife is red hod remove from the fire. Pound the knife with a hammer and once the desired shape is accomplished drop the knife in a pail of water.
Proceed to sharpen knife and your done!

As for knives I have, I have 2 homemade ones one forged and one is just a sharpened pice of flat stock. I also have a goofy $25 gerber paraframed knife.
As much as it is a cheep knife I find that it stays sharp, is fairly well balanced and is a good utilitarian knife.

Thanks for that info, but im sorry to say that I were not thinking about forging-ish knifemaking. Lots of new steeltypes are not meant for forging, and is better suited for cutting out and then heat treating it, not forging. But it is real nice info there and it seems like you know some stuff about that, so are there any steel types that you recomend me?
